What's happenin' with the podcast, hot stuff?
Long Duk Dong wants to know: Assuming this week's Halloween audio commentary/podcast comes out somewhat entertaining, which '80s flick will Stuck in the '80s cover next? (Good news, Duckster ... I'm leaning toward your signature movie.)
There is a fairly big list of movies we haven't touched yet. But the key to doing a good commentary is picking a movie that most of us own on DVD. So here are some possible picks.
BREAKFAST CLUB: Sure, it was the subject of our very first podcast. But that only lasted about 10 minutes! We've been dying to go back and give it a more proper tribute. I honestly haven't watched it in full since the theater though.
THE GOONIES: Like Halloween, I haven't seen this flick yet in its entirety. Why not? I just wasn't into kiddie flicks at this point in my life. I just wanted to sneak into R-rated movies and see some forbidden sex.
STRIPES: Speaking of forbidden sex, this was the first movie I saw as a teen that had any significant amount of nudity. And yet, it's never been the subject of a podcast. (Trivia: We did play Stripes last night after Halloween, until Sean Daly had to be forcibly removed from the Spears Lair.)
SIXTEEN CANDLES: I believe this is the one remaining John Hughes teen movie we haven't discussed. Why? Because it's too hard to be funny about one of the funniest movies of the '80s. But surely every one of us owns this classic on DVD, right? I think this is our front-runner.
What other obvious picks are there for a DVD commentary?

Out of the choices above, I vote Stripes or Ghostbusters. I would wait for prom season for Sixteen Candles, and it would give you time Steve to get Gedde Watanabe in for an interview.
Has Top Gun ever been the sole subject of a Podcast? Some other suggestions:
Blues Brothers
Short Circuit
First Blood
War Games
Revenge of the Nerds
The Shining (the Halloween theme)
And cult favorites...
Blade Runner
Scanners

I think you have to see the Goonies. It is a great film with some classic lines. it also features a great song by Cyndi Lauper. Some of the stars go on to have even bigger careers.
Posted by: Cylon | October 06, 2008 at 05:43 PM
Lori, in this case it's a totally valid point! The film was made for kids, and kids enjoyed it and those who were those kids still do! Just sayin!

John Hays, this 'old' and 'young' crap has got to stop!
Posted by: Lori | October 06, 2008 at 04:04 PM
Too old? Dammit ...
Yeah, "kid screaming" about sums up Goonies for me
Posted by: chase | October 06, 2008 at 03:32 PM
I guess I'm too old, too. I hadn't seen Goonies when it came out and for many, many years after that. Some months ago, my wife and I stumbled upon Goonies. My wife had seen the movie when she was a child. She was thrilled. I tried to watch it, but there was way too much screaming. And kid screaming at that. It drove me crazy.
Sorry 80's nation, but I'll have to pass on Goonies.
But Steve wants a suggestion... how about This is Spinal Tap?
Posted by: Dr. Dim | October 06, 2008 at 01:46 PM
Chase, you're just too old! Goonies was a great movie! Much better than a ton of the kids movies out today! It had a very Stand By Me feel, which was another great movie.

Sixteen Candles! ... (gawd, Goonies was a horrible movie ... do not speak of it)
Posted by: chase | October 06, 2008 at 11:42 AM
How about St. Elmos fire???
Posted by: Linda | October 06, 2008 at 10:01 AM
Kind of like an 80s version of "Y Tu Mama Tambien."
But without the accents.

"Doing an audio commentary on an 80s porn movie? That's darn near brilliant, Miguel.
Sean might even say nay to drinking for that feat.
Posted by: Spears | October 05, 2008 at 08:00 PM"
Probably a good idea about the no drinking...we don't want you guys doing "shots" during the porn. That might be a bit....awkward. I know you and Sean have man-love for each other, but that would really take it to another level, I think.

How about "Pretty In Pink" (how could we forget DUCKY), and "Xanadu", the movie that ushered in the 80's. Olivia Newton John, post "Grease" and pre "Physical", on roller skates, sailing around to the music of ELO, and turning into an animated fish in part of it. Go for it!

Steve, "Adventures in Babysitting" is always on the $5.50 rack at Target.
John Hays! HOW? This calls for an intervention. STAT!
Posted by: Marissa | October 06, 2008 at 07:53 AM
how about "Fast Times At Ridgemont High"! classic and many stars got their start there. caught what 80's adolescence was all about. but my favorite is "Weird Science"!

Purple Rain, oh PLEASE do Purple Rain!!

I've STILL not seen Sixteen Candles!

The Evil Dead, Fright Night, and Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night 2
Posted by: Aaron | October 06, 2008 at 12:31 AM
You don't how many times I've had my hands on "Adventures in Babysitting" on DVD and haven't bought it. I have no clue why.
Posted by: Spears | October 05, 2008 at 11:18 PM
Adventures in Babysitting? He-he. Man I do love Elizabeth Shue.
How about the Star Trek movies? Or did you guys do that already?

I love the idea of a Sixteen Candles commentary. I also suggest Caddyshack, This Is Spinal Tap, the Sure Thing, Summer School, Midnight Run, Superman 2, and The Princess Bride; just going by DVDs that I have.
Posted by: Bassnote | October 05, 2008 at 10:37 PM
I'd vote for Caddyshack, Breakfast Club and Stripes.
Posted by: Michelle | October 05, 2008 at 09:36 PM
well the only reason i mentioned those movies that ya'll have done, doing a commentary is all together different than remembering things about a certain movie. doing commentary while you are seeing it might bring other stories, insights, other interesting thoughts
Posted by: CHAD | October 05, 2008 at 08:37 PM
You liked the Miami Spice idea, hem? I believe Sean would pay attention to that one,and probably listen to that podcast over and over again.
You should do a commentary on something campy after Halloween.Something like Caddyshack or Stripes you mentioned above.
Posted by: Miguel | October 05, 2008 at 08:35 PM
cool, no burning heart? i might actually like burning heart better, although eye of the tiger is classic.
Posted by: CHAD | October 05, 2008 at 08:35 PM
I like Rocky 3 and Ghostbusters, Chad. Both are movies people likely own on DVD.
And we've yet to cover them.
Though Frankie Sullivan from Survivor will tell the whole story about "Eye of the Tiger" on next week's show.
Posted by: Spears | October 05, 2008 at 08:31 PM
well if we're picking 80s movies for ya'll to a commentary one, some good picks could be, ghostbusters, red dawn, risky business, ferris bueller's day off, the sure thing, bill and ted's excellent adventure, planes trains and automobiles, the flamingo kid, and rocky 3. i could go on and on, but i'll leave it at that. i have to agree with miquel, a 80s porno might be interestingly funny.

Steve, "Sixteen Candles" is a good idea. "The Goonies"? Terrible idea. "Miami Spice",that`s an idea!
Posted by: Miguel | October 05, 2008 at 07:53 PM
well i enjoyed them. i dont know about anyone else, but i did
Posted by: CHAD | October 05, 2008 at 07:39 PM
Ah yes, the Sunday Night Chats. I can bring them back if everyone feels there's enough interest.
I'm sorta live chatting now because I'm at work, handling the Bucs and Rays games for the web.
Posted by: Spears | October 05, 2008 at 07:05 PM
What I was trying to say is that my son can help you out with "The Goonies" if you'd like. He's watched that nearly as much as "The Princess Bride" and "Uncle Buck."
I look forward to a 'cast on "Sixteen Candles." I can relate to Samantha Baker on so many levels. I mean, I could relate to Sam. Back in the day. You know. Before I got skillz.
