Clearwater City Council wants to get in on the Rays' debate

Rays officials were asked to attend Thursday's City Council meeting. Will they attend? Check our new Times' blog, Bay Buzz, to find out.

figures, true colors

Way to go Silverman & Kalt, blow off the biggest municipal recepient and generator of the bed tax $$ you seek from this county.

Add the other story about the VP of Archstone having "little to no contact" from the Rays (because they were up Hines' butt)...

I was originally for this in the beginning, but after watching how these clowns operate in respect to selling this to local government & the citizens, I've changed my mind.

I am voting no.

I too have modified my position.
I WAS willing to concede the POSSIBILITY of a new stadium in a location OTHER than the waterfront WITH financial terms FAR different than currently exists.

BUT

The Rays REPEATED disregard for, and fundamental ignorance of city, county and state priorities has removed ANY continued consideration.

So Where Do We Stand? -

1 - The Rays see the wheels coming off. So they figure "screw it .. We are done here." As they see it, Hines, not getting the bid was the death knell. I say, there is still a spark left for the Hines deal to go through at the council meeting.

2 - The city council put the word out that they [the Rays] don't have the council votes this time around. The residents were overwhelmingly against it. The Sharockman/Troxler bloggers poisoned the well. Even the mythic mighty mouth RRRick K. with his multi persona's couldn't stop the "anti" blog.

3 - The deal is getting done behind the scenes in the broom closet. Promises are being made. Money is switching hands. Helter-skelter in reverse.

If it makes it on the November ballot, it will be defeated. If the proposal doesn't make it to vote, Mikey and his posse go back to New Yoork City and resume their metro-sexual caveman existences.

Is it over yet? Do I need to say, The Waterfront is Off Limits!

-

They should clear their schedule one one days notice for what???

Drink some more Kool-Aid and don't worry about it Mike, you obviously don't understand.

I obviously don't. Please enlighten me..

You guys have the balls to call out the Rays, saying the new stadium is only for the owners ego, when your "outrage" here is nothing more than responding to the bruised ego of the Clearwater City Manager.

If the Tampa City Council had offered an invitation to the Rays, and they accepted, you would all be CONVINCED that a deal is in the works to move the team to Hillsborough. And tell me that isn't a fact...

Just curious.. Would the POWW-heads want the referendum extended to include all of Pinellas County voters?

$$$$$ 100 Million REASONS $$$$

The COUNTY COMMISSSION IS DOWN THE STREET FROM THE CLEARWATER CITY HALL. BOTH CRITICAL COMPONENTS OF THIS FANTASY.RAYS MGMT IS LAZY OR AS THICK AS SOME OF THE POSTERS.

THATS WHY THEY SHOULD CLEAR THEIR SCHEDULE AND SHOULD HAVE PRESENTED TO THEM BOTH BEFORE NOW.

The bed tax IS a countywide consideration hence the REQUIREMENT that the Rays solicit political support if not countywide voter approval.

St Pete waterfront will NEVER be subject to COUNTYWIDE vote.

The Sacred Cowbell predicts someone in the Rays organization will get smart soon and make sure someone is there. They only have 100 million reasons why they should.

Xenu will show up to the meeting. I live just down the street. I will bring Kool-aid. I love Clearwater. All hail Xenu.

Rays Mike has a point.

I wouldn't show up at a meeting I wasn't prepared for on one days notice. ESPECIALLY on something this big.

I'm sure if Tampa summoned Hank and George Steinbrenner on one days notice to sit in on a meeting about Legend's Field, they wouldn't waste their time either.

Ray F

When are you and Rick K getting hitched? You're sounding more and more like each other as the days pass...

The Rays have given their smoke & mirrors show a dozen times, what is there to prepare for? They were asked on Tuesday to attend a Thurs meeting. That is two days, not one.

And you don't think Silverman could at least send his monkey Kalt to show face, considering Clearwater generates a majority of the bed tax money they're wanting? Seriously?

You guys get more out of touch with reality every day.

Wait until word gets around to the TDC and BCC that the Rays SNUBBED an invitation from Clearwater City Council....we'll see how that works out for ya!!

