'The boozehounds return!'
Say what you like about "Weird Science," but it's easily one of the most quotable movies of the John Hughes era.
(Of course, it helps when you have friends like Sean Daly, who actually does wear a bra on his head from time to time. "For facial-muscular support," he swears.)
This week's Stuck in the 80s podcast will answer a lingering question: Is "Weird Science" a disappointing, goofball piece of comic trash ... or is it a guilty pleasure that celebrates a level of humor we've long since chosen to ignore, much to our own detriment?
Wait until Saturday for our well-researched and thoroughly reasonable arguments. In the meantime, help us devise a special Top 10 list for the podcast: Top 10 Memorable Quotes from Weird Science. Here are my favorites. No surprise, they're all from "Chet," who has the same haircut as me:
- "You're stewed, buttwad!"
- "The boozehounds return!"
- "He pukes, you die."
- "I'm gonna tell Mom and Dad everything. I'm even considering makin' up some s--t!"
- "How 'bout a nice greasy pork sandwich served in a dirty ashtray?"

E-mail Steve Spears:

Despite the fact i went to see it twice in theaters when it was out, I have to say it was a disappointment, ultimately, for me. It had some great, funny stuff, but I felt at the time that it failed to deliver on some of its great promise. I haven't seen it in probably 15 years or so, so my memories fade a bit. I just remembering having that "special feeling" for Kelly LeBrock, which is probably why I went to see it twice. I'd have to watch it again to give a more cogent analysis. I did like the Oingo Boingo title track, even if the band has disowned it.

"My nuts are half way up my ***, but other than that I'm fine!"
In the 80s I thought it was hilarious. After watching it recently, I have to say it didn't age well, and I it wasn't as funny.

Favorite Quote:
"Mom, i NEVER tossed off!"
Loved it then, Love it now.
It's totally funny. And what a gem of '80's fashions!

Definitely a guilty pleasure. Just pulled it out again recently and watched it on my iPod while working out (no, not all in one session!). As for favourite lines -- definitely gotta second the "My nuts..." line. Probably my #1. A close second would be "Well, Dino, I guess she just likes malaccas [sp?]".

Thought it was a decent movie. Has some really funny stuff and some really lame stuff. I hate the scene where Anthony Michael Hall gets drunk and turns into an old black guy. That scene makes me cringe. I pretty much like every scene with Chet. He really makes the movie for me....well and Kelly LeBrock didn't hurt either. When I see it on cable I will leave it on for a bit, then start to fip around.

I always enjoy watching this! From the great Oingo Boingo theme to Kelly LeBrock to Chet! By the way, no surprise that Bill Paxton isn't a fan, although I'd love to see a special edition dvd with "where are they now" on the characters. I'm thinking Chet would be a staunch Republican senator.

Can picture Sean wearing panties on his head!
Posted by: crash | September 05, 2008 at 11:57 AM
I don`t like this movie that much. One of the worst John Hughes movies. The best of it Oingo Boingo`s theme, and Kelly LeBrock`s body, obviously!
Another quote from Chet:"I wouldn`t give a squirt of piss for your a@@ right now."
Posted by: Miguel | September 05, 2008 at 12:00 PM
Guilty pleasure.
Interesting that three of Chet's best lines are in one scene. I always liked:
"That is not a joke. That is a severe behavioral disorder!"
Another great line from the bar scene:
"On the telephone?"

Well and there`s always the one we as teenagers would dream to hear:
"So,what would you little maniacs like to do first?"
Posted by: Miguel | September 05, 2008 at 12:05 PM
I'd have to go with Miguel on that one. That's one of my favorite quotes, too. And for me, "Weird Science" is a guilty pleasure.

Speaking of Chet/Bill Paxton, "Weird Science" was my first exposure to him as an actor. At the time, I just think he'd turn out to be such a good actor. He's definitely one of the pleasant surprises to come out of that movie.

My brother and I always use the the "how about a nice greasy pork sandwhich.." to try to induce vomit when the other was sick.
I think it worked once.
Posted by: DenverMatt | September 05, 2008 at 01:07 PM
Oops! That second sentence should read, "At the time, I just didn't think he'd turn out to be such a good actor."
Posted by: Jeff from Vegas | September 05, 2008 at 01:08 PM
First time I saw Bill Paxton was in NIGHT WARNING where he played "Crazy Eddie," and I thought, "This guy can really act!"
I couldn't even believe he was the same actor when I saw him in WEIRD SCIENCE.
We know "what happened to" Paxton, Hall, and Downey Jr., but what about the other kid(s)?

