Get your skag and let's go: Great anti-Valentine quotes from the 80s

Valentineangel787226 Picking the best romantic movies of the 80s is a task beneath us here at Stuck in the 80s. And we've already covered Best Kisses of the 80s. So here's our Valentine's Day tribute with a darker twist. Instead of the obvious list, I give you ...

Most unromatic lines from the most romantic films of the 80s:

Moonstruck (1987): "I just want you to know no matter what you do, you're gonna die, just like everybody else."

When Harry Met Sally (1989): "All I'm saying is that somewhere out there is the man you are supposed to marry. And if you don't get him first, somebody else will, and you'll have to spend the rest of your life knowing that somebody else is married to your husband." (podcast)

Dirty Dancing (1987): "I didn't spend all summer long toasting bagels just to bail out some little chick who probably balled every guy in the place."

Officer and a Gentleman (1982): "You know something, you ain't nothing special. You got no manners, you treat woman like whores and if you ask me you got no chance of being no officer."

The Princess Bride (1987): "You have always been so kind to me, and I won't be seeing you again since I'm killing myself once we reach the honeymoon suite."

Say Anything (1989): "You're not a permanent part of her life. You're a distraction." (podcast)

Can't Buy Me Love (1987): "Oh yeah, she's a big conquest. She's given more rides than Greyhound!"

Some Kind of Wonderful (1986): "Get your skag and let's go." (podcast)

Roxanne (1987): "Your breasts, they're like melons. No, no, they're like pillows. Can I fluff your pillows?"

About Last Night (1986): "You don't know what love is. You've gotten everything you have always wanted and now you're feeling sorry for yourself because there's something you want and you can't have it. But you had it! I gave you love. But you asked me to leave and I left. "

Secret Admirer (1985): "Jesus! You are one gutsy virgin!"

Somewhere in Time
(1980): "I am an actress, William, not a doormat. Do not attempt to wipe your boots on me."

Always (1989): "I can't be with a guy that looks like I won him in a raffle."

Pretty in Pink (1986): "That girl was, is, and always will be nada!" (podcast)

Gregory's Girl
(1981): "At least you've stopped kissing me like I was your aunty."

Hard to Hold
(1984): "Will you stop harassing me? I know who you are, you're a rock person of some sort."

The Sure Thing
(1985): "I was in Paris once with my wife... boy am I glad she's dead."

I always thought the line was "Get your skag and let's roll." Hmm.

The Rachel Papers features Ione Skye -- reason enough to watch it. She's the only reason I watch "Fever Pitch" over and over again these days. (She plays one of Drew Barrymoore's friends.)

Steve, I am also a huge Gregory's Girl fan. It rings so true about first loves/obsessions, but with a lighter, quirkier touch than any American films I've seen.

If you do that podcast on unappreciated films of the 80's (and I sure hope you do) don't forget Local Hero, by the same writer/director.

And I'll definitely be on the lookout for The Rachel Papers!

Spears

By the way, I'm also a huge fan of the very similar The Rachel Papers in 1989.

Gregory's Girl is one of my all-time favorites from back in the day. They used to show it non-stop on cable back then, so the lines have stuck with me.

If we ever do a podcast on unappreciated movies of the 80s, that's on the list to discuss.

JoJo

Gregory's Girl?! I didn't think anyone else knew about Gregory's Girl. What a classic!!

Bassnote

Here's one from Halloween 2:

"Passion and grace, come sit on my face."

there's a much funnier line from Secret Admirer, but I can understand why you didn't use it in the blog, steve.

Great list!
