One of the most serious, passionate public servants we've seen in this city.

There is nothing derogatory against Mr. Gibbons. Amscot provides a wanted service (that is why the have grown so much). If banks want to compete for business in new areas (i.e. the southside) they can. They have had access for many many years in these new areas but for some reason choose not to participate.
If banks want to enter this market they can and should. But we will see. They have been presented this "opportunity" for decades. but they NEVER ever come through.

Karl is a certified nutjob. Look at his record. Get a real job Karl. oh that's right, you can't do anything else.

Nice tie, Adam.

Karl is not gunning for anyone as much he is simply working hard for the best interests of his constituents.
18,300 families in St. Pete currently do not use traditional banking services. The Bank on St. Pete program will help bring these households traditional banking services. 15 percent of our community is losing up to $400 a year on fees that traditional banking does not require.
Bank on St. Pete is just one of many economic programs that Karl Nurse is working on to benefit the people of his district.

Glad to see Karl knows that Gibbons and his cronies are self interested f'tards that do NOT need to be rewarded for mooching off of our city and those who generally less fortunate.

Excellent job, Councilmember Nurse.
Those kinds of predatory services are emblematic of everything that is wrong in the urban community.
Thank you for your work on this and all the other issues that you devote your efforts to.

Nurse is a NUT
Yes - nice tie Adam. You look like a complete idiot.

Karl is an idea machine. He has been turning out a number of accomplishments that address the economic challenges of his district.
Bank on St. Pete is a financial literacy program that helps poorer families build stability. This is exactly the type of policy that local pols should be working on to benefit the public.
Whoever the next Mayor is, they will be fortunate to have such an effective person on council.

Adam makes the statement. Not Karl. Typical media trying to generate a story.
Posted by: shuturyap | June 08, 2009 at 06:05 PM
No dig here.
regardless of what you think of amscot, Gibbons is a successful businessman and knows the city best. He is liked by many and can legitimately incorporate all of st. pete citizens in policy-making.
Posted by: pascal | June 08, 2009 at 09:24 PM
Gibbons is a success? Really? How do you define success? If you have money, you are a success? Does it matter HOW you got the money? By this definition, strong arm robbers are successful. Pimps are successful.
Bernie Madoff is a success.
Michael Vick is a success.
Mel Gibson is a success.
Mike Tyson is a success.
Oh, ok. You are right. Devron Gibbons, predatory lender is a success.
Go Devron!
Posted by: Success, at what price? | June 09, 2009 at 07:59 AM
7:59, you're an fool. Do some research on Amscot policies before you paint it, or any of its employees with the "predator" brush.
Although payday loan and cash advance providers often offer their loans at higher interest then the banks, they are still not comparable. This is because banks will not fund a loan to an individual who has bad credit or has filed for bankruptcy. On the other hand, payday loan lenders do, which is one reason the interest is higher than a banks per se. Moreover, payday loan providers have many expenses and often spend in excess of $15 actually servicing the loans. So in reality, payday loan providers are not engaging in predatory lending, but are rather resolving the shortcomings of the government and banking system by providing short term cash advances to individuals who would otherwise not be able to obtain them.
If I follow your thinking, all employees, including the people who sweep the floors, at Amscot Financial are bad people, because you disagree with the firm's practices.

Adam, Keep promoting this type of candidate( Republican hiding in Democrat clothing). Karl is a joke -and his anti union rants at D.E.C. Board in 2008 will come back to haunt him!!! But then again, he is endorsed by Alex Hack-the joke candidate for Mayor.
Posted by: TRUE BLUE | June 09, 2009 at 09:26 AM
Although I throughly enjoyed Gibson's Lethal Weapon movies and The Man Without a Face-I will not go see any Mel Gibson movie ever again. The guy drives drunk, is racist and his rants prove it. And now the Catholic zealot has cheated on his wife of 28 years to have a child out of wedlock.
Michael Vick-excellent quarterback. Had enormous promise. Could have been a real positive force in his community and the nation for that matter. But, alas...he'd rather pit dogs against one another, hang them, shoot them, abuse them and otherwise act in a manner so morally bankrupt and disgusting no community service could make up for it. Not a fan. Won't buy his products nor will I watch any team he ever plays for. Of course, I'm just one person.
And Bernie Madoff-more money than God. Sometimes it's even hard to feel sorry for the rich and famous he duped, but all in all-Madoff destroyed lives. More than any strong arm robber, more than anyone who robbs a clerk at gunpoint Madoff has stolen from all of us who participate in the economy. What can I do to boycott Bernie? Nothing. Just like I couldn't protect myself from his business dealings.
As for Amscot loaning money to those who couldn't otherwise borrow. Well, perhaps they shouldn't be borrowing. And, certainly they shouldn't be borrowing at 350% interest! Not only will I not do business with Amscot, but I will advise anyone I know not to do business with them either. Pimps prey on hookers. Oops, no wait. According to your logic, pimps protect hookers. Doesn't matter that they take 50% of their money for the "work" they do. If a pimp keeps a girl from getting punched, it's okay to punch her himself to scare her into staying, right? Or hire someone (with her own money) to go punch her so she sees the "value" in keeping a pimp. Wow. What logic.
Amscot preys on people who can't afford or are not provided the opportunity to put themselves in a position to afford to borrow in the (used to be) regulated banking industry.
According to your Amscot logic, the deregulated banking industry works-yet, we've all watched it fail.
Consumer demand does not make a market reputable. In Asia, there is a high demand for the underage sex trade. 10-14 year olds are bought and sold daily by the thousands. So, I assume you would say the pimps are just providing a market demanded service and therefore are doing nothing wrong.
I personally wouldn't ever work for amscot. No more than I would go to work for a pimp.
I'm just one person though.
One person who won't watch Mel Gibson movies, or Michael Vick play ball or feel sorry for Bernie Madoff. Nor will I vote for Devron Gibbons.
I vote with my pocketbook, my feet and my ballot.
I hope more citizens follow suit.

