Truly dazzling

Our epic, soon-to-award-winning "Valley Girl" podcast is now online. Thirty-five minutes of pure genius. Well, 30 minutes of genius and 5 minutes of great music clips.

Which of course, begs the question. Five best songs from the Valley Girl soundtrack (once rated the second-hardest soundtrack to find in a store):
5) Everywhere at Once (Plimsouls)
4) I La La La Love You (Pat Travers)
3) I Melt with You (Modern English)
2) Monster of Love (Sparks)
1) Million Miles Away (Plimsouls)

Which begs the question, 8 best soundtracks from 80s movies:
8) Top Gun
7) The Lost Boys
6) The Blues Brothers
5) Fast Times at Ridgemont High
4) Footloose
3) Purple Rain
2) Pretty in Pink
1) Valley Girl

(Yeah, I tried for 10 but couldn't decide on two more. Feel free to add to the list).

Comments

I'd have to add Xanadu to the list, assuming it was an 80s movie. And maybe Labyrith too.

I guess Grease was late 70s, right? Otherwise, hooky as it was, it'd make a top 10 list. What about 16 Candles? Did that have any good songs?

Guys, while this isn't about the soundtrack .. I have to comment about the "top 10 movies" of the '80s ... left off?Red Dawn (1984)Think about it. Not only did it star Charlie Sheen, Lea Thompson (Lorraine McFly), and Patrick Swayze, but also it is wonderfully representative of the last decade to fear the Soviets .. Reagan was in full power (Iron Eagle: "why do you think they call him 'Ronnie Ray-Gun?'"), we were the last kids to imagine a war with Russia, and an invasion of the US still seemed likely enough to have a movie about it .. plus .. WOLVERINES!

"What is a wolverine?""A small, fireous animal. Also, the mascot of the local sports team."I love that movie. Definitely my favorite teenage partisan film.

I have to think "Melt with You" deserves the top spot on the VG soundtrack. Overplayed as it is.

Since you were discussing the Valley Girl soundtrack here, I wanted to re-post this from the Valley Girl thread. Hopefully not overkill. :)I wanted to chime in about the Soundtrack. If you notice in the original credits of the film, it lists some songs which were not in the movie, including a Clash and a Culture Club tune. The film itself was on a very tight budget. And just as production was done, the Culture Club song "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" blew up to a big hit. The agent, or label (not sure which) wanted to renegotiate its rights. When the people behind Valley Girl balked, that label (or agent, or whomever) yanked its rights at the last moment, along with the other affiliated acts (Clash, with Rock the Casbah, may have been one more).Since the filming was done, it was too late to change the credits. There was a soundtrack album being produced, on Epic records, but it was halted and all copies destroyed because it contained some of the songs that could not be used.In its place a small company called Roadshow threw together an album. It had 6 songs ("mini-album"), with an identical A and B side. Had a pink cover. This is the "official" soundtrack.A few years later a British company put out a soundtrack with a different listing and a blue cover. Questionable legality.About 5 years ago or so, the rights to the Roadshow album were sold, and a flood of these hit ebay. They were pretty much all of recent origin. Now, the interesting rumor, and the great unknown, is that some of the Epic albums actually made it out of the factory. Never sold but that some survived and were kept by employees. For years this was thought to perhaps be purely myth (by me anyway), but lo and behold, about 2 years ago one showed up on ebay. The REAL soundtrack, on an Epic label. No dust cover. I thankfully lost out on the bidding when it sailed over $500.Well, thats my long-winded tale. If anyone knows any other tidbits, or has actually seen or *gasp* owned the Epic disc, I'd love to hear about it.

Wow, that's great to read all about the soundtrack. I had read that some copies made it into circulation before being pulled but I was never sure how many were floating around. I guess it was the Roadshow version that I had heard about. It makes you wonder how many bootleg copies might have been pressed over the years.I think that this is the recent "questionable" release:http://www.audiophileusa.com/item.cfm?ID=32230I also found THIS page:http://www.popsike.com/php/detaildata.php?itemnr=4043810851showing a very interesting version that might possibly be the "internal" version. If these links don't wrap correctly, I'll do a TinyURL version. Can you share any links where your info came from?

Let's try that again. Here are the links I was trying to post re: the Valley Girl soundtrack versions:http://tinyurl.com/8gsufhttp://tinyurl.com/br9nr

Thanks for the links. The blue cover is in fact the British release. These are seen from time to time. The other link is the original Epic, to the best of my knowledge. I believe it is the same one I saw on ebay a while back.Don't really have any links per se for the info. I learned most of that pre-internet days, from various sources. I did ask Deborah Foreman about it, but she didn't really have any additional information. The cast members were all given the pink soundtrack which they all signed for each other, which she still has. Was thinking of listing it on ebay but never did.

I'm not sure when you spoke with Deborah, but do you have any idea as to why she didn't participate in the supplemental materials on the DVD? That seemed REALLY odd to me given that she seemed ready to be part of it when speaking about it on her website.

No, I don't know why she wouldn't participate. About 6 months or so beforehand she just basically shut down her public contacts, her website, etc. She said something along the lines of "I never look back", which may have something to do with it.In any event, I haven't chatted with her in quite some time.

Add "Repo Man" to the list! May be too "underground" for most, with songs from Iggy Pop and the Circle Jerks among others. The 'Jerks had a great scene in the movie where they played "When the s*** hits the fan" in a cocktail lounge...also NO WAY can you put "I Melt With You" (overplayed as it is) at #1 above "A Million Miles away". The Plimsouls created a power-pop masterpiece with that one, Peter Case's subsequent folkie stuff isn't bad either...

Yay! Repo Man! I think it deserves an entire podcast!

Remember the movie where...1) Otto the punk (Emilio Estevez in his greatest role), comes home to his zombie pot-smoking parents, asks for some food, and is directed to grab a generic can labeled "Food" out of the pantry.. 2) Harry Dean Stanton being perfectly paranoid as the head repo man, ("Don't want no queers,.. or Christians either") 3) when Otto's punk friends get caught "Committing some crimes", they state "Society made us what we are" at which time Otto replies "Bulls***!, You're white suburban punks!"

Like "Valley Girl" and "The Breakfast Club," "Repo Man" is another 80s movie that mentions sushi! One punk says to another: "Yeah. Let's go get sushi and not pay..."
