Have a fave '80s flick (not from the '80s)?
Ever since the success of flicks like The Wedding Singer and Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion, Hollywood has rekindled its hot love affair with the '80s. And so trips to the cineplex have been one long couple skate -- all set to the tune of a dreamy power ballad.
So this weekend, Stuck in the '80s is recording our second installment of Great '80s Movies Not Actually Made in the '80s. We've covered a lot of the obvious ones already -- The Wedding Singer, Donnie Darko, 200 Cigarettes.
But there are so many more -- Starter for 10, American Psycho, 24 Hour Party People, the new Adventureland, Basquiat. And yes, we'll even accept movies set in current times but with lots of flashbacks to the '80s (a la Romy & Michelle, Kickin' It Old School and just about anything by the great Adam Sandler).
So help us out. Nominate your favorite non-'80s movies about the '80s and then tune in next week to see if we honor your favorite flicks.

E-mail Steve Spears:

I totally forgot one...a few years back VH1 released Totally Awesome. It's a general spoof of many 80's movie themes. You've got a brother and sister who are the "new kids." The sister loves to dance (dance-ah) even though it's not allowed. The brother is the least popular kid in the school (announced over the school PA system). A Mr. Miagi (sp?)-type character...the popular douche bag...Tone Loc singing "Crazy stuff" to the tune of "Wild Thing." It's totally cheesy, but definitely has it's moments.

The Lives of Others, although it certainly does not make you long for the 80s.
Then there's the little-seen Whatever, released in 1998 but set in early 1981. Pretty grim social realism starring an absolutely phenomenal Liza Weil (a couple of years before Gilmore Girls), and not really a nostalgia piece either. Damn fine movie, though. Too bad it got lost somehow.

We Own the Night (set from 1988-1989). There wasn't anything overtly 80's though...

Hysteria, the Def Leppard Story also fits.

mick you're talking about "the rocker." i always liked 200 cigarettes.
plus people it's about movies NOT made in the 80s but are set in the 80s. so "better off dead" and "valley girl" don't count even though they're great films.

Here are two more: Without a Paddle has some 80's nostalgia and 13 Going on 30 (this one begins and ends on the 80's).

Wasn't there a movie out just recently about how this 80's band kicks the drummer out and they go on to fame and fortune while he kits the skids? Called rock n roll or rock dude something? SOunds like it would fit the bill.

If you can grandfather it in, Detroit Rock City is a great movie about the late 70's. It reminded me about my childhood (I was a teen in the 80's) and had stuff like Strech Armstrong in it. It is a movie to see, especially if you are a Kiss Fan.

"The Wedding Singer" wins by sheer volume of pop culture references. Nobody who was actually alive during the '80s was as '80s as any character in that movie.

The Wedding Singer will always be my favorite 80sentric movie. The first date that I went on with my (now) wife was to see that movie. It will always have a special place in my heart. I liked Romy & Michelle's... because it nailed the whole clique scene of high school so well.

Everyone thinks of Boogie Nights as a 70's film, but the last 70 mins are pure 80's.
Porn move from film to tape, the Sister Christian Jessie's Girl drug deal gone bad. The movie even ends with a nod to Raging Bull.

I love Wedding Singer as #1, but high props to "Rock Star". I think that movie nailed it, right down to the Seattle rock scene starting to bring down Big 80's Hair Heavy Metal bands.
Does "The Last Days" of Disco" count?

There is also Definatly Maybe with Ryan Renolds. He tells the story of how he met her mother, most of it is set in the 80's and I really enjoyed it.

Well here is one that doesn't really fit in but it does in a way. The movie is called Two Tickets to Paradise about 3 friends who were very popular in the 80's, but now thier lives suck. So when one of the friends wins 2 tickets to the NCAA football championship, they all pile in a car and head off to the game. It stars DB Sweeny and the other guy from scrubs. I saw it in Kuwait when DB stopped by and showed it to us. He is the nicest guy and if you haven't seen it yet, go watch it.

The great Adam Sandler!! Haha! You`re a crazy man,Spearsy!
Doesn`t Brokeback Mountain end in the 80s? Maybe not the perfect movie for the podcast. Take a nice time for American Psycho, good one.

For pure fun and it's real 1980s feel, I'd say Rock Star .. I am a golden god!
.... Fargo is set in the late 1980s,and is a far superior flick, but it doesn't really say "80s" any more than any other decade.
Also, Goodfellas has some 1980s scenes in it that really say 1980s .. .the lucky hat?

Most of the movie "Watchmen" was set in the 80s. It used the nuclear annihilation theme quite a bit, along with some 80s tunes.
A bit off topic as you asked for movies, but the USA network show "Psych" is an 80s addict's best friend. Every show is riddled with 80s jokes about music, movies, style, etc.

Better Off Dead! John Cusack at his 80's best.
