No, Heather. It's Heather's turn for a new DVD
Just because it's possible that some of us don't blow our entire paychecks on repackaged DVDs: Did you forget the 20th anniversary of Heathers is nearly upon us? "Well, (bleep) me gently with a chainsaw!"
Anchor Bay Entertainment is re-releasing the 1989 high school classic starring Winona Ryder, Christian Slater and Shannen Doherty. Due out Nov. 18, "Heathers: Limited Edition Locker Set" has a ton of extras, according to DVDactive.com, including:
- A featurette called "Return to Westerburg High.''
- A full-length audio commentary by the director, producer and writer. (What? None of the stars? Guess they had to motor to the big party or something.)
- A 20-page hardcover yearbook (What's the up-chuck factor on that?).
- A T-shirt (yes, one of them is reportedly a ''Big Fun'' shirt).
- Refrigerator magnets. (Hey, even Stuck in the '80s gives out free fridge magnets!)
- A "collectible Westerburg algebra book." (In case you send your SAT scores to San Quentin instead of Stanford, maybe?)
Oh yeah, and two actual DVDs. Because chances are, you actually like the movie. (If you listened to our podcast on the movie a couple of years ago, you know my take.)
Personally, I think they're missing some essential ingredients. Where are the collectible corn nuts? (BBQ, of course.) No coupons for drain cleaner? No home set for strip croquet? Not even any sexually perverse photography involving tennis rackets? Whatever, Heather.

Too bad most of the comments are dumping on this movie. I first saw it after it was released on laserdisc (remember those?) and thoroughly enjoyed the dark humor. Although I still have the laserdisc (and a laserdisc player), I might just pick up the DVD set... who wouldn't want a "Big Fun" tee?

Sandy that is such tragic news. I'm sorry for that to be your memory. I would feel the same way.

I think I will never watch this movie because I knew a 9-year old boy who watched it and then went out into his backyard and hung himself. Very sad for the family and the babysitter, who eventually had a mental breakdown. I will never forget looking at a little boy in his coffin with all of the baseball gear waiting to be buried.

I liked Slater a LOT more in Pump Up The Volume than I did Heathers. But I'm willing to concede it could be the fact that I didn't see this movie until 2 years ago.

Loved the movie. I think I quoted it nonstop my first year in college. Just a pitch perfect black comedy. This seems to be the high point for Slater. That radio film was also a great showcase for him as well. I really thought he was going to have a great career. Then he started doing crappy movies like Kuffs. At least that one had one good thing about it and it wasn't Slater.
Winona did go on to an Oscar nod or two after this. Then she thought she was going to get recognition for Girl Interrupted only to have Angelina get all the accolades.

This is an '80s movie? Count me in with Spearsy and the others who are not fans.

I can understand why some folks may not like this flick, but there is no denying this makes an excellent bookend statement to the decade that we love so much. While Winona and Christian had both done work before, this was really the movie that launched them. I'm not sure if I own this on DVD or not so maybe I'll pick this up, but probably in a cheaper one-disc version. I find I rarely have time to watch all the special features.

Never did like that movie.

I don't think I'll be spending the cash on this one. When you have youngsters in the house, you find it harder to justify owning some of the R rated movies from your youth

I refuse to re-buy DVDs. I bought the Heathers tin awhile back, I'm done! I'll have to rent the disc to watch the Return to Westerburg film.

Good grief how many times are they going to repackage this? The CDs sound just like the 20th High School Reunion Edition.
Personally I love the movie and SIT80s does a great podcast on this one despite Steve's loathing of the film.

How about a recipe book for Drano cocktails?

Shannen Doherty...why won't she just go away for good? I never liked Heathers, with or without alcohol involved.

This summer, I briefly dated a younger guy. I put him through some standard questioning. One of many inquiries is "favorite...?"
When I got to "What's your utmost favorite-must-watch 80s flick?" He replied, "HEATHERS"
I knew it was doomed, but I gave him a break since he was 10 years younger. He professed to loving the 80's. Yet, he clearly needed my tutelage. I assure you, it went both ways.
The only line I can quote off the top of my head from HEATHERS: "Lick it up, baby. Lick.it.up"