John,

I've said repeatedly... none of this "works out" for me at all. I'm not the Rays. I'm not the city. I'm just a fan. When it's all said and done...

"The world will still rotate, I will still pay taxes, and Linus will be waiting for the Great Pumpkin next Halloween."

As for Me and Rick K getting hitched...

We sent out invitations the other day... but we're still waiting to hear back from your mom to see if she'll allow you to be our FLOWER GIRL...

Ray F, Rick K and Rays Mike risk breaking their own arms if they continue the excessive patting each other on the back.

More fun to watch than the Special Olympics, though.

They hired Ed Armstrong why couldn't they send him ? Surely he knows how to say I'm sorry but on this short notice all I can do is listen to your concerns and get back to you.
P.S. Ray F congrats on the pending nuptials. Do you have to go to San Francisco or is Fl. law ok?

It's just going to be a small family thing. No marriage license or anything; just a few close friends gathered together.

It's going to be mostly me and Rick K and maybe a few other of the "Pro's" patting each other on the backs.

Maybe after this is all hammered out... we can have a "Pros" vs "Antis" Softball Tournament.

(or Sloshball, Thomas)

back to the topic,

I do think they should send somebody there as a goodwill gesture, but as far as being able to field questions (or possible attack), I don't think that should be expected on such short notice.

"Wait until word gets around to the TDC and BCC that the Rays SNUBBED an invitation from Clearwater City Council....we'll see how that works out for ya!!" I'd love to see how the TDC and BCC will have to explain to the voters how they derailed such an enormous deal, not because the numbers don't add up, or it wasn't the best use of the Bed Tax, but because a seperate governemental body, which no imput in the process, felt "snubbed" at one meeting...

The point of this story is not short notice, or busy schedules. Or Cubs games.

The point is the Rays presented this plan 7 months ago and yet, had to be asked by the city of Clearwater to give a presentation. The Rays should have volunteered to do this MONTHS AGO!!!

Same goes for BCC
Same goes for TDC
Same goes for Big C (Beach mayors)
(which, laugh out loud, only 20 people cared to even show up)
Same goes for CNCN (who is STILL waiting)
Same goes for CONA
Same goes for Archstone Nadison
Same goes for DEP
Same goes for the state legislature who shot down their original request for 60 million.

And this is "good business"...how?

We can play that game on the beautiful waterfront park that is the Al Lang parking lot!! :-)

John - You always make a lot of valid arguments, but this one is reaching for straws. They already gave their presentation to the TDC. If THEY had more questions, I am extremely confident that the Rays would make themselves available. The citizens of Clearwater do not a vote in the referendum, and the City of Clearwater is not deciding to use any city funds to pay for the stadium and the Trop site. Yes, it would be a nice PR move to have someone show up, but that is really the only value in doing so..

Question for the panel, because I do not know: Are there any Clearwater City Council memebers that are also on the TDC?

Rays Mike

The city of Clearwater generates a majority of those bed taxes. There are members of the TDC in Clearwater government. There are members of the TDC who are prominent Clearwater businessmen.

This whole perception that suddenly the city of St. Petersburg is an island unto itself is ridiculous. Pinellas county is a very large community and all voices should be heard when it comes to the use of tax money.

Wouldn't it be wise for the Rays to have at least offered their presentation to such a player, regardless whether they have a say? Without having to be asked, in the 8th inning of this process?

Members of the TDC and BCC both have been quoted in past stories on this blog (ask Aaron) that they were perplexed and a little dissapointed that the Rays waited so long to approach them after having made their financing plans public requesting county tax money without first coming to them for discussions.

Both the TDC and BCC have repeatedly stated they, to this date, have more questions than answers about the financing. Have the Rays provided those answers? No. They have not, or there would have been another public meeting. None is scheduled beyond a TDC workshop in July.

Rays Mike

Here's the answer to your question above.

http://www.pinellascounty.org/tdc/pdfs/Board-Listing.pdf

I'm not going to defend the Rays on how they have handled the process, but since a vote has now been scheduled by the TDC and BCC, so if they have additional questions, shouldn't they be the ones who should be scheduling the additional workshops to get the facts needed to have a vote? What type of presentation can the Rays prepare if they do not know what the questions are? I don't think it is the most efficient way to get questions answered by hoping they are asked by a seperate entity that is not directly involved in the process?

