Molly Ringwald, John Hughes holiday again
Two of the biggest '80s icons share a birthday today. This is your day, Molly Ringwald and John Hughes!
Hughes (59) and Ringwald (41) have maintained a mystical relationship from the start. Molly starred in three of Hughes' classics: Sixteen Candles, Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink. And if he'd had his way, she'd also have appeared in Some Kind of Wonderful (which went to Lea Thompson instead, despite her dreadful turn in Howard the Duck).
Still not sure? Read this 1986 article in which Molly interviewed John in Seventeen Magazine. They complete each other's sentences!
Hughes is still MIA these days; his most recent work was writing the story for 2008's Drillbit Taylor (under his pen name, Edmond Dantes). Molly's as busy as ever, currently co-starring in ABC Family's The Secret Life of the American Teenager.

Relive the music, movies and culture of the greatest decade ever with Times online editor Steve Spears. A teen during the decade, Steve is obsessed with everything from Duran Duran to Journey, John Hughes to John Cusack, and parachute pants to Reaganomics.
E-mail Steve Spears:

Mark in East Texas, you are probably safe (or, more to the point, your wife is) as it's a long way from leafy Surrey to the lone star state. That said, I do have family near Houston, and I'm overdue a visit...

My wife bears a strong resemblance to Molly Ringwald. This may be an indication of some repressed 80s issues, but this isn't the forum for such talk. I'd post a photo, but I'm afraid Jono might try to steal her.
Spearsy, I've never been able to get through your Sweet Charity interview with Molly. Just too painful. That's not the Molly I want to remember.

I try not to bring up Molly's twins. It's a sore spot in my relationship with her.

Also Matt Dillon's birthday today (turns 45). The Outsiders is classic.
Feb 18th is a power day. Also born on this date is Dr. Dre (the guy from NWA, not the fat dude from Yo MTV Raps), John Travolta and Dennis DeYoung (from Styx) among several others.

Okay, that's funny. I use Edmond Dantes as a fake name myself - it's the name of the protagonist in Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo.

Don't forget Molly is expecting twins, too! That'll keep her BUSY.

Have nursed a Molly-crush for more than 2 decades now - I have an understanding wife and she's my free pass. One day, one day...
Just got the DVD of Some People Call it a Sling Blade. Not had a chance to watch it yet - anyone know if it's classic Molly?
