'Raising Hell' with the Hall of Fame
Run-DMC and Metallica are the latest '80s acts to win nominations for the 2009 class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, according to the latest news reports.
Other artists nominated include Bobby Womack, Jeff Beck, R&B band Chic, Wanda Jackson, Little Anthony and the Imperials, The Stooges and the California funk band War.
Not to take anything away from the latest nominees, but this means another year goes by without honoring Journey, Heart, Duran Duran and Kiss. What's going on up there in Cleveland anyway?

Relive the music, movies and culture of the greatest decade ever with Times online editor Steve Spears. A teen during the decade, Steve is obsessed with everything from Duran Duran to Journey, John Hughes to John Cusack, and parachute pants to Reaganomics.
E-mail Steve Spears:

Hall of Fame should ellect Tommy James & The Shondells, 23 Gold Singles, 9 platium LP'S. Should be a lock for the Hall Of Fame.

Stevie Ray Vaughan wasn't nominated this year, either. Run-DMC should be voted in because "I'm the king of rock, there is none higher. Sucker MCs should call me sire!" Certainly the king of rock should be in the HoF.
I'm actually OK with Chic because Nile Rodgers will finally get the props he deserves.
I visited the HoF last year. It is as big a disappointment as the nominating process. The only good part was a Clash exhibit that featured the actual bass guitar that was smashed on the cover of London Calling. I'd post a picture, but, of course, the HoF doesn't allow photography.
If you read between the lines of the info on the HoF website, you see that the nominations come from aging, baby boomer record executives from the east coast. That explains a lot.

Cylon, it's truly the most awesome class of all time. Love the G.I. Joe reference......."All-American Hero...fighting Cobra..." man that takes me back.

Todd Rundgren should be in already. He's so much more than "Bang The Drum All Day" or "Hello It's Me". A true musician, songwriter, singer, not to mention his work with Meatloaf, Cheap Trick and The Psychedelic Furs, etc.

Justifications:
Without Run-DMC and Aerosmith, there would be no rock/rap fusion. We'll give them a mulligan on Limp Bizkit. Also, they're the first rap act to get MTV, and thereby mainstream, airplay, paving the way for modern radio. Ok, that's two mulligans. Did those rope chains start the whole bling thing?
Jeff Beck: Yardbirds, work on other artists albums, solo work.
Metallica: just good.
Chic: The late Bernard Edwards and Nile Rogers did tons of producing other notable artists, including some of the bands mentioned in this thread, and Tony Thompson was a noted drummer. Were they all good separately? Yes. Together? Not so much.

Thanks for the history of HOF. Now I know and knowing is half the battle. Sorry, I just had to reference G.I. Joe General MacArthur.
Al, your class sounds interesting.

General MacArthur,
The reason why the HOF is in Cleveland is because of the "King of the Moondogs", Mr. Alan Freed. You're correct, he was a DJ who popularized the rock n roll revolution in the mid to late 50's. Freed eventually moved to NYC. Unfortunately, Mr. Freed was implicated in the Payola Scandals of the time (when DJ's were paid under the table to play certain songs) and the government got him like Al Capone: on income tax fraud.
Freed died in 1965 penniless, in his forties.
I'm taking a history of music course right now on the '50's...it's hands down the best class I've had in years. We talk rock n roll, we watch rock n roll, and we listen to rock n roll.

and how about some love for some great prog bands like King Crimson, Yes, and Emerson, Lake, and Palmer??
Posted by: Douglas Arthur | September 23, 2008 at 09:18 PM
let us not forget that the enduring power of Devo continues to go unrecognized. As for the Cleveland thing...I think it has to do with a DJ there who broke with format and began playing it regularly, and is credited by some with popularizing the phrase Rock N Roll in the first place.

Maybe we should open up debate on that 80's act that was inducted last year..........I think it was a BORDERLINE nomination......perhaps her MUSIQ was not nomination material....

Who exactly nominates these bands?
Posted by: Melissa | September 23, 2008 at 08:07 PM
Kiss should go in before Metallica. Without Kiss there would be no Metallica. And Kiss is still a viable band.
Posted by: sparky | September 23, 2008 at 07:03 PM
other bands/singers that should be in the hall: kiss, cheap trick, the monkees, rush, journey, reo speedwagon, heart, duran duran, def leppard, rick springfield, styx, ted nugent, foreigner, kansas, hall and oates, genesis, yes, the doobie bros., i could go on and on. its a travesty.

On their iPods. ;-)

Sampling "Walk This Way" qualifies RUN DMC as rock!!?
And dressing like a groupie qualifies Madonna?
So, by that measure, when are Spearsy and Sean gonna be inducted?
They play rock, and write about it, which is more than can be
said of Madonna.

By "B-Sharps," I am reminded by the episode of Simpsons where Homer forms a group with Apu, Principal Skinner, and Barney. I hope that is who Spears is referring.
I am still confused by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Why exactly is it in Cleveland because Rock and Roll does not inspire thoughts of Ohio? At least the County Music Hall of Fame is in Nashville, TN which is the home of country music.
Posted by: Cylon | September 23, 2008 at 06:27 PM
The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame wouldn't know what rock and roll was if it bit it in the a##. I could list dozens of bands that are more deserving than Madonna or Metallica. The RnRHOF truly jumped the shark last year. Time to call a wrecking ball.

Every year that Heart is not honored just pisses me off more.
Posted by: 80sfan | September 23, 2008 at 05:12 PM
I think it all depends on if Jann likes you or not.
Posted by: Joe | September 23, 2008 at 05:04 PM
Steve, I think the bands you named could care less for the nomination as it wasn't ever about glory but about Rock and Roll.
Disco is dead and I hope it stays that way. The last of the 70's was just lame except for those acts that kept rockin'.
Posted by: Deena | September 23, 2008 at 04:44 PM
And unlike Madonna, I think Iggy still comes here to visit on a semi-regular basis.
Posted by: Vegasgirlfriend | September 23, 2008 at 04:32 PM
Maybe this year the HoF will finally give the nod to Iggy and the Stooges. Then I can set aside my righteous indignation about their exclusion...
...and replace it with indignation that they entered the HoF behind Madonna!

Are you thinking of those master's of barbershop, the Be Sharps?
Or this band ...

The Hall of Fame has nothing to do with rock anymore. They oughta just change the name. It's more shameless than the Grammy Awards.
I keep waiting for the "B-Sharps" to be nominated for the hall.

Chic? As in "The Freak?"
Oh, fer cryin' .... I thought it was the Rock and Roll hall, not the Disco Hall of Shame!