The REASON a vote is scheduled without additional hearings and questions being answered is SOLELY because the Rays are NOT WILLING to slow down and allow everyone to make an informed decision. Rather, they're trying to bum-rush this down everyone's throats so they can get it on the ballot in a presidential election cycle, hoping more un-informed voters show up and check "yes"

Leslie Curran who sits on the TDC AND City Council has REPEATEDLY asked the Rays to hold off on the referendum request until EVERYONE gets the tough questions answered. The Rays will lose because they're not willing to do that.

Rays Mike said
"What type of presentation can the Rays prepare if they do not know what the questions are?"

Let me get this straight. Did you go to college? Did you ask the professer for a copy of the final exam in advance, so you could study how best to answer the questions to appease your professor?

The Rays already KNOW the questions. They just don't have any answers.

I am really saddened that the Rays can not drop what they're doing to come learn more about Space Opera and to be delivered to Operating Thetan!

They will now meet with a great demise from The Wall of Fire!!!

If the city and TDC think the idea and vision of a new waterfront stadium and redeveloped Trop is a good one, and if they want the Rays truly want to be business partners, then yes, they would try to help the Rays pass the "test" as much as they could, because appeasing the professor would mean that their questions and concerns were addressed. In the end, this isn’t about egos or pissing battles over who asked who.. It is about $$$. How was the last TDC ended? Did the TDC tell the Rays that they had to ask to come back when they had the answers? What has been the protocol in the past to get the answers to questions previously raised? .

The last TDC ended with mostly unanswered questions by the Rays, and Leslie Curran pleading with Kalt again, to delay the referendum.

Since time is running out, there is no time left for the TDC to get the answers they need, so they're going to make the recommendation on what the Rays did give them, which was nothing other than a meanlingless statement by Kalt "The Rays bring tourists...duhhhh"

So Bob Stewart (BCC chair and TDC member) asked TDC staff to dust off an old study to go off of, since the Rays offered no substantive answers...rather the usual:

"duhhhh, we don't have any figures to support that claim"

"duhhhh...I don't know"

"duhhhh, we're working on that"

"duhhhhh...I don't have an answer for you"

duuuuuuuuh

I've seen people come before the board for simple hotel density change requests that were better prepared than the Rays

What were the SPECIFIC questions that were asked that weren't answered?

I believe one of the questions was:

"Do we have a lot of tracks that feature the CowBell?"

haha. THEEE Bruce Dickenson.

Absurd.

Not a single one of these people who are acting upset by the Rays refusal to attend this insignificant meeting would agree to let the entire question hinge on the opinions of the Clearwater City Commission; therefore, the opinions of the Clearwater City Commission are irrelevant in any case. The only impact Clearwater might have on these matters is if they were to come out in favor of them. The result of that would be that the committed "no" troops would chastise the Rays for spending more time courting the Citizens of Council of Clearwater than the people of St. Pete.

Blowing off this meeting was smart for two reasons. There was almost nothing to be gained by attending. And the "no" kooks are further exposed as helpless hysterical hypocrites.

Rick K (Kook antidote? very classy)

Go back to Ohio, nobody cares about your "opinions" here any longer.

You've proven yourself to be a joke.

Not to be confused with the previous Demetrios, I will now be known as Tarpon Demetrios since I was banished to my "homeland" by get-smart.

All the ANTI's are just idiots. Rick K is the only one smart enough to make them all look like fools with his well written, insightfull posts full of facts and truthfull statements.

The ANTI's will lose because Rick K will convince the voters that these paired redevelopment proposals will make everyone rich beyond their wildest dreams.

The 2:42 poster, obviously, is not the real OBSERVER, but an impostor. Demetrios, or whomever posted at 2:27 PM is a deranged fool. Why do you idiots in the against brigade insist that anyone who doesn't swallow the buckets of hogwash you put out is working for the Rays, or the same person, always working in disguise. In what scenario do you imagine it matters that Rick K or anyone else would gain something by disguising themself?

I think one of the ANTI's is trying to prove that Observer, Colorado Snowbird, Demetrios, and Rick K are all the same person!!! How DARE they play my game better than I do!!!

