Crash Davis loves the Tampa Bay Rays
No worries that Kevin Costner will ever star in a musical remake of Bull Durham or Field of Dreams. Because as a singer, Costner makes for a really great actor.
Costner and his band Modern West have just recorded a song for the Tampa Bay Rays to celebrate their AL East division title.
Called It's All Up To You, the song sounds like a typical honky-tonk rocker and features lyrics that begin, "You got to swing for the fence. Give a hundred percent. Dust yourself off. Get up and do it again."
Click here to listen to the complete song. Modern West and Costner played a live show in St. Petersburg back in November 2007 when the Rays unveiled their redesigned uniforms.
TOP 5 BASEBALL MOVIES LINES FROM KEVIN COSTNER:
5. "Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic." (Bull Durham)
4. "I can't think of a better reason not to be a Yankee." (For Love of the Game)
3. "God, I always said I would never bother you about baseball, lord knows you have bigger things to worry about. But if you could make this pain in my shoulder stop for ten minutes, I would really appreciate it." (For Love of the Game)
2. "Well, #$%& this #$%&ing game!" (Bull Durham)
1. "Dad ... you wanna have a catch?" (Field of Dreams)

i was talking more about critics and bandwagon jumpers. there are a lot of people who will think and do exactly as the media says, can you explain the popularity of nirvana. i mean c'mon, they made a few cool tunes, but a genius, cobain isnt. now i'll give you, he isn't great with accents. although i liked robin hood, it would go in and out. but i cant imagine anyone elsem during that era, who could have played that role. the only person i think could have is mel gibson. costner does the everyman role with ease. around the time of field of dreams, someone said he was our generations gary cooper. i think thats a pretty fair accessment.

Bassnote beat it to me on Sean's page, but we here in Chicago got an amazing Eddie Vedder song to celebrate the Cubs, so I think we have a one-up. I love Bull Durham and Field Of Dreams, but I'd rather have Eddie singing for my team. At least, it's better than Jim Belushi.
And Go Cubs Go being cheesy? I tear up every time I hear it. Maybe it's a Chicago thing.

I love Dances With Wolves, Field of Dreams, Tin Cup, and perhaps a few others, and like several more. I understand the voice criticism, but I don't mind it, it's just who he is. I don't know that it's so much a lack of acting ability as much as it is simply his natural way of speaking.

CHAD,
I haven't enjoyed Costner since I first saw him. Has nothing to do with jealousy, i assure you, and everything to do with a perceived lack of vocal fluctuation, which leads to flat, leaden performance.

Not that you need me to Marissa, but I will back you up on this one. Costner is a one note pony and is extremely over-rated. I am not saying he is horrible, in fact I have quite enjoyed quite a number of his films, but generally in spite of him. He was the worst thing about The Untouchables, but I may be in the minority in enjoying his nuanced performance in Tin Cup. Don't even get me started on Dances With Wolves, that movie is darn near unwatchable. I think Lawrence Kasdan had the right idea for The Big Chill in regard to Costner, just saying.
Good to have you back, Marissa, I missed your plucky attitude and can-do spirit!
I must've missed the mocking of Tonianne as well...but considering the mocking I received for my "letter" on Reader Mailbag a few podcasts ago, it doesn't surprise me.
Chin up, sweetheart!

costner is a great actor. the fact that he seems to fly under the radar, just proves it. how many classic movies he's been a part of: the untouchables, no way out, bull durham, field of dreams, dances with wolves, jfk, a perfect world, open range, the upside of anger, etc etc. check out his summation in jfk, its nearly 20 minutes, its flawless, its impassioned. people i think like to attack kevin because he has so much power. still, to this day, even though he's not the box office draw he once was, is still a commanding actor. he makes it look effortless, hence why people dont think he's any good. even recently, he's made some interesting choices. check out, the upside of anger and mr. brooks, they are both excellent pictures.

Did Sean mock you Tonianne? I didn't catch that!

I have no issue being the odd man out. It seems to suit me as of late.

Why...so Sean can mock me for being emotional in yet another podcast?
Not taking the bait this time, John.
Wouldn't be prudent.

I want to see if Tonianne gives you as hard a time as she gave me for throwing out that Field of Dreams line!

I don't know if Kevin Costner's song can be as bad as "Go Cubs Go". That song is really cheesy, even for 80's standards. I have to say if the Sox win tonight I am going to be rooting against your Rays. I actually went to several Rays games, and I really appreciate the low ticket prices and friendly atmosphere, but does not compare to a Cubs or Sox game.

I aspire to have my line delivery improve to the point where it's only monotone.

'Riss,
You know I'm not one to shy away from a chance to deflate a celebrity windbag, but Costner's got the acting chops to back up his "Movie Star" business cards.
I don't always like his politics, and his singing barely makes for palatable karaoke, but he's a better-than-just-good actor.

He's great if you're a fan of monotone delivery. Love the movies he's made. I just think he's sorta bland.

Not a great actor? (Panic attack!)
He's great in Bull Durham, No Way Out, Field of Dreams, Dances with Wolves!
Posted by: Spears | September 30, 2008 at 03:19 PM
Well, I never considered Costner a great actor. Now, I don't consider him a great singer. Stick with producing, Kevin. Just sayin'
