Remakes & sequels: 'Now is the season of evil'
Vigo the Carpathian - most evil-looking dude of the '80s? Or just a man very upset that his legacy in Ghostbusters 2 is about to be upstaged by the sequel 20 years later? You be the judge.
The good news is that a new Ghostbusters installment will probably include Bill Murray, who told a crowd at Fanastic Fest this week that he "would definitely be into doing another Ghostbusters movie, stating that the first 40 minutes of the original film is some of the best stuff he's been associated with and the whole shoot was an amazing amount of fun," according to Moviehole.com.
"He also went on to say that his enthusiasm for Ghostbusters was heightened after recording the voice of Peter Venkman for the video game over the summer," Moviehole.com says. "In fact, he said he found himself walking down the street singing the Ghostbusters theme song and then thought people walking around him were going to start yelling at him to 'get over yourself, Bill,' so he stopped ... But the enthusiasm was there."
Though Ghostbusters 3 seems like it's headed in the right direction, what about all the other '80s movies that are slated for remakes and sequels? That's the topic of this week's Stuck in the '80s podcast, featuring guest co-host Steve Persall, the film critic -- film genius dare I say? -- from the St. Petersburg Times.

I met Wilhelmm von Homburg in 1992 when he was trying to sell his truck on our radio station. He showed up at the station to meet a buyer and told everyone he was an actor and played a bad guy in Die Hard. I immediately recognized he was Vigo in GB2. He was a shell of the man he was just a few years earlier. So sad. However, he seemed to enjoy the attention we movie geeks gave him.

With Top Secret we have a couple of good laughs and that`s it.
I only listened to the podcast today.I think Judd Apatow may be a good idea to direct GhostBusters 3.It is true that he`s been over exposed in the latest years, but the man has some talent.I don´t agree with Persall when he mentions Judd Apatow is the new Ivan Reitman.Judd has much more talent than Ivan ever had.
And yes,Bill Murray should play Tripper in a possible Meatballs remake(in this case it would be sequel, right?).

Angie, I'm with you. I remember seeing Top Secret and being really unimpressed. It has its moments -- the cow outfit with the boots and the French underground spy named Deja Vu -- but that's about it.

I saw both Real Genius and Top Secret. I really disliked Top Secret, but totally loved (and still love) Real Genius. I remember watching Val Kilmer at the time and thinking that he was someone to watch out for.

As someone who's as close to being an insider as maybe any poster here, here's something Mr. Persall missed:
Today's junior Studio execs, the ones who receive the most material at the Studios and who pass projects up the chain, are are STUCK IN THE 80s.
They are us, in many respects. The best decade was where they were formed, and they seem to feel something is missing from movies today -- a love of movie movies. Movies were events that we all really looked forward to back then.
These plus or minus 40 execs are emerging, and overtaking, those older execs who prefer the indie, auteur feel of movies from the 70s. No, they didn't seek to remake the hits of their era; that would be anathema. But they did seek to make movies in that 70s spirit during the last 10 years.
And now our brothers in multi-Swatched arms are more than happy to remake or sequel-ize their favorite blockbusters rather than imitate them. (AND those titles do have a built in audience, as Persall alluded.)

MMMmmmm Ghostbusters.
That sounds like a good Halloween outfit!

Hey! I'm finally listening to the podcast. Love 'THE Persall'! It's always nice to have him on the podcast. He's no Sean, but then, who is?
I have to tell you to stop bashing THE WEIRD SCIENCE podcast. It's not the worst. It's not even close to awful. Sheesh!

While rehabbing from knee surgery this week I actually watched Meatballs for the first time in years, and I have to say that it stood up a lot better than I expected it to. The key to its success is Murray, obviously, but also the sweet and tender relationship he had onscreen with Rudy (Chris Makepeace). I think that is what set it above all the other teen comedies to come in the following decade. Haven't heard the 'cast yet...been watching my beloved Buffalo Bills go 4-0, but I'll get to it tonight or tomorrow! Looking forward to it!

Sorry about the double post, stupid internet...

I agree with Persall about Murray playing Morty in a Meatballs remake, he can't play him as the loser from the original. He should just be his original character of Tripper. Tripper should be running the camp, and it would give the movie a completely different dynamic.
I agree with you Steve about Judd Apatow, I am sick of his stuff already. All he's going to do is infuse Ghostbusters with potty humor.

BTW, I haven't seen Real Genius, Better Off Dead, OR Top Secret!

I love Bill Murray, and I love both Ghostbusters movies, so I have high expectations for a third. We'll see.

A remake of Meatballs? I'm sorry but I thought this movie was awful! It's been so repeated on cable lately.
