Modern-day 'Breakfast Club' gets thumbs-up
A script for a new movie called "Bumped" is being billed as "The Breakfast Club" of today's generation.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the story revolves around five "twenty-somethings" -- from different cliques, of course -- who find themselves thrown together when they're bumped from an airline flight out of Chicago.
(Nice touch keeping the Chi-town angle in there. Somewhere, John Hughes is smiling -- and scratching off Lotto tickets.)
Just like our beloved "Breakfast Club," the strangers eventually find common ground and befriend each other during the long layover. The diverse characters including a musician, a flirt and a corporate go-getter.
No actors have signed onto the project yet, but Bridget Johnson and Anna Mastro are on board to produce and direct, according to the Reporter.
FIVE FORGOTTEN LINES FROM THE BREAKFAST CLUB:
5. "Were you truly disgusted with what I did with my lipstick?"
4. "Screws fall out all the time, the world is an imperfect place."
3. "Do you think I'd speak for you? I don't even know your language."
2. "I don't screw to get respect. That's the difference between you and me."
1. "We're all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it, that's all."

THIS WEEK'S SHOW: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers rock Tampa Bay. To hear the latest "Stuck in the 80s" episode now,

Sounds like an interesting film, although I had always hoped they would have done the "what happened on Monday" Breakfast Club 2. Then again, it probably would have sucked, so maybe its better that they didn't do it.

I'm going to be such a cynic on this project. I so miss the magic that John Hughes created on the silver screen.
COME OUT! COME OUT! Mr. Hughes, I beg of you to come back to us.
Sorry. I got a little dramatic.

A movie about people sitting around an airport talking? Sounds exciting! I'm going to join Marissa in the cynic corner.

Sweet, Big Tex! I love company. Bring snacks.

What? ""Screws fall out all the time, the world is an imperfect place" is a forgotten line? No way- I spring that one on someone at least once a week, it's a standby. I just can't get excited about this new movie- maybe if the group were a late 30s'/early 40's update of the Breakfast Club archtypes, then I'd have a bit more hope for it.

I'll avoid this one.

Hey Steve, iTunes does not have the podcast yet.

That was me.

I used to look forward to remakes of classic 80's content. For example, I stuck with the so-so "Hunter" remake for a couple episodes, because it reunited Fred Dryer and Stepfanie Kramer from the original series.
And "The Brady Bunch Movie" was pretty funny, because it satirized the original. Gary Cole's retro take on the "Mike Brady" character was hilarious.
But then I saw the TERRIBLE Knight Rider TV movie on NBC last month. Even the Hoff's 60-second cameo couldn't fix this clunker!
Here's one return trip to the 80's I'd like to see: a "Family Ties" reunion. Seeing the cast reunited on the Today Show made me remember how great that show was.

In every airport I've been in lately, all the twenty-somethings are so deeply involved with their iPods, Blackberry's, PSPs, and laptops that they wouldn't notice if Judd Nelson snubbed out a Kool on their forehead.
You want people talking to complete strangers in an airport? That's the Larry Craig movie, and it appeals to a different demographic.

Podcast is on iTunes now. Thanks for the heads-up.

I have to agree with Sherrie. My friend uses the "Screws fall out all the time, the world is an imperfect place" line all the time.
Particularly, when I'm giving him grief about messing something up.

Blah blah blah FERRIS BUELLER 2: ANOTHER DAY OFF blah blah blah. Blah blah blah, Steve, blah blah.

Seriously though, the ages in BUMPED makes it a whole lot less appealing.
I mean, teenagers who can't figure out life/feel put upon/feel confined, that's one thing. Compassion and empathy for such would be nearly universal. But for 20-somethings? Who would want to watch 20-somethings whining for two hours?
Oh wait. Darren Starr became a millionaire with that gag-reflex-inducing schtick. But maybe it's because it was free and really for only 42 minutes (excluding commercials).

Jeff in Cuba wins for the best Larry Craig reference of the day! Made me laugh out loud--totally hilarious!! :-) And I agree that people in their 20's aren't a good choice for the "new" BC film--it should be 30's-40's. But then again those aren't the bulk of the filmgoing audience or the sought after demographic, so there you have it.
