The 'Purple Rain' easter egg hunt is on!
Remember that once-promised audio commentary for Purple Rain that we recorded as a Stuck in the '80s podcast back in January? It's finally edited, finished and ... HIDDEN SOMEWHERE on this blog as a special Easter Egg present to you!
Don't go looking for it on iTunes, because we won't be uploading it. Why not? Because, frankly, it's two hours of really bad jokes that sounds more and more shaky as the minutes tick by. And the last 20 minutes is basically me singing along to every song, drawing the ire of co-hosts Sean Daly, Stephanie Hayes and Vegas Girlfriend. Still, for hard-core fans of SIT80s, it's full of insider jokes, callouts to longtime fans and other mischief.
Like our Halloween audio commentary, it helps to have the Purple Rain DVD to play along while listening to the podcast. But it's not mission-critical. You can hear the movie playing in the background.
So have a nice hunt looking for it. And if you do find it, please don't spoil the surprise for everyone else. Meanwhile, stay tuned because our Hall & Oates podcast will go online early this week.
Start clicking away. You never know where it's buried. And don't be surprised if you come across a couple of fake eggs in the process. Heh-heh.

Relive the music, movies and culture of the greatest decade ever with Times online editor Steve Spears. A teen during the decade, Steve is obsessed with everything from Duran Duran to Journey, John Hughes to John Cusack, and parachute pants to Reaganomics.
E-mail Steve Spears:

I found some of the fake ones without knowing a real one or this thread existed. I searched for the hidden location, even though it had already been posted. The hunt was fun and the commentary is great. Is the link still being moved?

OK just listened to the second half. Not as good as the first one.Still acceptable, but first half had more energy. Are you getting old,Mr. Spears? Midnight and you`re done ;-)
Posted by: Miguel | April 25, 2009 at 08:48 PM
OK,i finally took some time to listen to the show.It was great! Hilarious (except for a little Miguel mention there. We`ll have to discuss that, haha!) The best in ages! Why were you so worried,Steve? Sean was on fire there!
Posted by: Miguel | April 25, 2009 at 01:34 PM
well i think it was an entertaining show. so what that it wasn't so movie specific. it was funny. that's the whole point isn't it. next one, step will have to get drunk. you and sean have both had your moment to shine, so to speak. it's her time now.

Yeah, We all mean well. Just having fun.

Oh yeah! Actually it makes sense Steve.Easter Eggs! Hahahaha! I haven`t noticed the relation between Easter eggs and Easter.Nice!
Posted by: Miguel | April 13, 2009 at 09:20 PM
Just to be clear Spearsy some of us really do appreciate this commentary, and giving you a hard time is our way of showing it.
Posted by: Kevy Metal | April 13, 2009 at 08:01 PM
I found the song "(I Want 2 B A) Modernaire" by Dez Dickerson on a site called Bleep.com.
Posted by: Bassnote | April 13, 2009 at 04:37 PM
We hide eggs on Easter, Miguel.
On Easter Monday, we throw them at the SIT80s hosts apparently.
And yes, it's not exactly a brilliant commentary. Hence, the limited release.
Posted by: Spears | April 13, 2009 at 02:24 PM
All is forgiven, you no longer suck.
Posted by: Bassnote | April 13, 2009 at 01:48 PM
It`s the first time i`m seeing this blog post.So let`s see,you are pi##ing off your fans by having to search this podcast and then after all the search you´ll disappoint them with your show (which apparently is so bad you don`t post in a regular manner).Brilliant,my friend!
I´m not going to search,i can live very well without a Purple Rain commentary show, but i think it`s a fun idea, dude! (But you could`ve had picked a different day.On Easter day? Wow!)
Posted by: Miguel | April 13, 2009 at 01:26 PM
I'm not trying to upset anyone. I just thought it'd be fun.
Here you go. Fun over.

