Top Gun sequel? Crash and burn, Mav...
How come every time Tom Cruise makes the news, everyone's immediate reaction is to wince and say something along the lines of ... "Oh, no, no, for the love of Joel Goodsen and all that's holy, NOOOOOO!"
Here goes: Tom Cruise is in talks with Hollywood studios to produce and star in a sequel to 1986's "Top Gun." (Somewhere, Val Kilmer just awoke suddenly in bed and screamed out in horror -- though that could be because he hasn't made a decent movie in 10 years.)
News is just leaking out on the Web that Cruise would reprise his role as "Lt. Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell," this time playing a flight instructor at the Navy's "Top Gun" school. But instead of tangling with Kelly "Charlie" McGillis, he must come to grips with a cocky female pilot.
Well, at least the plot sounds realistic. But if that pilot is played by Katie Holmes, I will seriously disavow the '80s and go tend sheep in the Greek isles ... and try to live out my "Summer Lovers" fetish.
If this remake must be made though...
TOP 5 PLOT POINTS FOR TOP GUN SEQUEL:
5. Miley Cyrus as the female pilot maybe? No, go with Mia Sara as the female pilot ... because she and Cruise worked SO well together 1985's "Legend." (OK, she's 40 years old, but she's also well-rested.)
4. Terri Nunn and Berlin are enlisted to offer up another classic song for the love theme. They pick "Sex," because the lyrics are very romantic. ("I'm a man. I'm a Geisha. I'm a little girl -- and we make love together!")
3. In a cruel twist of much-needed irony, Nicole Kidman plays Maverick's soon-to-be ex-wife. ("Take me to bed ... or lose half your assets" becomes the new catchphrase.)
2. Meg Ryan, widow of the late, great "Goose," returns as the manager of the Navy base's bar/beach volleyball court. Motto: No shirt, no shoes, no problem.
1. Stunning revelation: The young pilot, with whom he is romantically attached, is actually his secret love-child with "Charlie."
You really are unsafe, Maverick!

I loved Top Gun. It was romantic when Mav and Charlie got together and it brought tears to my eyes when Goose died. Hell, it still does. A sequeal to Top Gun would be awesome. They should have the lead be Maverick's son. A continuation of the tradition displayed in Top Gun. Maverick was following in his father's footsteps. Now, 20+ years later why not Maverick's son? It makes sense. Throw in a female co-lead who is being harassed because she is a female pilot. Mav's son has interest in her. Somewhat like the first but 20 years later.

They'd have to find a new place to film the sequel's "sleazy bar scene" - the Kansas City BBQ in San Diego burned down recently. :(

"Slider....you stink!"
Yeah, you've got:
Maverick, Goose
Iceman, Slider
Cougar, Merlin
Viper, Jester
Wolfman, Hollywood
In fact, it's Wolfman and Hollywood who give the most homoerotic line in the movie, albeit in jest:
"This gives me a hard-on."
"Don't tease me."

Maybe the Ferris Bueller sequel could be titled "Ferris Bueller gets a vasectomy". Plot could be, after having 4 kids just like him he doesn't want anymore".

That's for certain- Johnny Ringo was THE perfect villain. We watch Tombstone practically every time we come across it flipping through the channels.

I just saw Tombstone again this weekend. Kilmer was AWESOME as Doc Holiday in that movie. Michael Beihn (another of my favorite 80s actors) was good as his nemesis Johnny Ringo.
Posted by: Bassnote | July 24, 2008 at 12:18 AM
I think Val Kilmer's best performance was definitely in Tombstone.. I'll be your huckleberry! He was fantastic.
I agree with Bassnote, Top Gun was insipid at best. I never understood why people went nuts about it. I don't feel the need for a sequel. Ya know?

I am so over these movie "stars" and sports figures. They make me puke. The funny thing is, the movie stars depict the common folk (like us) dealing with life, and then they act as though they are waaaaaaaaaaaay above us common folk. But, the great equalizer - death, always comes now, doesn't it? They are the same as us so I wish the fans would quit treating them like they walk on water. I hate seeing women scream like idiots when watching their "rock stars". That is so incredibly demeaning.
But, all that to say, they will do anything for our money, so if it gets them money, it will be done.

Wasn't that Tim Robbins? And it was Merlin as Mav's R.O. in the big air battle at the end
Posted by: Craig | July 23, 2008 at 07:00 AM
Merlin, right?

what was the call sign of cougars "rear"?

SLIDER!
Posted by: Sherrie | July 22, 2008 at 11:27 PM
Quick ... name Rossovich's call-sign!
Posted by: Spears | July 22, 2008 at 11:11 PM
Glad to see someone mentioned The Salton Sea. That is a very good movie, very under appreciated.
Posted by: Dave | July 22, 2008 at 11:00 PM
When Top Gun played at the movie theater I worked at, all of the concession stand girls made a chart showing when the volleyball scene took place for each showing of the film. We would dutifully take a break at the given time, and we never grew tired of that scene. Rick Rossovich was my favorite, but I suspect that the volleyball scene wouldn't be quite the same 20+ years on.
Posted by: Sherrie | July 22, 2008 at 10:23 PM
methinks miguel and steve protest too much about the volleyball scene in top gun.
just sayin.'
Posted by: Tonianne | July 22, 2008 at 10:12 PM
Top Gun as a musical. Well, that would at least be easy to do with the volleyball scene.
Posted by: Spears | July 22, 2008 at 09:58 PM
Well I guess this is better news than hearing it is being turned in to a Broadway musicial.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was fabulous!
Posted by: 80sfan | July 22, 2008 at 09:37 PM
"Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" was a lot of fun.
But (and I may be in the minority on this) for my money... "The Salton Sea" is where it's at. I loved the hell out of that.

the missing was indeed a great film and even though kilmer had a small role in it he did the role very well.
now to this, why the obsession with making sequels 20 or more years after the original? i could understand it if you did something like "valley girl" and showed what happened to the charecters after all that time but only if it was done correctly. too often they just want to cash in on the name and have subpar acting, writing, etc. i say leave a classic alone unless you definately can improve upon it.

