Rock you like a ... well, you know
Welcome to hurricane season in Florida, where those of us who enjoy every Christmas in balmy 70-degree weather suddenly get a reversed dose of karma from June through November each year.
This weekend, all eyes are on Tropical Storm Fay, which is on a path to come through or near Tampa Bay by Tuesday night. Threatening to grow to hurricane strength any day now, Fay has us all running out to buy bottled water, plywood and beer, of course. Don't worry, the Spears Lair will survive just fine.
But every storm needs a soundtrack. Help us add songs to today's playlist...
'80s SONGS FOR HURRICANE SEASON:
- "Where Were You Hiding When The Storm Broke?" (The Alarm)
- "Rock You Like A Hurricane" (Scorpions)
- "The Storm" (Big Country)
- "Like A Hurricane" (Roxy Music)
- "Dose Of Thunder" (The Replacements)
- "Windpower" (Thomas Dolby)
- "Storm Front" (Billy Joel)

Relive the music, movies and culture of the greatest decade ever with Times online editor Steve Spears. A teen during the decade, Steve is obsessed with everything from Duran Duran to Journey, John Hughes to John Cusack, and parachute pants to Reaganomics.
E-mail Steve Spears:

How about "Rain in the Summertime," another tune by The Alarm?
Hope the - dare I say classic? - Spears Lair and everyone else down there makes it through the storm okay.

We left Tampa almost two years ago--and hurricane season serves as a potent reminder of at least one thing I don't miss. Seriously, I hope you all stay safe. Hunker down people, hunker down. (sorry, must have had a flashback to 2005)

Turns out the Spears Lair is in an evacuation zone, but we'll see what happens as the night goes on.
I'm stuck working the night shift tonight, and my only job is to watch the storm, so I'll know first how things are going.

Since there was just a PC podcast how about a few songs from him...
'The Roof Is Leaking'
'Thunder and Lightning'
'I Wish It Would Rain Down'

I'm not liking the path of that storm, crossing near my old stomping grounds like they say.
Spearsy, stay high (elevation-wise, that other thing is your choice), stay dry and get the hell out if you really want to be safe.
Same for all you Stuck in the 80's fans in Fay's path.
Hurricanes ain't no fun....

May the power to your fridge at least stay on, and I hope the Spears Lair is above the first floor.
I'm over a hundred miles inland from where Katrina hit shore, and I still get a little antsy when I see 'canes in the Gulf.
In case of the worst, I love you, big guy. But in a platonic way, not the way Daly seems to love and idolize you.

You can always go with "Hurricane Party" by either Paul Sanchez or Cowboy Mouth. It was written about a hurricane in the 80s.

Surely everyone didn't forget the greatness that is (was) Oran "Juice" Jones: "The Rain"?
After all, the 80's without him is like corn flakes without the milk. This is his world and we're all just squirrels trying to get a nut.
Words as true today as they were in 1986.

Robin in the rain
Such a saucy fellow
Robin in the rain
Mind your boots of yellow
Digging in the garden with your long, strong beak,
La La La La La La La La, La La La
I forgot the next line

When the rain comes
They run and hide their heads
They might as well be dead
When the rain comes

Bassnote, your 7 year old will be happy then if they follow the Scranton set list. Dont Stop Believin' was actually played very early in the night. And Any Way you want it was toward the back end.
Tonianne, think you are going to be about 67% happy. Don't remember Still They Ride, but the other two were in there.
Definitely a good show, Cheap Trick definitely was a good warmup for Heart. But with Heart all I have to say is WOW. Ann Wilson was definitely on her game. And the thing I was shocked about most was that considering they were the creamy center in the Oreo cookie of a show, they came back for an encore. Didn't think they would do that with having to change the stage and everything to get Journey on, but they did and it was very well received.
Journey was very good. Arnel sounds very close to Steve Perry when he's singing, and is very energetic on stage. And the rest of the band still have the harmonys going. Very good set list, most of the hits were there but with the new album out I guess some of the hits had to be cut. Definitely would recommend the show and would probably go to see each band again if they were to perform by themselves in a smaller venue.

I'll be seeing the Journey/ Heart/ Cheap Trick show on the Chicago stop. I'll be taking my 7 & 8 year old daughters (and my wife). We are all looking forward to it. The 7 year old really wants to hear "Any Way You Want It" and "Don't Stop Believin'."

The move will be on Wednesday, it got pushed back a little. Thank you for the good thought though, Tonianne.

Bassnote, that was just WRONG!
What a shame Missy Elliot wasn't big in the 80s.

Here's one that will make everyone cringe:
Blame It On The Rain - Milli Vanilli

You forgot the band Hurricane, fronted by current Foreigner lead singer Kelly Hansen. They that self-titled song, and they just rereleased all of their old CDs.

After All These Years was good, but the others were when the crowd rested their feet and sat down.
I was really looking forward to Girl Can't Help It but no dice. All in all, it was a GREAT show and we had a nice late summer night of 64 degrees and no rain up on the mountain.
My buddy is a huge Journey fan (3 shows) said that he is shocked that Pineada was saw good.

Bless you for putting a song by The Alarm first! How I love Mike Peters and the boys, and their jangly guitars.
Posted by: Sherrie | August 17, 2008 at 06:46 PM
Sparky -- Really? I like the new songs they play in concert. "After All These Years" is great. "Never Walk Away" sounds like late 80s Journey. Good stuff.
Thankfully, I wasn't subjected to "Who's Crying Now" during their show here. If I never hear that song again, that's fine by me.

Run for Your Life - Sammy Hagar
Spears, by the way say the Cheap Trick, Heart and Journey show last night. All three were great. First time I saw the three bands.
I got to say Arnel put on a heck of a show and he sounded great. Not too keen on the new stuff though. It was ok not great. But I would definitely go see them again.

We really won't know anything definite (and I use that term loosely when talking about a hurricane track) until that thing gets past Cuba in the next 12-18 hours. *knock on wood for mojo purposes*
Like TP says -- the waiting is the hardest part.

Aw, crap, the latest forecast on the storm has it coming right at us here in Tampa Bay.
Don't be surprised if this means no podcast this week, depending on how badly things go for us.