That wasn't so hard to find.
Posted by: Dan | April 13, 2009 at 11:32 AM
You suck.
Posted by: Bassnote | April 13, 2009 at 11:31 AM
Everytime someone finds it, I move it.
Posted by: Spears | April 13, 2009 at 10:48 AM
Well, what do you know? I found it. Now I'll have to get the 'Purple Rain' on the Netflix.
Those who can't find it, it's right under
Posted by: Dr. Dim | April 13, 2009 at 10:44 AM
A ha! Wow, you did hide it good.
... Just found it. You clever clever man, you!
Spears, you should try doing veggie dogs with veggie chorizo to satisfy that chilidog craving without the guilt and frequent trips to the you-know-where. Perhaps the VGF will like it, too
Posted by: Ian (in CT) | April 13, 2009 at 10:26 AM
I'm pretty sure I've never said that I hated Purple Rain. I love Prince too much!
But the fact remains ... Easter is over.... where is the @%$#%& podcast? :D
Posted by: Carla | April 13, 2009 at 10:23 AM
The link that Dr. Fink found is our original Purple Rain podcast we did 3 years ago. It's not the audio commentary.
Posted by: Spears | April 13, 2009 at 10:12 AM
Wow Bassnote! That was answered quite a while ago by Dr Fink.
I'll see how long I can take commentary on a film I really don't like!
BTW, Spears, a belated "Bravo" on the last podcast with VGF.
Posted by: Ian (in CT) | April 13, 2009 at 10:07 AM
Yes, and it's going to get thicker if you don't tell us where the #$%@@ thing is!
Posted by: Bassnote | April 13, 2009 at 10:02 AM
Wow, the animosity is thick! It's just a goofy, two-hour commentary on a movie that everyone swore four months ago that you all hated.
Posted by: Spears | April 13, 2009 at 09:15 AM
No. In the RSS reader, it posts whenever you upload the podcast.
Posted by: Ian (in CT) | April 13, 2009 at 07:38 AM
Ian, that's the Halloween podcast you see right below the blog item on Google Reader. Episode 145, right?
Posted by: Spears | April 13, 2009 at 07:14 AM
I get the blog via Google Reader. Spears challenges us to find the podcast and it's right there below the blog entry! No challenge there. Technology wins over wits any day!
Posted by: Ian (in CT) | April 13, 2009 at 07:07 AM
I've been at this almost all day and you know what?....The hell with the thrill of the hunt! Where is it?!!
Posted by: The Man Known Only as.......Rowan | April 13, 2009 at 01:10 AM
That's great Dr. Fink if you want to hear the Purple Rain podcast from a couple of years ago.
Posted by: Kevy Metal | April 13, 2009 at 01:03 AM
pssst...
On the left side: scroll down through Categories and Recent Episodes, keep scrolling down past Bon Jovi Concert review, past the Epic 100th episode, keep on goin way past Sid and Nancy, past The Cure, U2 and Spinal Tap, Technology of the 80s, and VOILA--Click on PURPLE RAIN.
Posted by: Dr. Fink | April 13, 2009 at 12:13 AM
I say worst Spearsy because as others have attested I spent over an hour looking for this "Easter Egg". I have eventually found it, but the process was not fun. Anyway, thanks for getting the gang together and doing the movie commentary. I'm listening to it now as I write.
Two words: "entrenched lesbians"

I guess if no one tells us how to find this egg thing or if that jerk, Spears, doesn't tell, this will be the only SIT80s podcast I won't listen to. I haven't the patience for this sh@t.
Posted by: Dr. Dim | April 12, 2009 at 11:12 PM
for the love of pete, someone let us know where this thing is. sorry for the rant earlier, i'm a little irritable.
Posted by: CHAD | April 12, 2009 at 11:10 PM
This sucks.
Posted by: Bassnote | April 12, 2009 at 10:39 PM
i hope the commentary is posted in a proper way on a new blog. in total, i've probably been on here four or so hours looking for it. i've clicked every link, nothing. nothing against steve, but i f...ing hate easter eggs. when i get a dvd, i don't wanna spend any time looking for a feature unless it's on the special features menu.
Posted by: CHAD | April 12, 2009 at 10:36 PM
Found it.....off to listen.
Posted by: Chelle | April 12, 2009 at 09:35 PM

Posted by: Gary in Gilroy | April 12, 2009 at 02:42 PM
Has anybody been able to find it yet? I don't want to know where it is(thrill of the hunt you know), I just want to find out if it's there and not some demented prank.
Posted by: The Man Known Only as.......Rowan | April 12, 2009 at 02:31 PM
Curse you Steve Spears! I sit here frazzled on my 4th cup of coffee, clicking away, trying to read HTLM source code for a clue...yet nothing! Meanwhile there's a pounding on the office door; the yelling of my wife, the cries of my children.."Dad when's the Easter Bunny gonna come?!?"
...Hang on I'll be there in a minute...
Oh I will find it!
Posted by: Gary in Gilroy | April 12, 2009 at 01:37 PM
Though I had it.
Very funny guys, Ha Ha
I'm gonna get you two for that one
