'We'd like to play a little tune for you'

Ferris Hey gang. Now that the holiday weekend is over, how about helping out SIT80s fan Jeremy with his humble request:

Steve, I wanted to compile a list of musical movie moments (or television moments from '80s television shows available on DVD) for an '80s Christmas party. For example the Tom Cruise dancing scene in Risky Business, "Banana Boat" from Beetlejuice, "She's Lost That Lovin' Feelin" from Top Gun, or "You're the Best Around" from the finale of Karate Kid. I know your readers and listeners are a wealth of '80s knowledge and wonder if they may be able to help compile a list of these great moments from '80s television and film. Thanks! Jeremy

Okay, here are a few more for Jeremy...

TWIST AND SHOUT (Ferris Bueller): Perhaps the crowning music-movie moment of all time. (Watch)

TRY A LITTLE TENDERNESS (Duckie in Pretty in Pink): Jon Cryer, renaissance man. (Watch)

SHAKE A TAIL FEATHER (Ray Charles in The Blues Brothers): Heck, anything from that movie works, but Ray rules. (Watch)

THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN (The Bus Boys in 48 Hours): Why don't we talk about this movie more often? (Listen)

GREATEST LOVE OF ALL
(Eddie Murphy as Sexual Chocolate in Coming to America): Still Eddie's best movie of the '80s. (Watch)

WALTZ OF THE FLOWERS (Caddyshack): Ah yes, don't forget the water ballet scene at Bushwood Country Club.

TV PARTY (Repo Man): The vastly underrated Black Flag ... or Otto's version. You pick.

TEQUILA (Pee Wee's Big Adventure): Paul Reubens, come back soon! (Watch)

Keep them coming, gang.

Comments

"Greatest Love of All" - from Say Anything
"Rawhide" from the Blues Brothers
"Danke Shane" from Ferris Bueller
"Please Please Please Let Met Get What I Want" (instrumental) from Ferris Bueller - Ferris, Cameron, and Sloan in The Art Institute Of Chicago.
"Infatuation" by Rod Stewart - opening credits of The Sure Thing
TV moments:
U2 performing "Sunday Bloody Sunday" from "Live At Red Rocks"
Anything from "Live Aid"

I absolutely agree with "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and "Pee Wee's Big Adventure".

Would it be too strange to suggest the "Blue Oyster Scene" from "Police Academy 4"?

off the top of my head

bullet the blue sky from rattle and
hum

any musical number from top secret

anything from spinal tap

the do wah diddy scene from stripes

tracks of my tears from platoon

love somebody from hard to hold

on the dark side from eddie and the
cruisers

on the tv side

the greatest american hero while believe it or not is playing.

although not 80s, but i first saw it in the 80s, any video montage from the monkees

play with me- bill & ted's excellent adventure. don't you forget about me- breakfast club. in your eyes- say anything. weird science- weird science

Gotta have something from Footloose

If we're talking about montages you have a couple choices from Better Off Dead:

"Burger cooking" with Everybody Wants Some by Van Halen
"Car repair" with Like To Get To Know You Well by Howard Jones

(There's the "Ski with Monique" one too but the music is not as recognizable.)

Everybody always thinks of the parade for Ferris Bueller, but sometimes I can't get "Rotating Heads" out of my head, and then I think about Ferris trying to get home before the rest of his family.

And nobody has mentioned "In Your Eyes" and "Say Anything" yet?

and "Paint it Black" playing over that stark black and white closing credits for "Full Metal Jacket"

Love "The Boys Are Back in Town", but what about "Roxanne" by The Police which Reggie sings loudly while wearing his headphones in jail?

How about a couple Tom Cruise options? First, you have to have "Old Time Rock n Roll" from Risky Business (though starting to get even more played out by the new Guitar Hero commercials). You could also pick something from Top Gun. Like "You Lost that Lovin' Feeling" or "Great Balls of Fire" or "Danger Zone" or "Playing With the Boys".

