BRANDON - Jousting and barbecue as part of a Jewish holiday?
That's what you'll see Sunday as Chabad Brandon celebrates Sukkot, a holiday commemorating the 40 years in which Jews wandered the desert after fleeing Egypt.
The holiday - considered one of the most joyful in Judaism - is celebrated for one week starting on the fifth day after Yom Kippur. During the week, which started on Monday, families celebrate by eating their meals in a makeshift hut called a sukkah, reminiscent of those used by their wandering ancestors.
Traditionally, sukkah were made of sticks and other found materials.
Modern Jewish families can order kits online to build their own sukkah. Chabad Brandon has taken that one step further by building an air conditioned sukkah that will be the centerpiece for their celebration. The festivities are at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at 3207 Grove Way in Valrico.
Featured activities include jousting, a bungee run (contestants attached to bungee cords race to see who gets the farthest), barbecue dinner and a booth where you can create your own edible sukkah.
Admission is $10 and proceeds go to the Jewish community in Sderot, Israel, which is near the Gaza Strip and has been repeatedly attacked.
