A couple of Sharp Dressed Men
American Idol Season 7 winner David Cook seems pretty happy to be playing "Sharp Dressed Man" with ZZ Top during Wednesday night's finale. (Despite his '90s posturing, we always knew he was a child of the '80s all along.)
ZZ Top wasn't the only '80s act in the house. Bryan Adams and George Michael both brought down the house when they showed up on stage during medleys of their 80s hits.
(Plus, my final American Idol '80s connection of the year: Admit it ... Cook clinched this competition when he belted out his rendition of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" earlier this season.)

Relive the music, movies and culture of the greatest decade ever with Times online editor Steve Spears. A teen during the decade, Steve is obsessed with everything from Duran Duran to Journey, John Hughes to John Cusack, and parachute pants to Reaganomics.
E-mail Steve Spears:

That little ol' band from Texas! I haven't heard from them in a while - its good to know they're not taking a dirt nap.
In typical journalistic fashion (no offense, Spearsy), the Houston paper is claiming Cook as "Houston's very own" because he was born thre. I'm sure they wouldn't be making that claim if Archeleta had won...
Paula really made a fool of herself with George Michael (more than usual, I mean). Maybe she didn't get the memo about which team he plays for.

Once again, we get to see how white bread american music is. Artists who can't even make a song their own, without spooning out of the proverbial dish of 'what's cool now'. And that's the sad part. That version was popular months ago, and now because some little facial hair growing kid made it public in prime time, there will be this big resurgence of people thinking their cool because they think they're listening the most recent music out their. Much like the sensation just after you've eaten a bag of funyuns. I think I just through up in my mouth!

The Chris Cornell version is really good.

The two hour show was such a waste! A one hour quality show would have been much more enjoyable. The trash like showing the "no talent" people who were eliminated in the beginning is one example. As far as I'm concerned both john's won.........they were great!

Steve, George Michael was so incredible. SD saying he preferred the Carrie Underwear version from earlier this season on the "Idol Gives Back" night made me upchuck my dinner. He so lost sexy points on that one.

I am so glad I don't have to work tomorrow and when I go to work on Friday hopefully the girls will have found something besides American Idol to talk about.

Never mind, just found out that it's a Chris Cornell version.

Holy crap, I don't even watch American Idol but that rendition of Billie Jean was awesome! How do they come up with something like that? Did he create it on his own or do they help them?

Did you notice that George Michael did not sing until the AI contestants were off the stage. Makes me like George all the more.