These paired redevelopment proposals are the best thing to happen to this city, and anyone who disagrees should be forced to leave town!!

The bed tax IS of COUNTYWIDE significance and CLEARWATER is the largest generator of bed tax revenue thus the REQUIREMENT that Rays solicit political support for the bed tax extension COUNTYWIDE.

The St Pete waterfront will NEVER be subject to COUNTYWIDE vote.

These "businessmen" don't comprehend two simple points yet expect their complex "paired" proposals to be embraced WITHOUT ALTERNATIVES,QUESTIONS OR TIME FOR INDEPENDENT ANALYSIS.
The Rays are manipulative, lazy, or as thick as some of the posters here.

Enjoy the game boys!

You know what? I think that anyone who would use another persons name in this forum is an insecure idiot, whether you are an "Anti" or "Pro"! I don't like my name being used in order to drum up controversy.

I completely agree with you Tarpon Demetrios, it's sad that you try and force your opnions down people's throats to the point where you have to change your name to continue attacking people. It's childish and I for one would never do such a thing.

The 3:14 pm post is not from Rick K. It is from an impostor who is so afraid of Rick K's posts that he must resort to deception. A childish fool, in other words. Fortunately for those interested in the truth, I have read Rick K's blog and know where he is right now, and I know he is not posting on this site. So why must you lie, childish one?

The 2:48 pm poster, above, is also a fake. Liars who have nothing better to do than resort to childish antics. What possesses people to resort to deception?

Earth to Snowbird:

It's satirical. Rick posts under fake names a lot, so it's comical to post that.

He's not afraid of Rick - he's using Rick as a joke.

Stop your whining, Colorado Snowbird. If you can't handle the heat, get out of the kitchen.

Oh and the post at 3:18 is Demetrios, posing as Colorado Snowbird.

It's too bad Riok K started attacking people's opinions with multiple fake names just because he lost all respect under his own name. We wouldn't have this problem.

You people are pathetic. If Rick actually lost all credibility, there would be no need to try to undermine his credibility by using his name.

For those who mistakenly came to these blogs seeking truthful information, let me sort it out for you.

There is a very small band of committed people who will do pretty much anything to prevent these proposals from coming to a vote. These people coordinate their efforts to trick people and otherwise co-opt debate. They are aided by willing accomplices at this site.

In response to this organized effort to deprive the citizens of St. Pete a right to have a say in determining their city's future, a handful of proponents who favor these proposals have begun communicating. One of the things we on the "pro" side do is take turns monitoring these blogs. We share our schedules with one another.

That the "anti" movement is so desperate that it must resort to hiding behind the names of people in the "pro" side in order to undermine the credibility of the pro side speaks volumes.

I ask everyone to consider why the ANTI's cannot stick to truth, and abandon their attempts to deceive.

Hey wait a minute, KOOK...I am the only one allowed to defend Rick K against the ANTI'S attempts to inject logic and reason into this debate. If Rick K hadn't started using multiple names to attack people with a valid opinion, I suppose this never would have happened. But since he's the smartest of the bunch, I guess he was justified in doing so.

Don't forget that these paired redevelopement proposals also feed hungry children in developing nations.

Alright, alright, this is getting out of hand... I bet Theee Bruce Dikenson and Xenu both agree: More Cowbell!

(wouldn't want either of them to pilot my plane or spaceship, haha)

The poster at 3:31 pm is an impostor.

I am Colorado Snowbird.

The 3:31 pm is engaged in an immature campaign to deceive others, so great is her fear of Rick K and the reasoned posts of those who oppose the ANTI's.

Sybil, please take your pills.

What the heck? I see a lot of people now feel the need to dress up in a wig and put on lipstick. It was kinda funny the first time Bugs Bunny did it, but it doesn't work for the rest of you!

I wanted to chime in on this point, made by two different ANTI's above.

" The city of Clearwater generates a majority of those bed taxes."

Actually, they don't. PRIVATELY OWNED HOTELS in Clearwater generate the largest portion of bed taxes of the hotels located in any muncipal entity in the county.

So, first of all, the Clearwater City Council pays no bed taxes.