How about the scene from Beetlejuice where they sing "Day-o (The Banana Boat Song)" by Harry Belafonte?

Those would be a few movie suggestions that had not been mentioned yet.

Walter, the end with The English Beat is a classic. Family Guy did an excellent tribute to that scene.

Do commercial jingles count? I'd personally throw some in there. Like Frosted Lucky Charms (they're magically delicious!)....for all you do, this Bud's for you!....Raise your hand if you're Sure!....the Michael Jackson Pepsi commercial.....Transformers! More than meets the eye! The possibilities are endless. Dare I say....Mon Chi Chi!

"Love Is Strange" or "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" from Dirty Dancing.

The ending of "Mannequin" with that so-bad-it's-good Starship song: "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now."

Are there any good music moments in "Cocktail"? I remember loving the soundtrack.

"Johnny Be Good" from "Back to the Future."

From TV, a biggie for me is the Billy Vera and the Beaters "(What Did You Think) At This Moment" from Family Ties. Tear jerker my friends...

From a movie, I love the final scene in Crossroads where Ralph Macchio beats Steve Vai with the classical guitar piece. It'll give you chills.

I'll add this to the list

You can't get much more 80's than "Revenge of the Nerds"

Classic!

i'm just sitting here saying "oh yeah" as i read each post.

Here's a couple from a couple of movies...

"Partyman" (Prince from "Batman") - The Joker ruining the art museum.

"Trust" (Prince from "Batman") - The Joker on the float, releasing Smilex gas.

"No Easy Way" (Robert Tepper from "Rocky IV") - Yes, a montage! And not just any montage, but a flashback montage!

"Hearts on Fire" (John Cafferty from "Rocky IV") - A training montage, hell yes! There's also a second training montage set to music by the 'maestro' Vince DiCola (crickets).

Bassnote...your taste in music is absolutely amazing. We should hang out...

I don't think you have mentioned a single band that I haven't liked.

Two from "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" -- Don Henley's "Love Rules" plays while Jennifer Jason Leigh and Ratner (sorry, don't know the actor's name) are awkwardly hanging out in her room, and "Kashmir" by Led Zeppelin, used just after Ratner has been told that that Zep album is a must-play.

Don't forget The Rat was told to play the 2nd side of Led Zeppelin 4, and he was actually playing something off of Physical Graffiti.

John Candy driving the wrong direction down the interstate to the tune of Ray Charles' "Mess Around" from Planes, Trains and Automobiles. You laugh just thinking about it.

"You're go-ing the wrong way!"

"We Are Not Alone" -- The Breakfast Club/Karla Devito
It's the scene after they partake in the goods from Bender's locker and they're dancing around the library.

Just thought of a good one. the beginning of the movie "Fandango" where they are hanging out of the car at high speed, grabbing beer bottles off the road. The song is "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" by Elton John.

Leonardo,
I love the Rocky IV soundtrack! Those montages are my favorite.
You could also add "Burning Heart" by Survivor which was playing when the plane lands in snowy Russia.

I think there are 2 different conversations. One is songs that are in movies/tv soundtracks. The other is scenes in movies/tv where the characters perform songs.

Those create 2 totally separate lists for me. Regardless of which way you go, I am very surprised that nothing from Purple Rain has been mentioned (unless I missed it).

Shout - during the toga party in Animal House.

darnit.....Animal house is '78. So close and yet so far. I always think that is a move from 1980. oh well

Bad Moon Rising by CCR from American Werewolf In London.

In "Bull Durham," when Crash and the team create their rainout, they're playing around to Los Lobos's "I Got Loaded". That's a peppy song, and every time it pops on my iPod I get the urge to misbehave.

Best line ever from a USF Homecoming planning meeting a looooong time ago: "Why is it every year we say we're going to get Chris Rock and we end up with Randy Watson?"
