Whole lotta AC/DC on the way
The good news is that AC/DC has finally booked a Tampa gig on their upcoming world tour. (It's Dec. 21 at the St. Pete Times Forum. The better news? Chances are that no matter how good or bad their new album Black Ice is, the concert will basically be a greatest-hits show.
Word out there on the fan blogs is that concertgoers should expect one or two new songs and then a slew of the classics. Here's the set list from their last world tour back in 2001, according to Australia's Undercover.com Web site:
- You Shook Me All Night Long (from Back In Black, 1980)
- Stiff Upper Lip (from Stiff Upper Lip, 2000)
- Shot Down in Flames (from Highway To Hell, 1979)

AC/DC added more tickets and I finally got some!! Merry Christmas/Happy Birthday to me I will be seeing them in Nashville on January 31st with my husband. WOOHOO! Despite not logging on until three hours after the tickets went on sale, I managed to get some really good seats!

Thou shalt not criticize AC/DC...

they are to be in tulsa on jan 26th from what i hear. it might be a battle with the wife but i intend to go even though i can't believe how high the tickets are. maybe i can win some from kmod. or else get some overtime to pay for them. hmmmmm. i will say that i won't pay prices like that a 2nd time. once only and only for a select few bands.

AC/DC has never really been my cup o' tea, but I won't begrudge anyone their excitement.
I do think it's funny that AC/DC, of all groups, just signed an exclusivity deal with Wal-Mart for their new album. Guess I figured Springsteen would beat them to it...

I agree with Chase. I ALWAYS support local bands. And when they get famous, & ticket prices go up, I network to get my name on the >Guest List< with a plus 1 (for Joe).

I don't begrudge them the price they can get away with charging for tickets, but I also won't pay it no matter how much I want to see them. I just don't have that kind of disposable income.

Knickers in a twist or not, it's still my money, and it won't go to support something I feel is overpriced, it's a personal choice. You're correct, they could probably charge $229 a ticket (cough, cough, The Police) and sell out ... but I don't see how scalping fans is a way to go.
Whichever, I refused to pay scalpers prices to see the Red Sox in the World Series, too.

Chase,
I heartily endorse your advice to support local acts at events where the beer costs more than the ticket, but let's not be to harsh on AC/DC and their ilk.
Think of bands as farmers. New bands are busy sowing their seeds (and to extend the metaphor, more than a few 'wild oats'), and they just want to get as much of their stuff in the ground as they can. They tour often, and aren't too concerned with their "price point".
AC/DC and other established bands are harvesting their crops, reaping the benefits of decades playing "seed sowing" venues. So don't begrudge them the free-market price. In fact, the long line of instantly sold out shows would indicate they could charge a lot more and still fill every seat.
My bottom line: support your local $6 dollar "young farmer" bands, but know that each of them hopes to someday return behind the wheel of a $93 per ticket combine harvester. Don't get your knickers in a twist if their dreams come true.

i for one hope they do more than one or two new tunes, i just hate how classic bands these days only do greatest hit tours, even with a new cd to promote. the only way to make the new songs, greatest hits, is to play them and give them exposure. ac/dc has never struck me as the type of band that would bow down to the times, hence, they haven't toured in all these years since the last cd came out. i've heard two of the new songs, and they sound like classic ac/dc. as much as i love their catalog, i want some new tunes. nostalgia is a word i'm not too fond of. if you must play all these classics, play longer and throw five or so new ones into the mix. but dont pull a rush, and play them all in a row.

Just wait 'till you see the ticket prices.
Wouldn't it be great if Tampa Bay was the market that said, 'no thanks' and let them play to a half-empty arena?
Won't happen, fools will fork over $90+ per ticket and then gladly give Ticketbastard $10 "processing fees" plus $7 "convenience fees" and then pay an extra $2.50 to print them out ON THEIR OWN PRINTERS, and the show will sell out in 30 minutes.
sigh.
Go see a local act, support a local band, it'll cost you $6, you'll have fun, and you can meet the band after the show.