I thought it was a funnier geek movie than "Real Genius."
Posted by: Michelle | September 05, 2008 at 02:57 PM
Michelle,
"Weird Science" better than "Real Genius"? Perish the thought. RG will always be the geek movie of choice.
I'll forego my trademark philosophical manifesto and leave you with this:
"Weird Science" puts forth the notion that geeks can become cool. "Real Genius" is staked on the idea that geeks ARE cool.

Jeff, I just could never "buy" Val Kilmer as a geek. He was too pretty :D
Posted by: Michelle | September 05, 2008 at 04:46 PM
I have to agree it wasn't one of the best movies from that time period, but it has its moments. Crazy to think that, at that time, a 928 Porsche and a Ferrari Mondial were actually hot cars to have.

Wasn't there another "science" movie that came out right at the time this one did? I want to say it was called My Science Project. I guess it is safe to say this one wasn't as memorable.
Posted by: ARod | September 05, 2008 at 05:01 PM
Oh my! We just finished recording the Weird Science podcast, and I can say with total certainty it's the worst show we've done so far. Seriously. You'll demand your time back.
But at least I warned you.
Posted by: Spears | September 05, 2008 at 05:15 PM
haven't seen the movie in years - but splendid timing, Steve! it is on German tv tomorrow (although the horrible synchronized version, as always...)...
Posted by: Dennis | September 05, 2008 at 05:25 PM
How bad can it possibly be? Looking forward to it.
Posted by: ARod | September 05, 2008 at 05:49 PM
With a ringing endorsement like that, I can't wait to hear it! I love train wrecks! Did you mention Bill Paxton's 80s band Martini Ranch? Their debut album was produced by Mark Mothersbaugh! Yet another Devo connection!
Duty now!

Weird Science was a good fun movie that most people in their position would try - sex, power, popularity; especially since they were the losers in school at the beginning.

Why are my posts moderated? And if they are moderated, why aren't they posted after they are determined NOT to be spam? This is getting annoying....Now, I know why I don't make too many comments on blogs.

I have to agree with Jeff In Cuba about Real Genius. Love that movie.
Posted by: Bassnote | September 05, 2008 at 11:19 PM
screw this. twice i've tried to post and twice it will not go through. i get some error notice. anyway, it is not a guilty pleasure for me. i like the movie.
Posted by: don in tulsa | September 05, 2008 at 11:26 PM
Overall a disappointment because the stuff that IS funny just illustrates how bad the stuff that falls flat is. It seems like a very sloppy effort from everyone involved. Plus it wasn't helped by the fact that this is the film where Anthony Micheal Hall really started to take himself a little too seriously as a star, leading to the unwatchable "Johnny Be Good".

Sorry for the spam or error messages, gang. It's probably some Typepad glitch. It's nothing I'm doing.
Posted by: Spears | September 06, 2008 at 12:10 AM
yeah, mine did say typepad. anyway, weird science is a good movie not as bad as so many make it out to be in my opinion. i place the geek trifecta as:
1. real genius
2. weird science
3. my science project
if there are any others that i've momentarily forgotten, well i'm getting old so get off my back. i've added all 3 to my list of 80s movies i need to acquire. sometimes it's not just the movie, it's the memories that come with it.
Posted by: don in tulsa | September 06, 2008 at 12:22 AM
okay so i forgot revenge of the nerds 1 & 2. i'd change it to:
1. revenge of the nerds
2. real genius
3. weird science
4. my science project
4. revenge of the nerds 2: nerds in paradise

OK, spam update: If you're trying to use the "b-word" that rhymes with "witch," you're gonna get your comment blocked. Again, it's the software's automated block. What can I say, life's a ditch.

When riding in a car and a friend that is driving makes a dumb move I usually yell out, "He don't even have a license, Lisa!"

1. Real Genius
2. Revenge of the Nerds
3. Weird Science
4. Manhattan Project
5. My Science Project
