'Square Pegs' finally wins popularity contest

Square_pegs It took 25 years, but die-hard fans of "Square Pegs" finally get their wish: The complete series will soon be available on DVD.

A very young (and far cuter) Sarah Jessica Parker starred in the TV series, which lasted only the 1982-83 season. The May 20 release date of the DVD set coincides with the debut of Parker's "Sex in the City" movie.

According to a review by the Washington Post, the three-disc set sadly lacks an audio commentary and deleted scenes. But a short documentary -- "Weemawee Yearbook Memories" -- reunites most of the major players (including Amy Linker, Jami Gertz and Tracy Nelson), who talk at length about the experience of making the show.

Tribute is also paid to actor Merritt Butrick, who played "Johnny Slash." Butrick, also known to "Star Trek" fans as "Dr. David Marcus" (and to "Zapped" fans as "Gary"), died of AIDS in 1989.

Among the highlights of the 20-show set are guest appearances by Bill Murray, Devo, Martin Mull, John Desmore and Tony Dow.

It is insane just how happy this makes me. Thanks for the scoop Steve!

Jami Gertz. Damn.

Even though watching "Still Standing" makes me want to injure myself, seeing her makes it all worth while.

Still beautiful after all these years.

In every review I read no one can confirm that all the original music is still intact. After what they did to the DVDs of "WKRP in Cincinnati" (replacing most of the period music with cheaper to license covers) I'd hate to spend the money on "Square Pegs" and find the same thing.

So.... can we all still be besties even if I have never (ever) seen an episode of Square Pegs?

Yes! I was so unhappy when SJP started straightening her hair. She inspired me as a teen that curls were OK.

I immediately wondered the same thing about the music, Skippy. My guess is that the music will indeed be replaced (as it was on the "WKRP" DVDs, and on the "Northern Exposure" DVD set released a few years back). I hate that they do that.

They also replaced the music on the Wonder Years DVD's. I heard they are asking so much money for the songs. It really bothers me when they do that, but maybe they need to make the songs more affordable. I never knew that Johnny Slash died of AIDS. That is too bad.

This delight ran on the telly during my freshman year in college, so I didn't see too many episodes during the original run. But I do remember making a point to watch the shows featuring my sports crush of the time: Steve Sax.

And who can't love a show with that eclectic group of guest stars. Anne Beatts certainly created a classic little gem.

Wow! How timely is the podcast theme for this week, kids? I think it's serendipity or something fate-ish.

Ah! Square Pegs! I don`t think i ever watched it,but that theme song!!
Just because of that,i`ll get that DVD!

I have never seen Square Pegs or heard the theme song...I will have to get the dvd shipped to Oz.

This news just thrills me! It is so hard to believe the show was only on for one season but yet is so memorable.

This is so cool. Square Pegs is my favorite high school comedy ever. I think I killed it by being a fan. Any show I like gets canceled.

Man, I can't believe Johnny Slash is dead. He was the coolest.
