Ron Howard's 'Parenthood' headed to NBC ... 20 years later
Cowboy Gil rides again. Parenthood, the Ron Howard ensemble film with Steve Martin, Rick Moranis, Keanu Reeves and more, is coming to NBC as an hour-long TV series this fall.
The Associated Press says the cast will include Peter Krause, Maura Tierney and Craig T. Nelson. Howard, who directed the original 1989 film, is reportedly onboard as an executive producer on the show, which -- like the movie -- will be about "an extended family dealing with life's pressures."
The filming of the pilot, though, is off to a tragic start. The Los Angeles Times reports that Nora O'Brien, NBC's executive in charge of drama programming, died on the set of Parenthood last week. According to media reports, O'Brien died from a brain aneurysm.

A mockery of parenting? I thought this movie was great--and way more real than a lot of other shows. It wasn't meant to be a bible on how to parent, I think it was meant to show how parenting can bring out the neurotic tendencies in us all. I find Leave it to Beaver to be a mockery of parenting myself.
And Kevy Metal--that is the first thing I thought of when I read this post--too funny!

With Richie Cunningham on board this just might have the makings of cult greatness the likes of Arrested Development. Krause, Tierney and Nelson are all great as well. I await with baited breath.
The question is will they re-enact the vibrator joke?

Before I was even a parent, I found this movie to be very sad. I think that is made a mockery of parenting and showed really bad examples of what a family was. I wouldn't watch the series just because it is named after this movie.

The 'bible,' IMDB.com, says it was actuall a one-hour dramedy and ran 12 episodes in 1990 ...

Exactly.I think they made a sitcom that was canceled after only a few episodes. It had DiCaprio and David Arquette in it.Ed Begley Jr. playing the Steve Martin caracter.
