'Wild at heart and weird on top'
After hearing a rumor that Laura Dern is playing the role of Katherine Harris in an HBO movie about the botched 2000 presidential election, I may never be able to watch another of her 80s flicks again.
And that'd be a shame, because she's in some classics:
Teachers in 1984 stands out ("Mr. Jurel, I just had an abortion. I think I'm old enough to smoke."). So does Blue Velvet in '86 ("I can't figure out if you're a detective or a pervert."). Same with Mask in '85 (though Stoltz still gives me nightmares).
However, what I remember her best for is Wild at Heart with Nic Cage, made in the unspeakable year of 1990. But I'm grandfathering it into the 80s -- just for today.
Top 3 Laura Dern lines in Wild at Heart:
3. "One of these days the sun's gonna come up and burn a hole clean through the planet like a giant electrical x-ray."
2. "Uh oh. Baby, you'd better get me back to that hotel. You got me hotter than Georgia asphalt."
1. "This whole world's wild at heart and weird on top."

Haven't seen Wild at Heart in ages so this quote may be a little off, but I loved it when they're in the car and she yells "If you don't find some good music on this radio I'm going to scream!"

ARGH! Wicked Game is what I remember from Wild at Heart. Chris Isaak-meowwwww.
Sadly, this blog also reminds me of Dennis Hopper being all creepy and inhaling oxygen and getting even more freaky-creepy, "don't you look at me!!!!" I'm scared. VERY scared. I had nightmares after watching Blue Velvet. Thanks a lot Steve! ::curling up in fetal position::

I never saw this one. I lost my taste for David Lynch movies after Blue Velvet.

Having been shown at Cannes in May of 1990, is it not possible that it was FILMED in 1989?

Oh, I'm sure it was filmed in 1989, but under that same rationale, just about any movie that debuted in 1980 would have to be considered a 1979 movie.
"Wild At Heart" really doesn't have an 80s feel anyway. It's clearly a 90s movie. (For that matter, Blue Velvet seems more 90s too.)
I did catch "Teachers" on cable a few weeks ago really early in the morning. That's a movie they just don't show much anymore. It was pretty entertaining. Any movie with Nick Nolte in it has a chance to be entertaining.

I'm still stuck on Wicked Game. Funny that's all I remember from the movie. Well, that and thinking Nicholas Cage creeps me out no matter what role he's playing...except Guarding Tess. HE didn't creep me out in that, but that's a 90s flick.
I leave you with this:
What a wicked game to play, to make me feel this way.
What a wicked thing to do, to let me dream of you.
What a wicked thing to say, you never felt this way.
What a wicked thing to do, to make me dream of you and,
I want to fall in love. (This world is only gonna break your heart)
No, I want to fall in love. (This world is only gonna break your heart)
With you.
Okay, now that's really creepin' me out after reading it. :)
