The right move? Keeping his pants on!
Pop quiz, hotshots: What penalty is Tom Cruise called for during All The Right Moves?
If you said "Unnecessary nudity" for his love scene with Lea Thompson, then you're absolutely correct.
It's true: Cruise didn't have to bare it all for that memorable scene, but he told the director it was more fair that way. (Just the same way I insist all the lovemaking scenes between me and Ione Skye are completely natural.) So for the first, and hopefully only time, the world got to see Tom Cruise's naughty bits.
That's just one of the morsels of trivia you'll get on this week's Stuck in the '80s podcast: Our salute to football movies of the '80s. (Also hidden deep inside Reader Mailbag: your suggestions for our list of John Hughes porn movie titles.)
Hopefully this week's show will make up for last week's debacle. We're still getting hate mail for our "Weird Science" podcast. My mom even wrote one.
"Dear Steve. You're not funny anymore. And the latest show SUCKS - even though I taught you never to use that word. Love, Mom. P.S. - Bring Funyuns to the family dinner tonight."
Click here to listen. Or click here to download all our shows for free via iTunes. Meanwhile, I'm off to the store for Funyuns ... and whatever else will get me out of Mom's doghouse.

Relive the music, movies and culture of the greatest decade ever with Times online editor Steve Spears. A teen during the decade, Steve is obsessed with everything from Duran Duran to Journey, John Hughes to John Cusack, and parachute pants to Reaganomics.
E-mail Steve Spears:

Hey Rob, I'm just south of you in Kankakee. I think I see the sun rising. The rain has been insane! It's times like this I wish I still used Aqua Net. OY!

Steve, since you're not entirely independent, would you ever consider "guest" podcasters to help out with a segment or two?
I would love to hunt down (not literally) John Hughes for you and get at least a "sound-byte" of him saying something about the 80's...
Secondly, this may seem personal, but do you make any money from your podcasts? I am assuming that you are listened to by tens of thousands of people (weekly), so have you profited off the show? If so, that would be awesome.
Lastly, Steve, have you ever been approached by a radio station; whether it is satellite, local, or syndicated about your show? I can't imagine that you haven't. You are a total pro on the show (along with Sean as well) and I think you could make a killing on the radio....That seems to be one industry that isn't necessarily taking a hit from all the downloaders out there.
Anyhow, great show and keep up the awesome podcasts...Sorry about all the posts for the past few days, but the rain in Chicago has been absolutely Biblical and all I can do is hang out online or watch TV....

another home run guys (oops, sorry wrong sport analogy). good or bad, im always entertained by the shows. ive seen all the movies mentioned. i pretty much agree with your accessments, except for everybodys all american. being a huge quaid fan, ive always liked this movie. although being from the same region as the movie is based, i might be biased. i havent seen most of these movies in a while, but i do own the best of times, so ive probably seen it more recently. its a funny movie, robin lets loose a couple of scenes. but in the movies defense, nobody really allowed or knew how to let robin williams genius flourish, until good morning vietnam.

The censor question - good one. A couple reasons. One, we're still offered through a general audience newspaper website, we're not independent. So we try to be a careful to avoid the really awful language, unless it's spoken by someone we're interviewing.
(And to be honest, during the Andrew Dice Clay podcast, I cut out some material of us because it was too raunchy.)
Also, I'd like to avoid the "explicit" label on iTunes.
I hold us to the standards of a late-night TV show or cable show. A few words here and there are fine, but that's about it.
LIKEWISE, I do edit the show for length and content. I try to keep things moving. Usually anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes of material ends up being cut during from the final show. Sometimes, it's just an awkward joke. Other times, it's an entire story or segment.

I was at "The Glen" just a couple years ago and the place was looking old. The padding on the chairs was probably 20 years old, but besides that, it seemed to still have some charm.
Steve, how come you have to censor your own podcasts? It is not like you play these on the radio. That is one of the reasons why I love to listen to podcasts, because people can let loose and say what they are really thinking...I've never understood why you guys bleep yourselves sometimes.

I have friends who were extras in Lucas. I couldn't do it because I had a full time job. The high school used was Glenbard West in Glen Ellyn, Illionois. The theater was just down the street from the high school, called The Glen. In fact the movie put some money into renovating the theater for use in the movie.

"Lucas" was on our list to discuss, but we were running very long. I'm not a big fan of the movie. Like "ET", I figure I was at the wrong age to appreciate it.
We actually trimmed about 20 minutes from the final version of this podcast. Jeff in Cuba's monologue was the last thing to get cut, but thankfully it's available on the blog.
Truth be told, we cut it because none of us could one-up Jeff in our response segment. And then we said something really, really risque that had to stay on the cutting room floor.

I cannot believe that you guys gave airtime to "Johnny B. Good", but give ZERO mention to Lucas. I don't know about you guys, but Lucas (although not a football movie unto itself) has some interesting football moments.
What do you guys have against Lucas? I can remember choking up at the end of that movie.
I actually have been to that same theater they all go to in the movie...It is located in Glen Ellyn, Illinois..

The Quarterback Princess... I wanted to be her!
BTW our high school has a female kicker. She does the kick offs and field goals. She always is a fantastic soccer player and does double practice.

I am only halfway through this podcast but I am loving it!
Good for you referring football, always need good volunteer willing to accept the abuse. I was at a game today that had to be called due to abusive parents and coachings towards the referee. There was a missed call but it was BEHIND the play, behind the referees, they did not see the hit but boy those parents went ballistic. They went after the referee AND the child and youth sports personnel. It was a sad day for military kids sports.

Steve and Sean, I swear to God...I LOVED your "Weird Sciencce" podcast...you two could sit there and recite the phone book and I would still find it hilarious! There is something about your chemistry when you are together that makes me listen to your podcast.
Besides, Weird Science is one of my Hughe's "Guilty Pleasures"...However, I would disagree with Sean about how he didn't like the "Road Warrior" scene....I thought that was one of the funniest scenes. I loved the part when one of them tears Gary out of the closet by punching a hole in the wall.
Keep it up guys and I am downloading your current podcast as I write this comment. I will listen to it on my ipod while I work on getting all the water out of my basement. We've had over 7 inches of rain where I live and it is just crazy nasty weather lately....
