Top Gun tunes: a target-rich environment
There's some enduring quality to Top Gun. I just can't leave it alone on the blog.
Maybe it's because it's on TV about 30 times a day (seriously -- I watched it start to finish twice yesterday). Maybe it's the great quotable lines. It could even be the "not that there's anything wrong with that" volleyball scene. (Well, no, it can't be that.)
Or maybe it's just got a killer soundtrack that keeps us hooked throughout the entire film.
But what are the best and worst tunes of Top Gun? Here's my ranking of them -- from best to worst -- in playable format:

Relive the music, movies and culture of the greatest decade ever with Times online editor Steve Spears. A teen during the decade, Steve is obsessed with everything from Duran Duran to Journey, John Hughes to John Cusack, and parachute pants to Reaganomics.

Sweet! I hadn't goofed with my IMEEM account in about a month. That's a month from the day I signed up.
I woke up with Top Gun on the brain. Thanks Spearsy. Ugh.

Top Gun was on TV as I feel asleep last night, so I'm stuck with that for blog fodder today.

And I've thought more about Top Gun in the past two days then I have in the entire 20 years since it was released. Heresy, I know.
I'd move Jerry Lee and his Great Balls of Fire a little higher on the list, but it otherwise works for me.

From the techno challenged crowd - I have no idea how you embedded the soundtrack into the blog, but that is so cool to be able to click and listen. Very nice.
Was a cool movie. Volleyball scene, not so much, but otherwise a good watch.

Move "Great Balls Of Fire" , "Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay", and "Danger Zone" up a few notches each. I still hate this movie, but I can deal with the soundtrack.

"Seriously -- I watched it start to finish twice yesterday"
Not just once -- but twice!
And yet, you're STILL the private dick who's a sex machine to all the chicks.
You never cease to amaze me, Spearsy.

Spears!
Ya damn right! (Can you dig it?)

Oh, Sean Daly! You know you make me gurgle on my own drool plenty.
In fact, I thought of you in the wee hours this morning. I was watching, "GOTCHA!" with Linda Fiorentino. I couldn't help but think about your near spot-on impersonation of her during the Vision Question podcast. You are one sexy b*i*t*c*h

err, that's Vision QUEST, not question.

lots of horrible stuff on the soundtrack - everything ever done by Miami Sound Machine is in fact pure horror alone... my fave would be Take My Breath Away by Berlin as well, though of course Berlin have done way superior songs to my ears (The Metro, Masquerade, No More Words)...

"Masquerade" was my all-time Berlin fav song.

Was "Playing With the Boys" done by Kenny Loggins? At work, we were commenting on how lame the whole volleyball scene is now.
Great list Spears!

Masquerade was good, but nothing gets an adolescent boy's motor going like "Sex (I'm A)"!

I HATE "You Lost That Loving Feeling". Otherwise, the Top Gun soundtrack is fantastic! I had it on cassette tape.

Regardng You've Lost That Loving Feeling - don't like the original a lot, but there is a great cover by The Human League, which I think is miles ahead of the original...

When my wife and I were dating in high school back in '86; Berlin's "Take My Breath Away" was our song. I remember it was track 4 on the front side of the album. We broke up and dated again a couple more times before it finally stuck. But by then we had decided that we needed a new song and went with "Everything You Do" by Bryan Adams for our dance at our wedding in '91. Though I still have a soft spot in my heart for "Take My Breath Away."
