Blog battle: Janet Jackson vs. Beyonce
Days like this are miserable. Times pop music fraudster Sean Daly will drag me to lunch so he can run out to buy Beyonce's new disc, which I'll then rightfully refuse to play on my car's CD player.
Then he'll wax poetically in the newspaper about how he's ALWAYS loved her and how PERFECT her music is, when in reality he hasn't mentioned her name in the three years I've known him.
Sorry, Sean, but when it comes to the ultimate female entertainer, I'm going with Ms. Janet Jackson -- and not someone whose name sounds like a brand of fabric softener sheets.
Go here to read his misguided attempt to justify his career. And then enjoy a heaping dose of the Rhythm Nation here.
THREE REASONS J. JACKSON SCHOOLS BEYONCE:
1. LESS CLOTHES = GOOD THING: That wasn't a wardrobe malfunction for Janet during the Super Bowl a few years back -- it was a wardrobe revelation! Janet is a kinky little minx, and we celebrate that. Beyonce couldn't score a striptease halftime gig at the Poulan Weedeater Independence Bowl.
2. AND THE OSCAR GOES TO ...: Wasn't Beyonce about the only person appearing in Dream Girls who didn't get an Oscar nomination? Even Eddie "Remember I was once Axel Foley" Murphy got one. Face it, Janet did better acting in Good Times and Ghost Dad.
3. THE TUNES: Nasty, Escapade, What Have You Done For Me Lately. Janet fills our iPods with poppy, sexy sing-along fun. Beyonce has ... Sasha Fierce? (cricket, cricket). Don't worry, B, there's always room for you ... at the Golden Nugget showroom in Laughlin, Nev.

Relive the music, movies and culture of the greatest decade ever with Times online editor Steve Spears. A teen during the decade, Steve is obsessed with everything from Duran Duran to Journey, John Hughes to John Cusack, and parachute pants to Reaganomics.
E-mail Steve Spears:

Ha! I love this topic. I had no idea that so many shared my views on Beyonce. I agree with the poster who said miss B has no humility. I was watching a video mix of Beyonce's concert (The Beyonce Experience) and you had to see my dumbfound expression at the outrageous, outlandish, contrived and outright ridiculous things I saw. Not to be rude, but Beyonce is a caricature, a parody of herself. She is a joke, a wannabe legend, a wannabe Diana Ross, Tina Turner etc. but the girl lacks spirit, zest...you never feel an impact from her..you simply never feel her. It's just lacking.

I agree with April - these two women are absolutely different and cannot be compared! And it is a matter of prsonal taste to like one and dislike another (or both). Personally I am FOR Janet ( http://rapidqueen.com/?q=Janet+Jackson&filetype=AllFiles ), but it doesn't mean I am going to hate Beyonce... Rather stupid, I think...

beyonce is played out her album sucks
Posted by: jeff | January 05, 2009 at 01:32 PM
First of all, I HATE comparisons. Janet and Beyonce are two totally different artists. Is it really fair to compare? Since Janet doesn't have this HUGE bellowing voice, some people consider her to be the weaker performer which is not true. Don't get me wrong: Beyonce IS talented. I just can't relate to her. I sense something is sincerely fake about her. I don't see any humility within her and I'm a pretty good judge of character.
Janet's music takes me to another place. I only listen to Beyonce when I'm upset with my boyfriend. It's like saying Kobe Bryant is better than Michael Jordan because he's the HOT thing NOW or Usher is better than Michael Jackson because he is the HOT thing NOW. You can't say someone new is better than a legend just because they are the HOT thing NOW. Give Beyonce another 15 to 20 years to really see if she can take the title from Janet...but I seriously doubt it.

Janet has some things Beyonce can only HOPE to develop: Humility, a sweet spirit, and a complete down-to-earth personality.
Beyonce, in her comment, said that she grew up in the upperclass. Janet came up under different circumstances which gave her an appreciation for what she has acquired over the years.
Janet is not only beautiful on the outside, but inside as well. Beyonce is pretty on the outside, too... but her inside leaves much to be desired.
If it weren't for Janet, Beyonce would exist as she does. It's truly my hope that she sets the little young'n straight. Beyonce could have kept bragging about herself without even bringing the Jackson family into it, and I hope that she gets all the hell to pay for it. She could have said something more positive, like, 'we're African Americans. We work together (in hopes that we could inspire other African Americans to work together as well).'