And, Robert, Yes. I do consider any Amscot employee to be selling themselves short. Without employees, even the ones who push brooms-Amscot could not exist.
MLK, Jr. borrowed a line from Edmond Burke. So often, that some people attribute the quote to him instead of the rightful owner:
"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."
If Devron Gibbons was a "good man" he would have sought employment with a company or non-profit entity where his talents would be put to GOOD use. Instead, he saw the money offered and chose to turn his head to what the company does to people who look just like him who live in his community. Even worse. WORSE yet- his "work" slaps the face of every elder in his community that went before him to forge a path for him to follow. I don't understand. I suppose you have to try to raise up any success in a blighted community. However, those hard-working community elders are quite short sighted if they vote for Devron Gibbons just because he looks like them. They should stop and think how they wanted to raise their children and what they wanted their children to become.
I would think they wanted and worked to get the next generation an education to use it for good. To become fathers present in their children's lives, to be upstanding members of the community who live and work for the benefit of one another. I'm sure they wanted success for the next generation...and the next and the next. but, it won't happen in a broken cycle. ONe generation can not prey on the next and expect success to perpetuate.
Good men do good things.

Under the bailout, the government is buying ownership shares in failed Wall Street banks with the expectation of eventually reselling them to private interests. So far, the money has disappeared or gone to acquisitions, management bonuses, office remodeling, and fancy vacations with no noticeable effect on the freeing up of credit.
A better plan, as many economists are recommending, is to force bankrupt banks into government receivership. As part of the sale and distribution of assets to meet creditor claims, these banks should be broken up and their local branches sold to local investors. These new, individual community banks and mutual savings and loan associations should be chartered to serve Main Street needs, lending to local manufacturers, merchants, farmers, and homeowners within a strong regulatory framework.

Karl's agenda is Karl's agenda! If it happens that the residents of St. Petersburg benefit from Karl’s actions, it is an incidental by-product.
Karl’s behavior is out of sync with those who put their constituents first and their personal agendas second. Such behavior stems from Karl’s arrogance; he has forgotten that he was appointed NOT elected.
Take the comment about his anti-union stance… I just called a friend who was on the PCDEC Board last year and was told that Karl was the main promoter of using a non-union printer for material which the Party was seeking bids. Given the fact that the unions have supported our Democratic candidates and the Party, Karl was over-ruled.
However, it should be no surprise that Karl is anti-union; he is the owner of a non-union print shop. Although I am not a member of a union, I know that my salary and hours have been positively affected by unions. Shame on you, Karl!!!!

How has any of Karl's work while a Councilman helped him personally?
Union printing is a luxury for groups working with limited funding.
How many union print shops are located in Pinellas County?
Posted by: I was there too | June 09, 2009 at 12:20 PM
Union shops are not luxuries for a party that promotes equality.
Equality is equality no matter the price.
Everybody knows Gunn printing in Tampa is the place to go. The owner of the shop personally handles all political candidates and yes, he discounts prices and does everything he can to stretch a candidate's value. And there is no print shop around that compares to the quality you get.
It is about quality folks.
Quality principles.
Quality work.
Quality candidates.
If you are a Democrat and you believe in the party principles you do not sell out to the lowest bidder.

Karl is the best officeholder in the county, bar-none. If you can't see that, you being willingly obtuse.
Quit being morons and work to elect good candidates.

To Union shops produce quality products, thank you. Gunn Printers is where the PCDEC got their printing done once Karl's ideas were shot down.
To I was there too: Karl I understood that you were the only one who knew that there are no union printers in Pinellas and that Toni found Gunn printers after your non-union promotion failed.

To LEO's specifically our friends behind the wheel taking an ever increasing call volume and St. Petersburg residents.
on 6/10/09 RhinoPac had a meet and greet the candidates. Approx. 200 residents from all over our city attended.
The attendees were NOT the usual suspects. They were residents who have an ever increasing concern about the state in which the city finds itself. At no time during the event did I ever hear that the street level officers were to blame for the current situation. Quite the opposite, we recognize that management has handcuffed you so that you cannot handcuff the criminals. The ever increasing frequency of ever increasing violent acts was a primary topic I overheard.
There was also talk among attendees about solutions, below are the top 5
1. Barricade yourself in your home ( everyone realizes that this will have to be done around 7-3-09 )
2. Contact the NRA and get a discount on a gun and fast track your CWP ( about a third are doing this )
3. Order a moving truck, pack what was not stolen in the last burglary of three and head in any direction across a state line. ( 5 are doing just that )
4. When a comm center employee asks if you saw who fired the 5 shots in your alley, loudly remind the comm center employee you are on the FLOOR away from the windows as 9MM bullets can and will break glass, shatter bone, the blow one very big hole in your head if it gets in the way. ( two have had to do this )
5. Vote early and then go on a 18 month around the world cruise and forget about your home as it as been turned into a crack house after the third burglary. ( no one is planning on doing this, YET )
To the Citizen I say, plug in, engage, stand your ground and FIGHT BACK, this is our city not the criminals and not Harmon's or Baker's, IT IS OURS. It is going to be a very long haul, draw the line here. Do what ever is necessary to protect yourself and your loved ones and property THEN GET OUT AND VOTE. ( just set the alarm as you leave or call a house sitter )
It is heart warming that citizens KNOW as I do that those responding to our requests for assistance of at a constant flat out RUN and it is appreciated.
Always watching, Forever listining, always in action and VOTING as I always have.