Second, while private Hotels in Clearwater pay a larger share of bed taxes than are paid by hotels in any other community, the Clearwater share is not a majority of the tax.

Someone said, "There are members of the TDC in Clearwater government."

Actually, one of the 12 members of the TDC board is in Clearwater Government.

Someone also said, "There are members of the TDC who are prominent Clearwater businessmen."

There are two Clearwater business people on the TDC. In total, 3 of the 12 members of the TDC are from Clearwater.

And it is not unimportant to note that Clearwater Beach is home to SIX members of the current 25 man roster of the Rays, along with two coaches, two members of the PR/Media department, and three other front office executives of the team.

According to a friend of mine who works at a very prominents Clearwater Beach hotel, 80 guests have been at that one hotel this week in connection with the Rays-v-Cubs series. If they are in 40 rooms for 3 nights at $150 a night, that is $18,000 in revenue, before restaurants, tips, and other income.

Those who are very confident that the TDC will shoot this down are probably influenced more by wishful thinking. Wait until the Rays provide their report of how much the team impacts county hotel stays.

930,000 County residents

250,000 St Pete residents

Millions of future NON RAYS fans tourists...

EXTORTED FOR THE RELATIVLY FEW RAYS FANS AT THE EXPENSE OF OTHER STADIUMS BONDS, BEACHES, AND TOURISM ADVERTISING FOR OUR SINGLE LARGEST ECONOMIC ENGINE.

keep your $18,000 Rick
we'll keep our waterfront
and our economy

1962. Are you serious?

There is no other single investment by the County and City that is visited and followed by more County residents than the Rays.

None.

Not the Grand Prix.
Not Rib Fest.
Not Gay Pride.

Not any of the beaches, not any community festival.

No museum, school, library, or park.

None.

So first of all, the Rays are the #1 single attraction of County Residents in the County.

Secondly, the Rays bring more people to St Pete and Pinellas than any other single event or entity in this county. People come here for Bucs games and the Outback bowl. People come here for the Grand Prix.

Still.

None of the above, by itself, outdraws the Rays.

So, keep quoting those numbers. You may be happy pretending that 930,000 County Residents don't want the Rays in Pinellas, but you would be wrong.

You might be happy pretending that 250,000 St. Pete residents don't want the Rays in St. Pete, but you would be wrong.

You might be comfortable pretending that no Tourists who come here do so because of the Rays, but you would be wrong.

You might pretend that the college bowl game we'll now be hosting at the Trop / New Al Lang stadium won't bring upwards of 30,000 people to town, but you would be wrong.

You might pretend that the All Star game will not bring upwards of $70,000,000 to Pinellas, but you would be wrong.

Just go right on pretending.

Your fantasies convince no one.

You should work for the CVB
GOOBER.

Somebody better tell the Rays because they're not making into the stands or paying.

If you understood the community AND the BED TAX
you would know what they support such as; BEACH RENOURISHMENT,TOURISM ADVERTISING and SPORTS FACILITIES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY...
But THE BEACH IS,
ALWAYS HAS BEEN,
AND ALWAYS WILL BE
THE #1 DRAW HERE YOU IDIOT.

Beaches. Not any one beach.

Beaches outdraw the Rays.

But not a particular beach, all by itself.

And for 1962 to be calling ANYONE an idiot is a pretty big stretch....

Seriously.

You weren't at the end of the line the day they were handing out Smarts, you called in sick that day!

Your posts are contrived by seven year olds...

"920,000 county residents, 250,000 St Pete Residents, Millions of Tourists who will never come here"

HaHaHaHaHa.

Oh, and I forgot.

Posts on five separate blogs:

"Support Plan B."

Which really isn't Plan B at all. It's plan #37 to try to derail a reasonable plan to let the citizens vote!

SUPPORT PLAN B

PINELLAS SUNCOAST BEACHES GOOB.
BEACH RENOURISMENT IS IN DIRECT COMPETITION WITH THE 100 MILLION REQUESTED BY THE RAYS NOT TO MENTION OTHER STADIUMS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY.Should have talked to Clearwater.

SUPPORT PLAN B

NOT NOW

NOT ON THE WATERFRONT

LESS TAXPAYER MONEY

I have a friend that works at the Tradewinds. According to their poll of recent guests 89.439% said they would not return if their bedtax went to MLB. You are so fffunny RRRick.

