Sean Daly is a couch potato

Sean1 The Stuck in the 80s crew had a busy day on Friday. First , we recorded our next show, which hopefully will go online in the next couple days.

Then we spent a few hours at Banana's Music in St. Petersburg, where Sean Daly spent two hours posing for the cameras -- all part of a campaign to promote his enormous mug for the newspaper. Take a look at the behind-the-scene photos I took and give him credit: He defied certain death by climbing onto a couch 8 feet off the ground.

Sean2 I was supposed to be there to spot him, possibly catching his falling torso and saving his miserable life. Instead I chose to browse what has to be the largest vinyl record store in the world. Seriously, where else can you find a dozen mint copies of Loverboy's "Get Lucky" album?

Sean3 Sean picked up a copy of Night Ranger's "Midnight Madness" album on vinyl, which he fondled for the remainder of the day. I no longer own a turntable, so I was happy to instead grab CDs of "The Best of .38 Special" (playing now in my headphones? "If I'd Been the One"), "Best of Talking Heads" and The Velvet Underground's "Andy Warhol" album.

The store's owner, Doug Allen, and I chatted about some of the rare albums of the 80s -- music from the decade played nonstop during our visit. (Hey, fans of The Producers. He's got a few of their discs -- and much cheaper than they're going for on Amazon or eBay.)

Later that night, Sean dragged me from my desk, forced me to drink alcoholic beverages, ordered 50 chicken wings and refused to let me go home until I dropped his incoherent carcass off at his house after midnight. But that's another blog item. Pop a couple aspirin and enjoy the album, buddy.

In the third photo, it appears Sean is grunting with purpose.
I think a throw with a faux animal print on it should have been on the couch, but that's just me.

Sweet shots, Steve. I'm lovin' the shirt Sean's wearing. Red brings out the fear in his eyes.

Wow Steve I am surprised to hear that you don't know a turntable. I thought that was a prerequisite to being stuck in the 80s.

I'd love to buy a turntable -- I might still do it someday. I'm just really bad when it comes to maintaining vinyl records.

I'm curious. Is the couch always in the middle of the store/warehouse, up on that platform? Or was that brought in as a prop for Sean to layback in his lofty domain of musical splendor?

I am mocked relentlessly for not wanting to part with any of my vinyl. I've been trolling eBay and estate sales for a decent stand-alone turntable to keep in my office (can anyone suggest what I should be looking for?).

There is something to be said about listening to Genesis "Abacab" and Rush "Signals," anticipating the exact spots that skip during "Man on the Corner" and "Subdivisions," and remembering how I played those songs over and over and over in my room.

I had problems with my "Signals" album too. Freaky.

Steve,

On the subject of The Producers, did you get the care package I sent you?

I bought my last turntable in 1987, but I've moved 10 times since then, and after the first three or four, I stopped unpacking it, and somewhere around move number 8, I sold it along with all of my vinyl.

It seemed like such a good idea at the time!

In the first pic... did you guys prop up a copy of Huey Lewis & The News Sports album for the shot, or was that a coincidence? LOL

Checked out the website to see about getting a copy of the Producers... but they don't have cd's available online yet... bummer!

Bravo to whoever was responsible for the mis-en-scene. I just noticed the Huey Lewis album in the first shot.

...yet again Carla and I share a brain wave.

I noticed that, too. I'm wondering if Sean was taking a swipe at it with his foot.

Sean and the photographer chose the albums that sit beneath him.

Hey Jeff -- Yes, I got your care package. Thanks so much! Received it right before the photo shoot yesterday. I think Sean's going to borrow it next week.

Marissa,

I was going to say he looked like he was taking a dump on it, but yours is probably more acceptable.

By the way, I'm listening to my Saturday radio show (recorded yesterday). I don't really like the sound of my radio voice, but I can't argue with my taste in music!

I used the term "grunting with purpose" in my first comment, Jeff. I'm such a delicate flower, you know.

Steve,

I'm going to send you some recorded shows, but I wanted to wait until after Wednesday's show when I'll play my Jack Blades interview.

I'll be at the reception for Jack and the band tomorrow night. If you get a chance to talk to him tonight, let him know we are all really excited down here.

I just read that the new B-52's release will also be available on vinyl. I am always surprised when I find new releases on vinyl.

Sean is looking svelte in these photos!!!

Asia Alpha? aka, "The Dorm Room Painting?"

Classic. I tip my cap to you, sir.

Christine, I noticed the same thing. For a guy who says he's "chunky but funky," I'm seeing otherwise.

Hey Jeff -- I didn't get a chance to chat up Blades, but hopefully he'll remember me as the guy who did the band introductions.

Did you read he forgot his passport?

Tell him hi for Sean and me.

Marissa, I think there's a top secret Nerds and Funions diet out there that Sean is keeping on the DL.