Beyonce is vapid, shallow and uninspiring. Everything is so egocentric with her. Every move, every note screams" look at me look at me I'm Mo Bettah than you!"
She's talented and a great singer but what does she actually bring to the table?
She certainly is no innovator and is too intellectually challenged to write or perform socially conscious material.
Leona Lewis is the new voice- the new presence- the new immortal superstar position that Beyonce almost arrived of but fell short of by a long shot.
Janet on the other hand, she's put out two really crappy albums with lazy vocals and nothing remotely socially conscious, nothing particularly memorable- innovative yes- but memorable no. Fortunately Janet has a back catalog to rest on. Janet is a bonified superstar and has lots more to contribute once she loses Jermaine Dupri and other materialistic sensationalist minded hype producers. Janet has contributed greatly to the shape and sound of pop music and her voice has a great haunting presence- incredible performer- but she needs to get back to actual song writing and not let other people steer her into the rocks of disposable pop like these last two efforts.
Tweet is the new mysterious presence and addictive sounding siren that Janet once was. Just as Leona Lewis will inspire us with new beautiful soaring lush vocals and tear jerking songs- Tweet will keep us thinking- on our toes into the future.
I don't see how Beyonce can keep going much longer because she brings nothing original to the table. Janet on the other hand is to music what Sophia Loren is to film. Immortal.

I think Janet. Beyonce dose the same dum dance, wears the same booty shorts. Janet is far better with her singing and dancing. Janet performance's are 1000 times better than Beyonce. She just better, and has better looking body. Yall better compare Beyonce to Ciara or some other low class artist, cause she cant be compared to Janet!!!!
Posted by: Dinah | November 20, 2008 at 08:00 AM
Janet, all day, everyday! Beyonce's music is not even close to the trailblazing stuff Janet's put out. These children need to be taken to school, for real. Most of her fans are obnoxious queens under 25 ... and they can keep her.
Posted by: Me | November 19, 2008 at 10:13 AM
I must go with Janet on this one. While Beyonce is entertaining, it always seems like the same song, same dance, same routine, same attitude as always. It's been ten years since she came in the game, isn't it time to adjust like Janet does over the years.

Wow - look at all these responses!
A few years ago, Retro Hit Radio ran Every Single Ever Released by Janet Jackson - and I gotta say - it was amazing to listen to.
This show in itself proved to be a big revelation to our listeners who THOUGHT they knew anything about Janet's music - they certainly learnt a lot that night. The same goes for anyone who has seen Janet live in concert.
Compare Janet's 25+ years as a singer vs Beyonce who has been plugging away for just over 10. And all of her records.. sound. the. same.
Hell, I even like some of Beyonce's hits. It's plain and simple though, Beyonce has nothing on Janet.

I stopped lisening to Janet after she stopped working with Jam & Lewis.
I think Beyonce is a talented performer who does some really crappy songs.
IMHO, Beyonce is hotter now than Janet Jackson was in 1986 (and she was hot then). So there's that.
Posted by: Clark | November 19, 2008 at 01:06 AM
Party-pooper alert: Beyonce was nothing (almost literally) in the greatest decade, so why are you even arguing this point, Mr. Spears?
Strange indeed, I must say.
Now, if you were to blog battle Ms. Jackson vs. Madonna???

An iconic, incomparable, innovative, sexy songstress...that's Janet...always was and always will be. Recognize and bow down to the HBIC. She is the hardest working female in the game since she was "yay" high. Janet had the game on lock before Beyonce was even a twinkle in her mother's eye!
Posted by: Dunk_Is_The_Shhhh | November 18, 2008 at 10:08 PM
I think we may have all forgotten that is this is stuck in the 80's... we, for the most part, will pick Janet simply because we are and forever will be stuck in the 80's! ;)

wouldn't sean get the cds sent right to him, since he is the pop music critic. they never have to really buy a cd, do they?

Yay! I didn't get dragged to the store today by Sean after all. Instead, I got to stay here at the office and write about vampires all day.
Now that's a good Tuesday.

Janet was awesome until about 1995. I was down with her in your face attitude / cool sexy - Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis fashioned tunes. But since then, there isn't anything in her catalog that merits syncing on my iPod. So I ask, Janet: What have you done for ME lately?
Posted by: Gary in Gilroy | November 18, 2008 at 04:53 PM
Janet was great until about 1995. There is nothing in her catalog passed that which merits iPod syncing. Janet, I loved you, but what have you don for ME lately???
Posted by: Gary in Gilroy | November 18, 2008 at 04:44 PM
I was thinking about the vocal talents of Beyonce, and I really think she is just a decent singer. I do enjoy her voice, but she can't belt it out like Jennifer Hudson or Mariah Carrey. I would say the same goes for Rihanna. I love Rihanna but vocally, she really doesn't blow me away and probably the same goes for Janet, I always felt Michael was a much better singer than Janet.
By the ways, I like the "If I Were A Boy" song by Beyonce, but the lyrics are sort of disturbing for me.