Nope. Your friend is mistaken.

And here is the thing, if he is right, that is PERFECTLY okay, because the new stadium will replace all those who leave. Those who wont come back to Pinellas can enjoy their stay at the MotorLodge Inn/Wafflehouse/Elks Lodge in Plant City.

The rest of us will enjoy our time split between beautiful downtown St. Pete's waterfront and the awesome Gulf beaches.

I think all posters but me are really Aaron Sharockman.

Debate.

Beach hoteliers know the priority of beach tourism over this proposal and the critical need for beach renourishment to maintain market share.
Caldesi is the #1 rated beach and attracts tourists worldwide.
Federal beach renourishment funding will be reduced and WE must maintain OUR largest economic engine.
Clearwater AND other communities want a voice in this BED TAX extension COUNTYWIDE.

I have a friend who works at the Tradewinds too. And he says 96.275% of the staff think your friend is a first rate nut job.

Tourists don't care how the taxes paid on their hotel room are spent.

1962 has changed names, I guess.

A countywide vote would be awesome. Bring it on.

Or, for the Tourist Tax, let every hotel operator vote. A friend of mine has a 16 room Hotel. They pay just over $3300 a year to the penny tax which currently supports all three baseball stadiums. If, during the course of the year, they get 32 room nights becuase of people who come here for Rays games or the college bowl game or something else in the stadium, they have come out okay.

Last year, they got 174 room nights because of the Rays.

I say let them vote!

Hey RRRick since word of mouth does wonders for a small hotel why don't you mention the name of your friends hotel? Maybe he/she can increase their business. Personally I believe to be another one of your fantasies but I hope you prove me wrong.

The TOTAL tax of hotel stays is SUBSTANTIAL and because of different rates in nearby BEACH COUNTIES we are endagering our economy.

Any of you know what the TOTAL TAX IS?

Yes. Some of us know what the total collected bed tax is.

Some of us also know the range of reasonable estimates for how many dollars in hotel business the Rays generate each year.

How about telling some of us what some of us know there RRRick? And answer my question while you are at it.

NOT THE QUESTION CHUCKLES

TRY AGAIN

Hint: not one penny

TIMES UP Rrrrrrrrick

12% is the correct Response.
5% of that is the bed tax.

Tourist pay 12% TAX on EACH SHORT TERM ROOM EACH NIGHT

In addition to parking fees, resort fees, and tips that sustain OUR ECONOMY.

RRRick since you can't or won't answer my questions can I assume you are lying again?

Xenu knows Rick might be lying.
Xenu knows Rick has several different spirits in him.
Xenu shall give Rick wisdom.
Xenu will bring Rick- more cowbell.
All Hail Xenu!

That 5% tourist tax is the MAX allowed by state law.

Coupled with our higher than normal sales tax at 7% due to the PENNY FOR PINELLAS...

TOURISTS PAY 12% TAX
EACH NIGHT-EACH ROOM!!

WE ARE AT A COMPETITIVE DISADVATAGE IF WE MORTGAGE FUTURE EARNINGS FOR THIS DEAL

THESE TAXES ARE SUBSTANTIALLY GENERATED BY BEACH BOUND TOURISTS NOT RAYS FANS(14,000 LAST NIGHT) AND WE MUST MAINTAIN AND IMPROVE BEACHES OURSELVES WITH IMPENDING FEDERAL CUTBACKS.

TOURISTS WILL PATRONISE NEARBY BEACH COUNTIES WITH LOWER TAX RATES AND BETTER MAINTAINED BEACHES.

WE HAVE THE #1 RATED (CALADESI) BEACH IN THE WORLD, PERHAPS THE RAYS WOULD LIKE THAT WATERFRONT LOCATION!!!

YES RAYS
CLEARWATER AND OTHER COMMUNITIES IN PINELLAS DESERVE TO TALK TO YOU.

THE TEAM BETTER HOPE CITIES ARE STILL WILLING TO LISTEN AFTER THIS DEBACLE.

Xenu believes that propety is available close to Fort Harrison. Xenu will negotiate.
