'Name is Run my son ... Number one for fun'
This is a big one: If all goes according to plan, Rev. Run (a.k.a. Joseph Simmons) from Run-DMC will be this week's guest on the Stuck in the '80s podcast.
Run is coming through the Tampa Bay area on Monday, Sept. 29, for a book-signing appearance at the Borders Book Store at 909 N Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa. According to Borders, Run will take a few questions, sign his new book -- Take Back Your Family: A Challenge to America's Parents -- and pose for photos. The event begins at 7 p.m.
But on Friday, we're hoping to chat with Run on the podcast. Among the first things out of our gaping mouths: Congrats on this week's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nomination!
With so many things to ask one of the pioneers of hip-hop, it's going to be tough to prioritize questions. So please let me know what burning questions YOU would ask Rev. Run. And then cross your fingers while I await final confirmation.

Relive the music, movies and culture of the greatest decade ever with Times online editor Steve Spears. A teen during the decade, Steve is obsessed with everything from Duran Duran to Journey, John Hughes to John Cusack, and parachute pants to Reaganomics.
E-mail Steve Spears:

You guys hate rap. You have basically straight up said so. And even if that is an overstatement, you never mention it. I have been through about 60 podcasts so far (but very few posts) and no LL Cool J, no Breakin' or Beat Street podcast, no Whodini, UTFO, you dissed Sugar Hill Gang etc etc. Now, if I just haven't gotten to it yet, then I apologize. I believe spears has come right out and said he hates it all. I hate rap and hip hop NOW, but Run-DMC are legendary in my book, and WAY before Aerosmith. I would love to see them get the respect they deserve on this interview. Good luck and make me proud!

Steve,
I say you do a solo cast expounding on the myths behind Spears/Daly! That's entertaining stuff!

Even though Run and DMC did some stuff in the 90s, they kind of went their separate ways after blowing up in the mid to late 80s. I was wondering if there were major directional differences or issues within the group that caused them to go their own ways.
Also what's his fondest memory or two of Jam Master Jay?
Thanks.

Those are a couple good ones, John.
FYI -- The interview has been postponed until next week. But it's still on.
Not sure if we'll get a podcast done this week or not.

How would Jam-Master Jay feel about being nominated into the Hall of Fame?
What current group would be ideal to team up with Run-DMC as they did with Aerosmith?

Whose reality show contains less actual reality, his or Gene Simmons?

They did some classic '80s stuff, no doubt. But is their collaboration with Aerosmith, which I enjoyed back then, to blame for all the new-rock/rap hybrid crap like Limp Bizkit which came along later?

more on the 'Smith video ... ask him how that impacted the future of both dinosaur band Aerosmith and rap music, seems like it did great things for both, perfect synergy ... without that landmark video, would either be where they are today? Would the 'Smith have faded away (a la Blue Oyster Cult, playing the Seminole Casino next month) and would rap have remained a fringe "urban" bit without suburban teenage dollars at the record store ...
Did they know they were creating the future when they teamed up?

How does he feel about knowing that two nerdy, white girls rapped "You Talk Too Much" all the time? (we really thought we were cool) Did he know, at that time, that RUN DMC was reaching white kids too?

WOW! What a great interview Steve! Hmmm... what to ask, what to ask?

How did you hook up with Aerosmith?
Was "My Adidas" recorded before you ever had an endorsement deal with them?
