You need a podcast on rollerskates!
Welcome to the summer, 80s friends. It's time for a little sun, outdoor frivolity and sunsets at the beach. Or in the case of Stuck in the 80s co-host Sean Daly and myself, a lot of staying indoors in the air-conditioning, swilling 40-ounce beverages and making Gretzky's head bleed on Sega Genesis.
But if you'd like to summon the spirit of the season, look no further than the latest podcast: the Stuck in the 80s salute to summer! Click here to listen or click here to get all our shows for free via iTunes.
In this week's show, you'll hear our top 5 lists of summer movies and summer songs. Sean will explain his totally irrational and probably actionable hatred of "Summer School" star Mark Harmon. And finally, you'll want to dive into a pool afterward to drown your sorrow after hearing stories from two fans who had summers even sorrier than your's truly.
In the meantime, give a wave to Wonder Mutt, open up another cold one and pass the joystick.

Relive the music, movies and culture of the greatest decade ever with Times online editor Steve Spears. A teen during the decade, Steve is obsessed with everything from Duran Duran to Journey, John Hughes to John Cusack, and parachute pants to Reaganomics.

Angry!? Angry!? What makes you think I'm ANGRY!?
Oh. Er. Uhm.
Great little blog you have here, Steve, I uh, well, uhm...
Sorry if I've acted like a furry vestige.
(Sorry I missed the live chat. Then you would know that I'm not angry, but rather passionate, shall we say. Sort of like Marissa crossed with Bill Murray or Vince Vaughn. ;-)

We'll probably a whole show either on Summer Rental or John Candy at some point. Maybe "Summer Rental vs. The Great Outdoors." (Tough choice.)
Posted by: Spears | June 01, 2008 at 06:09 PM
Great to hear "Summertime Girls" get the love it deserves. And ditto on Richard Marx. He'd make a great interview for the show, I'm sure.
As for the movies... what, no "Summer Rental"?

Egad. I struck out trying to find Summer School to chill out and view this sunny afternoon.
Blockbuster did not carry the film and the 15 year old behind the counter was clueless when I asked him about it.
So off I go to Best Buy to simply add it to by DVD collection. But to my dismay they did not have the film either. And to make matters worse I spent over $40 while I was there.
So my Summer School afternoon will have to be postponed til next weekend when my now purchased copy from Amazon should be in my hot little hands.

Steve, I have to side with you on your selection of Summer School. Sean's reasoning against the flick is further evidence that professional help might be in order. ;)
After listening to the podcast I jumped on the computer and was shock to discover that the soundtrack is not readily available. Yet another treasure hunt to add to my list.
Loved the podcast. Loved the letters that were so graciously shared.
Oh please please please get a Richard Marx interview in the near future. One thing that I love about the man is that he is freakin' hilarious. The thought of Sean and Richard recounting their previous encounter would be an event I could sell tickets too. I am sure if you contacted him he would be totally up for it. He's a musical genius who doesn't take himself too seriously. And with 2 new CDs coming out soon I'd say it is perfect timing.
I am now off to my local BBV to see if I can rent Summer School today. :)

Still so angry, Rick?
Is it because you're named after the villain in "Last American Virgin?"
Posted by: Spears | June 01, 2008 at 07:20 AM
Oh, and "furry vestige" actually works quite well as a brief critique of the movie SUMMER LOVERS. ;-)
Posted by: Rick | June 01, 2008 at 03:51 AM
Okay, I'm listening to the 80s summer podcast. I've got
two words, Steve:
"Furry vestige."
Now that is one I'm determined to find a way to work
into every conversation from here on out. (I can only hope
that those present laugh as hard as I did.)
Posted by: Rick | June 01, 2008 at 03:50 AM
Aw, for crying out loud, Steve! A hero shot of SUMMER SCHOOL again!? And hot on the STD-sore-ridden heels of SUMMER LOVERS!?
I am with you, Sean -- What's gonna be the trifecta of cheese!? You waiting for us to complain and whine about how awful some third 80s summer flick is from that list of 20, so you can go hunting the Net for a screen capture/publicity still to post for tomorrow...?
Do you see a pattern here, Sean?
Hmm, let's see: how well does the stool stand with BEACHES as the third leg? You gonna cop to this being a "favorite" of yours, Mr. Spears?
I guess tomorrow will tell. ;-)
P.S. If you need a shot of Midler and Hershey cut & paste, my friend, cut & paste:

