A Shue-in for greatness
Here's my theory, and feel free to tell me I'm wrong: I can pass on "Cocktail." Pretty sure I can kick "The Karate Kid." Because when it comes to Elisabeth Shue, I'm ga-ga over "Adventures in Babysitting."
I think 1987's "Babysitting" was Shue's really classic role in the 80s. (And if it hadn't been for "Leaving Last Vegas" in '95 -- perhaps maybe her signature role?) Shue, who turns 44 today, plays a reluctant babysitter, forced to watch over two kids too old for a sitter (Maia Brewton and Keith Coogan) when fate drags them into a surreal nocturnal adventure through the back streets of downtown Chicago.
How well do you know the movie? Can you answer these 5 trivia questions?
1. What odd accessory does the tow-truck driver have?
2. What mythical figure does young Sarah worship?
3. When they find themselves trapped in a nightclub, what must the group do in order to leave?
4. How many stitches does Brad get after he's caught in the middle of a gang fight?
5. Who is the babysitter mistaken for several times in the movie?
And now for the "Nobody Leaves the Blog Item with the Top 5" list of favorite quotes:
5. "You wouldn't believe what that girl would do for 20 bucks!"
4. "Now boys, if either of you give me any grief I swear to God I'll kill you. Dead, murdered, stabbed."
3. "Don't touch it! It could get infected, Jesus! He could get anything - Tetanus, rabies, scabies, emphysema!"
2. "It's really scary here. I've just seen three people shoot up, a bald Chinese lady with no pants on, and there's this old guy outside who wants his bedroom slippers!"
1. "Don't f--- with the babysitter."

YES!
Shue is pretty underrated. Steve, you are now officially a demi-god by reading my mind on this topic. Heck, I'll admit it, I'm still in love with her. She made Babysitting and Cocktail actually decent movies.
Va-va-voom! Can't help with the 5 questions......my memory is currently studying for mid-terms.

Whoops, should have put my name up there.

I think Karate Kid was her best role from the 80's. Who wouldn't want to have rich, supportive, hottie for a girlfriend. Especially, if you're from the wrong side of the tracks. Gave hope to a bunch of us.

My problem with the Karate Kid is that she looked bigger than Ralph Macchio. I think she could have taken out Daniel-San during the final karate match better than that Cobra Kai dope.
Also, all her friends hated Daniel-San, so if I'm Ralph, I'm thinking this isn't an ideal girlfriend. (Not to mention that I guess she dumps him on prom night, which is the beginning of Karate Kid 2).

Thanks god I'm not the only one that has a thing for Elisabeth Shue...
Oh, the things I thought of watching Babysitting and Karate Kid.. :)

Steve, I'm surprised you didn't ask about the unlikely actor who played the Thor look-a-like...
Know who it was? Anyone? Bueller? Anyone?
(And clicking on IMDb is cheating! I call!)

I cheated and checked!! I never put one and one together. Good one Rick.

What's the classic line that Vincent gives the little girl at the end though?
Posted by: Spears | October 08, 2007 at 02:31 PM
I LOVE this movie. I have them singing the blues on my iPod. Also, the classic by Edwin Starr - 25 Miles. Favorite quote - "Don't f$#* with the babysitter" and I like when they go into the restaurant to confront Mike and Daryl shoves him into the food.

1. a hook for a hand
2. Thor
3. sing the blues
4. one stitch
5. a Playboy centerfold
I love this movie too. My favorite scene is when Brenda tries to buy a hot dog from the vendor with a check.
Vendor: "You slip me the cash, and I'll slip you the wiener."
Brenda: "But I don't have any cash!"
Vendor: "Then I don't have a wiener!"
Too funny!
