Disorder clouds New Order reissues

New_order Here's the good news: Rhino has reissued all five albums by New Order from the '80s, along with a bunch of non-album singles, b-sides and various remixes.

Sadly, there's bad news: Fans in the U.K., who got their hands on the releases about a month ago, are complaining of hundreds of errors within the recordings themselves -- though mainly on the bonus material.

"The pops and crackles on many of the tracks suggest they were transferred directly from commercially available vinyl recordings rather than from the original master tapes," reports Reuters news service.

What's odd is that Rhino went ahead and released the discs in the U.S. after learning of the problems, Reuters says. Still, a solution is at hand: Rhino says it will fix the problems and allow fans to exchange their flawed CDs for the fixed ones.

New Order bassist Peter Hook, on his MySpace page, says the problems wouldn't have happened if the band had heard the discs before release. "This is a very difficult one. We are aware of the problems and because we did not have finished product to listen to. It has, shall we say, slipped through the net."

TOP 5 NEW ORDER TUNES:

5. FINE TIME: "You know I've met a lot of cool chicks. But I've never met a girl with all her own teeth." [Video]

4. SHELL SHOCK: "Don't give up the game until your heart stops beating." [Video]

3. BLUE MONDAY: "If it wasn't for your misfortunes, I'd be a heavenly person today." [Video]

2. TRUE FAITH: "My morning sun is the drug that brings me near to the childhood I lost, replaced by fear." [Video]

1. BIZARRE LOVE TRIANGLE: "Every time I see you falling, I get down on my knees and pray." [Video]

Good site,it is helpful.

"Love Vigilantes" is a truly great song. I love it as much as "1963"

"Technique" is a great album, but I love/hate to say that "Electronic" by Electronic is the best New Order album they never made.

Joy Division > New Order

Rob Bass from Chicago

Blaine, Yeah, I really like "Get Ready" as well....My favorite tracks on that album would have to be; Crystal, Primitive Notion, Vicious Streak, and Turn my way....A definite low point for the album is Rock the Shack; but the song did kinda grow on me.

I wouldn't discount "Waiting for the Sirens' Call" either...that is a great album as well...The title track is absolutely amazing.

CHAD

another band i've heard of, but never heard. never cared for this kinda music, probably never will. but the news of rhino messing up the reissues surprises me. rhino has been very good with remastering older cds. their work on the monkees reissues are exceptional.

Blaine

Technique is one sweet album, but my favourite track has to be True Faith.

Anyone else a fan of their 2001 "comeback" album Get Ready? I was pleasantly surprised when it came out; it has more than their usual dose of guitar and really rocks.

Loved these guys since the mid-'80s. Wish I could've seen them live. Is Hooky even still with the band?

Kevy Metal

+1 for Dream Attack

Rob Bass from Chicago

You guys all have it totally wrong; I'm not bragging, but I am probably SIT80's #1 authority on NewOrder's music and here is the definifinitve top 5 songs of a TRUE new order fan.

5.) Temptation

4.) Run

3.) The Perfect Kiss

2.) Age of Consent

1.) Dream Attack (New Order's Opus, in my opinion...lyrics, melody, music, bassline, guitars, synths, everything about this song is sublime.)

I just feel very lucky to have seen New Order when they played in Chicago a couple years ago...it might turn out that they will never play as a band again. Peter Hook and Sumner are fire and ice as bandmates and are constantly dumping on each other behind each other's backs...

New Order's greatest album has got to be "Technique"....The worst song on that album is on Steve's top 5; "Fine Time" (It was New Order's poor attempt to enter the acid-music scene...)

Bassnote

It's hard to pick just five because I love a lot of New Order's stuff.

Mark in East Texas

I'm OK with your list, Spearsy. Post-80s, I'm fond of Regret and Krafty. Might this lead to a JoyDivision/New Order podcast?

Bassnote

My top 5:
5. Age Of Consent
4. Thieves Like Us
3. Blue Monday
2. Perfect Kiss
1. True Faith

GlennS.

Steve, thanks for addressing the sound quality issues with these releases. Too many music writers seem to give automatic glowing reviews to any and all reissues. In this day of "loudness wars" and other questionable pratices by the music industry, we all need to be skeptical and informed.

And I hope they get this New Order thing straightened out because these guys made some damn good albums.

Kevy Metal

+1 for Age of Consent

Mike in Austin

Reunion Tour? Have I missed it?

Mike in Austin

- Love Vigilantes
- Temptation

MinA

Dr. Dim

Here's my top five:

5. Ceremony
4. Age Of Consent
3. Perfect Kiss
2. Love Vigilantes
1. Blue Monday

'Nuff said.

Miguel

I had heard about this before. They should allow people to exchange their CDs for free, which i believe they will.

Good top 5 list.A lot of other songs comes to mind, likr Temptation and Ceremony from the Substance album or Run from Technique.
