Sunday's chat: Earworms of the 80s
Poor B.A. He has a bad case of the "80s earworm" -- where a song drills its insanely catchy lyrics deep into the head of an innocent music fan.
The whole irony is that the best cure for an earworm is simply humming the theme to "The A-Team." (Special thanks to former podcast co-host Cathy Wos for revealing that important knowledge to Stuck in the 80s fans.)
Sunday's chat topics: Earworms of the 80s -- which songs do you find impossible to get out of your head? (Me? It's "Living in a Box" and "Mr. Roboto" ... "I'm not a hero! I'm not a savior! Forget what you know! I'm just a man whose circumstances went beyond his control!")
Also: We chatted about the much-contested list of Best John Cusack Movies, this week's podcast and the upcoming Vegas trip!
Thanks to everyone who turned up for the chat. Remember, we'll take next Sunday off.

Relive the music, movies and culture of the greatest decade ever with Times online editor Steve Spears. A teen during the decade, Steve is obsessed with everything from Duran Duran to Journey, John Hughes to John Cusack, and parachute pants to Reaganomics.

Why would Sean volunteer to do the cavity search on me? What could he expect to find there?

Miguel - you forgot the part where Sean volunteers to do the cavity search on you.

John,
Nothing's shutting down (at least not that they've told me), it was just a slow news day and the AP was indulging in some "what if" stuff.
Here's another interesting press story. We took the kids to the beach Saturday, and we had just got back home (I was hosing off beach gear in the front yard) when a van pulls up with a camera crew from the San Diego ABC affiliate, and asks if I can give them a quick interview. So while they set up the chairs and cameras in my front yard, I raced upstairs and threw on a uniform. We did abnout 30 minutes talking mostly utilities and infrastructure.
Unless the news in San Diego has gotten a lot more boring than when I lived there, I don't think I will see any air time, but it was certianly one of those surreal, "only-in-GTMO" moments.

All right,Jane! I´ll write a full script anyday soon. This was just the teaser.
Posted by: Miguel | June 30, 2008 at 01:22 PM
That's cool, Jeff! I didn't know the prison was shutting down!
Posted by: John Hays | June 30, 2008 at 12:56 PM
BRAVO! Brilliant! Encore!
I'm seeing at least a one-hour special based just on this script.

Steve i was just taking a look at our chat and it took my attention when you said the US customs would deny my entry to Las Vegas because of my comments on Top Gun.I`m imagining that conversation:
US customs:Good morning,sir!
Miguel:Good morning.
US:Could you please put your keys, coins or any other metal object in here please?
Miguel:Sure,no problem.
US:Ok,could we ask you a few questions?
Miguel:Sure.
US:What do you think of Bruce Springsteen?
Miguel:I respect him.
US:Correct. We would also take "i love him".What about Top Gun?
Miguel:It´s pretty gay,i believe.
US:WHAT? Wrong answer!! There`s no way Top Gun is gay. There´s nothing gay about muscled men rubbed in oil playing volleyball!I`m affraid i can´t let you in.
Miguel:What? But i have friends expecting me.The "host" said they need me to complete the package. They need my immaturity. They need me!
US:Look at the boy "they need me,they need me".You europeans are so snob thinking you´re better than us with all your culture and soccer.Guess what,we are the biggest empire in the world right now!
Miguel:Isn´t it China? By the way it´s not soccer it´s football. At least we don´t have sports like your "football" and baseball.Sports as boring as watch paint dry!
US:NO!! Blasphemy!Escort this man to a plain as fast as possible.
And there would go poor Miguel back to Europe joining Boy George in the list of people who couldn´t get in the Us.
THE END

BTW, speaking of Kenny Loggins, I'm still waiting on him to back up his mention of getting back to the more rocky stuff like what he did during his 80's heyday. I loved his stuff in Top Gun, Caddyshack, etc....bring that stuff on!

Posted by: CHAD | June 30, 2008 at 12:27 AM
That's quite a song, Steve. I listened to it earlier. I tend to skip around on playlists.

Posted by: Spears | June 30, 2008 at 12:27 AM

"Positively Lost Me" by the Rave-Ups is now keeping my neighbors awake.

If it makes you feel better, it took just as long to record. That damn intro sucked up all our time.
Posted by: Spears | June 30, 2008 at 12:25 AM
my funyon consumption has gone up since theyve been featured in the podcasts.
Posted by: CHAD | June 30, 2008 at 12:23 AM
John, it was only 28 mins long. That's about 15 mins less than the normal 'cast.
Posted by: Marissa | June 30, 2008 at 12:23 AM
Lou also has a cameo in the Hulk that came out a few years back.
Posted by: Bassnote | June 30, 2008 at 12:23 AM
The podcast was indeed shorter than normal. There might be a couple weeks when we don't do a show. Just depends on vacation schedules.
Posted by: Spears | June 30, 2008 at 12:23 AM
Marissa - YES!! I am always looking for that clip online and can't find it! Funniest Family Guy clip ever!