This idea has "Direct To Video" written all over it...
Posted by: Brad | July 22, 2008 at 05:56 PM
Spearsy, how old do you think Miley Cyrus is?!?
How about having Maverick and IceMan as a couple with an adopted child they are teaching to fly:

Posted by: Big Tex | July 22, 2008 at 05:44 PM
Estelle Getty was going to be Maverick's mom. And she was going to show him how to fly jets.
Posted by: Neil | July 22, 2008 at 05:13 PM
Was Estelle Getty supposed to be in Top Gun 2? Is the movie off now?
Posted by: Confused | July 22, 2008 at 03:25 PM
Estelle Getty, the diminutive actress who spent 40 years struggling for success before landing a role of a lifetime in 1985 as the sarcastic octogenarian Sophia on TV's "The Golden Girls," has died. She was 84.

I love Top Gun, but would be incredibly wary of a sequel. Might be Loggins' excuse to finally get back into more rock type music, though.
Posted by: John Hays | July 22, 2008 at 02:41 PM
C'mon, weren't you all just thrilled to see Kilmer's Batman this weekend as all the cable networks ran everything ever Bat-related? His chemistry with Nicole Kidman was just scintillating *eyeroll*
Posted by: Michelle | July 22, 2008 at 02:38 PM
I sign after you Bassnote.Piece of crap indeed. But you all know my oppinion about Top Gun for a while.
Posted by: Miguel | July 22, 2008 at 01:42 PM
yea Bassnote sigh me up as a "Top Gun" hater as well. Please no sequel. Tom Cruise stopped acting a long long time ago.
Posted by: ughh | July 22, 2008 at 01:38 PM
"The Saint" was a great performance? That was a DOG.
I happen to like puppies, sunny days by the lake, and Ice cream sundaes, but "Top Gun" is still a piece of crap.
Posted by: Bassnote | July 22, 2008 at 01:35 PM
I got the need for speed! Whoo Hoo, make two more!
Posted by: Viper | July 22, 2008 at 01:34 PM
Val was in "The Missing" and "Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang". Those were good.
Posted by: Walter Cox | July 22, 2008 at 01:34 PM
Jon is scaring me with his Ferris Bueller sequel talk!
What would happen? Ferris & Cameron ditch work to stay home & look at internet porn only to discover Ferris' sister Jeanie has her own site?
Posted by: lauriec | July 22, 2008 at 01:24 PM
Bassnote - what planet are you from? Who hated Top Gun - seriously!? That movie had something for everyone. I'd hate to hear what you think of puppies, sunny days by the lake, and ice cream sundaes!
Posted by: Murdoughnut | July 22, 2008 at 01:18 PM
Oh, yeah, and I liked Kilmer in "Deja Vu".
Posted by: Jon | July 22, 2008 at 01:17 PM
"Ferris Bueller's Day Off" was in the theater at the same time. Please, Matt Broderick, let us not learn you're thinking of a sequel to that classic. Ugh! Ferris Bueller's Retirement" anyone?
Posted by: Jon | July 22, 2008 at 01:15 PM
The only thing that could save this is Rick Rossovich. Topless.
Posted by: lauriec | July 22, 2008 at 01:07 PM
I still remember girls were screaming in the theater when they had the volley ball scene. I did like the movie and actually would like to see a sequel. Does this mean they will make an "Iron Eagle 5"? I always considered "Iron Eagle" the poor man's version of "Top Gun". Although I did go to highschool with Jason Gedrick, the finest of all our alumni.
Posted by: Neil | July 22, 2008 at 12:54 PM
Oh,man "Wonderland" was not that bad.Now "The Saint",that was a dog.We could be arguing here all day.
The "Real Genious" sequel, that would be something special for sure.
Posted by: Miguel | July 22, 2008 at 12:11 PM
Kilmer's great as the Sherpa. But "Wonderland" was a dog.
"The Saint" was his last great performance. Before that, it'd be "Tombstone."
Don't get me wrong. I love Kilmer, and I'd welcome his return to a hit movie.
Too bad that "Real Genius" sequel never got off the ground.
Posted by: Spears | July 22, 2008 at 11:58 AM
I really don`t know what to say about this.
What song will they use for the volleyball scene, middle age version? I don`t think Kenny Loggins will be in the mood to play with the boys again,so maybe a Clay Aiken tune?
Val Kilmer hasn`t made a decent movie in the last 10 years? "Kiss,Kiss,Bang,Bang" dude."Wonderland" and what about his appearance in Entourage as "The Sherpa"? (wow,it seems like i`m a huge Val Kilmer fan after this, but not true).
Posted by: Miguel | July 22, 2008 at 11:48 AM
I hated the first one, do we really need another? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Bassnote | July 22, 2008 at 10:58 AM
In a mock dogfight over the Mojave Desert, a full-of-himself fighter jock (played brilliantly by Gilbert Gottfried) sprays Mav's plane with water, eliciting first a Cruisean smile, then, once on the ground, a self-indulgent admonotion that the offending pilot is "a real jerk."