it's 1:41p and so far spearsy's winning.
Posted by: time check | November 18, 2008 at 01:41 PM
I pick Janet because some of her songs tied directly into key life developments. (What girl didn't want to throw that "Miss Jackson if you please" line to an unappreciative boyfriend?)
Posted by: Michelle | November 18, 2008 at 12:34 PM
I'll vote for Janet. I like Janet's early albums, but her recent stuff is not my cup o' tea. Beyonce's songs all sound the same to me, and very synthetic. You can say that I'm slagging Beyonce because I'm in my 40's, but I'm a DJ and I play her music a lot. My opinion comes from listening extensively to both artists.
Posted by: Bassnote | November 18, 2008 at 12:09 PM
Can we say neither of them?
Janet Jackson,arghh! Beyonce,double arghh!
Since you all prefer Janet Jackson, what about between Janet and Paula Abdul? Which would you choose? I still say neither, but i`m curious about your option.
Posted by: Miguel | November 18, 2008 at 11:38 AM
I am far more a Janet fan than B, but I must give credit where it is due. Janet Jackson is a HUGE MEGASTAR OR INTERNATIONAL FAME... and has been for almost 25 years. Beyonce would not be who she is without the trailblazing by Janet.
That being said, Beyonce is a force of her own and I believe she is a more talented singer, but overall Janet is better. But that's also my opinion. Janet will always be my Diva, and Beyonce will be a Diva for her fans.
Let's just bring up Michael for just a second - and not the controversy. Every male superstar is compared to him (like people to Janet: Britney, Mya, Samantha Mumba, Rihanna, etc...) , but he is a big mix of James Brown, Break Dance, & Genius imagination. But do they say who's better Michael or James? NO, they both can coexist. Let Janet be Janet and Beyonce be Beyonce.
Janet has been to the mountain to, set records, opened doors, and left her mark, Beyonce is still making hers... and good for her for doing it!

beyonce rules the world i love her singing. i am in her top 10

Keep Janet Jackson and her dysfunctional no talent family. Beyonce has more class and talent in her little finger than Janet can ever hope to have.
Posted by: Tarra | November 18, 2008 at 10:37 AM
OK, OK, I deleted the "girl" part. Back to the part now about how I crushed Daly.

Posted by: CHAD | November 18, 2008 at 09:47 AM
Walter, you're right, me thinks. NASTY BOY is Janet's tune.

Fearless Leader,
I've got to side with you on this one. Here's my take:
It's not that I don't admire Ms. Knowles' talent, and her hyperbolic anatomy (which is enough to give Malibu Barbie unrealistic self-image issues). It's just that she's only halfway through her "Behind The Musuc" story arc.
Jant Jackson, on the other hand" has completed her pop culture morality play. The highs, the lows, the high-profile hook-ups, the tabloid break-ups, the ill-conceived forays into other media; for better or worse, she's done it all.
So for the time being, Janet sits first-chair in the "naughty hottie" section of the pop culture orchestra.
Of course, once Beyonce travels the inevitable down-swing of her own career she may be able to challenge Janet on an "apples-to-apples" basis.
I'll review the scoring after the 2015 Peoples' Choice Awards, when three Beyonce back-up dancers are injured in a tragic Spanx explosion.

I can just imagine Sean singing falsetto "If I were a Boy" while he and Spearsy cruise around greater St. Pete.
Posted by: Marissa | November 18, 2008 at 08:52 AM
it is quite silly to have an alter ego, unless you're bruce wayne or clark kent. that being said, didn't janet have an alter ego a few years ago. both women are very easy on the eyes. i'm kinda with steve on this one, not much of a dance music fan. i'm a 41 year old white dude, what do i need it for. so suffice to say, i don't have any janet or beyonce on the ole ipod. but, if push came to shove, i'd have to have to side with steve, janet is the better musician, although that's not saying much. it's like picking the lesser of two evils. although, janet has been on a major slide in recent years, ever since the malfunction. none of her post super bowls records have done any kind of business. but she did do the greatness that is black cat, all those years ago. on a side note, did any of ya'll see beyonce's skit on snl with justin timberlake this past saturday, totally hilarious.
steve, be the good friend and let sean listen to the cd in your car, a little pain will go a long way. it's the cool thing to do.

Janet... NOT. EVEN. A. CONTEST!
Posted by: julie in nc | November 18, 2008 at 08:42 AM
There's no doubt that I am far more familiar (and liking) Janet Jackson's tunes. I have some Beyonce' on the iPod. I mean, a woman with a big ol' bootay has to have "Bootilicious" cranked when she's workin' it off. Wait, that was Destiny's Child. No matter. It was all Beyonce' anyway.
I wonder why Beyonce' has to have an alter ego. Didn't Mariah Carey do that? Can't she be fierce as is? The use of the word "fierce" is just too much Tyra Banks for me. ARGH!