Posted by: CHAD | May 31, 2008 at 11:00 PM
the actress ya'll were talking about was kristin debell, dont think she became a porn actress. she did an erotic movie called alice in wonderland in '76.

steve, cant believe you didnt say my fake names. that might have been funny.
Posted by: CHAD | May 31, 2008 at 10:43 PM
great podcast guys, with richard marx no less. some might consider him a guilty pleasure, but im gonna man-up and say to me he isnt. i guess he's not for everyone, but he's a great songwriter, winning a grammy for song of the year a few years ago. i have to agree with the top 5 lists, especially vacation as number uno.
Posted by: CHAD | May 31, 2008 at 10:41 PM
I'll be watching "Meatballs" after I read to my kids.
Posted by: Bassnote | May 31, 2008 at 10:28 PM
Brandon, now I'll be singing "groove sauna" everytime I hear "Cruel Summer." Thanks, dude!
Summer School: Yuck for both student and teacher.
Posted by: Marissa | May 31, 2008 at 10:03 PM
I'm a teacher, and I've taught summer school once and only once in my career. It was a horrible experience. But it just so happened that HBO was showing the movie 'Summer School' in near nightly rotation during the 5 weeks that I was teaching.
I watched that movie at least once a week, and it helped make the experience slightly more tolerable.
P.S. When I first heard the song "Cruel Summer" in The Karate Kid, I thought they were singing "Groove Sauna." (Try it, it sorta fits.) The actual title of the song was pointed out to me years later, much to my embarassment, by an '80s-loving girlfriend.

OK, people. I'll be listening to the greatness that is podcast #128 for the 3rd time. Meanwhile, y'all are doing -- stuff.
Posted by: Marissa | May 31, 2008 at 09:39 PM
Is there anybody out there? Just knock if you can hear me...
Posted by: Marissa | May 31, 2008 at 09:20 PM
I'll try and listen here shortly!
Posted by: Mike in Austin | May 31, 2008 at 06:54 PM
HA! I was pretty damned pathetic.
What's ironic is that you played a snippet of "I'm So Excited" which, by the way, was playing the first time I ever made out.
Posted by: Marissa | May 31, 2008 at 06:44 PM
Sean cried afterward. Then he pulled out a hanky, leaned back and turned the lights off in the podcast studio.
I'm hoping he was just napping.
Posted by: Spears | May 31, 2008 at 06:41 PM
It's sort of hard for me to be objective. Sean read the letter with such heart. I nearly wept.
Posted by: Marissa | May 31, 2008 at 06:31 PM
What did you think overall? I really wasn't happy with the show when Sean and I finished recording it.
Posted by: Spears | May 31, 2008 at 06:30 PM
Hell to the yeah.
Posted by: Marissa | May 31, 2008 at 06:29 PM
You like the candlesticks and glass table, idea?
Posted by: Spears | May 31, 2008 at 06:27 PM
Oh, and I'm with Sean on the omission of "Little Darlings" Maybe not top 5 worthy, but still top 10.
Posted by: Marissa | May 31, 2008 at 06:19 PM
Spearsy! I'm speechless!
Posted by: Marissa | May 31, 2008 at 06:17 PM
Which means I'm here to chat live with tonight. Because as Richard Gere says in "Officer and a Gentleman" .. "I got nowhere else to go!"
Posted by: Spears | May 31, 2008 at 06:00 PM
Just now listening to the final version myself.
Posted by: Spears | May 31, 2008 at 05:59 PM
Boy, the way you two were going at each other, I thought we were going to hear some fisticuffs. Sean is dead wrong about "Summer School," it is a great comedy. But, he is right about "Vacation" being #1. It is the ultimate summer movie. Nice to hear "Summertime Girls" as the #1 summer song. Great Job, I'm off to go listen again.
