Alex Cox is stuck in the ... '70s???

Alexcox Former Stuck in the '80s co-host and Seattle correspondent Cathy Wos had a brush with greatness this week: director Alex Cox! Here's her report:

"I just got back from a visit to our awesome local video store, Scarecrow Video, where there was a signing with the director Alex Cox! For those who don't know him, he directed Repo Man and one of my all-time favorite movies, Sid and Nancy. He was in town signing his new autobiography X Films: True Confessions of a Radical Filmmaker. Later in the evening he was screening his new film Searchers 2.0. (Click here to read more about it.)"

"Meeting Mr. Cox was quite a thrill for me. To top it off, he was super-nice, signed my DVD and let me take this pic. The picture might be a little blurry because my hands were shaking. I know, I'm a dork."

"I told Alex that he would be on the Stuck in the '80s site and he was very enthusiastic. However, he made it known that he will be forever Stuck in the '70s. As he pointed out, the '80s was the end of punk!"

Sean Daly is really a fairly shallow fan of music, isn't he?

Dr. Dim

Yes, the 80's were the technical end of punk rock. But, punk rock gave rise to so much good music that filled the 80's with such great noise.

Gang of Four, Black Flag, Suicidal Tendencies, The Minutemen, The Pixies, REM, X, Husker Du, Robyn Hitchcock, The Church, Caberet Voltaire, The Replacements, The Smiths...

I could keep going, but you get the idea. Not all the aforementioned bands were favorites of mine, but the all were important to the 80's "underground" music scene.

I think Steve would be willing to focus on this area more, if Sean would set aside his fear of indie music and his love for the absolute blight of the 80's music scene... Hair Bands!

Douglas Arthur

If I am not mistaken, I think he was also attached to direct the WATCHMEN for a time or two...now there is another podcast idea. The original comics were released in 1985-86, and were recently named one of the 100 greatest works of literature of the 20th century by Time magazine. Terry Gilliam was also slated to direct it at one time. For a long time it was considered a bit unfilmable due to its depth and length, but I think the success of Lord Of the Rings and Spiderman, made someone think about doing a rich, dense superhero movie.

Miguel

Oh,and always a reason to celebrate when we see Cathy and Gina appearances. They are in my heart,in the pericardial cavity to be more precise, right next to the visceral pericardium.

Miguel

The 80s was indeed the end of punk, that`s a bad detail in our beloved decade.

Did you know Alex Cox was attached for a long time to direct "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas"? I would have loved to watch his version on Hunter Thompson`s book.

Gina Vivinetto

I was wondering why Wos had "Love Kills' playing on her myspace profile.

Gina Vivinetto

Yay Wos!!

Also, I have to say, I saw an AC/DC concert flick (1996 in spain) in a giant arena, and with the stage setup and light show and all that, it is more like a Broadway show than a night at the local rock club, so I guess if people pay $100 a ticket for a Broadway show, then $100 is fine for a big rock and roll production for someone who really wants to go ... I probably wasn't taking into account the "Show" expense.

I LOVE Repo Man ... "The more you drive, the less intelligent you get"
