'It's hard to bargle nawdle zouss'
Ah yes, just the antidote we all need to fight off the uber-tours from the likes of Van Halen, Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi. Weird Al Yankovic has just announced plans for a summer tour of the U.S.
It's been two years since Weird Al's last album -- "Straight Outta Lynwood." These days, he's more likely to spend his time on short tours and directing music videos for other acts. (The Presidents of the United States of America recently enlisted Weird Al's help shooting and directing their video for "Mixed Up SOB.")
For this summer tour, the gigs start June 27 in Henderson, Nev., and run until late August. No dates are scheduled for Florida this time around, so I guess I'm have to wait longer to catch Weird Al live. In the meantime...
TOP FIVE WEIRD AL VIDEOS:
5. MONEY FOR NOTHING/BEVERLY HILLBILLIES: Originally a dream scene in Weird Al's movie "UHF." [Watch]
4. LIKE A SURGEON: My anti-Madonna psyche just can't get enough of this one. [Watch]
3. FAT: Disturbing on so many levels. (Also reminds of me "Dune." Don't ask why.) [Watch]
2. SMELLS LIKE NIRVANA: Best line - "A garage band, from Seattle, well it sure beats, raising cattle" or, OR ... "It's hard to bargle nawdle zouss, with all these marbles in my mouth." [Watch]
1. EAT IT: So good, you can never tell if it's "Eat It" or "Beat It" until you find out if the guy at the lunch counter spits out his drink in the beginning. [Watch]

Relive the music, movies and culture of the greatest decade ever with Times online editor Steve Spears. A teen during the decade, Steve is obsessed with everything from Duran Duran to Journey, John Hughes to John Cusack, and parachute pants to Reaganomics.
E-mail Steve Spears:

"Smells Like Nirvana" was one of the funniest videos ever. I almost fell out of my chair when the barnyard animals were introduced to the piece. Good times, good times...

Actually, I had Amish Paradise at No. 2 on my first draft of this blog post. But then I remembered "Smells Like Nirvana."

I think the video for "Amish Paradise" deserves an honorable mention, at the very least.

When's the Weird Al podcast?
It certainly needs to be in the line-up before "Novelty Songs of the 80's, Vol II".

With a setup like that, how can one not ask why the video for "Fat" reminds you of "Dune"? Seriously.

My younger brother forced my Parents to take him to see Al at a local Jr. College a few years back. My parents were in their late 60's then, and they said it was enjoyable.

I got a chance to see Weird Al a few years ago and I have to say he puts on a really good show. Well worth the effort, and dare i say it. fun for the whole family? One of the few artists that Moms, Dads, and kids can enjoy!
I met Al in person in 1992 in Buffalo. He was in town for a show and he came to the movie theater I was working in to see Batman Returns which had just opened. I was runnign the projectors by that time in my career, but lucky for me I just happened to be out in the lobby for a few minutes when he came up to me and asked where the 1130 show was. I didn't let on that I knew who he was at that time, but I told my boss he was in the house and he said he thought he still had some UHF promotional stuff laying about in the office SWAG bin. So we sifted through and found a cassette copy of the soundtrack which I had him autograph after the show. He was very gracious and nice. He joked that he didn't think anyone actually owned the soundtrack! I had a CD copy at home, but this was nice. I still have it tucked away somewhere. A brief encounter, to be sure, but memorable for me. You just didn't meet that many celebrities in Buffalo, unless they were athletes like members of the Bills or Sabres.
