Ride for a free burrito

On Saturday July 19, the Seminole Heights Bicycle Club will hold a special 16-mile ride to the Chipotle on Howard Avenue in South Tampa where riders will be treated to FREE BURRITOS!

It's all part of Chipotle's Le Burrito promotion during the Tour de France. As a main sponsor of the Garmin-Chipotle team, they've rolled out a special burrito keep hungry cyclists everywhere filled with calories and carbs. (Though I'll admit, I can't quite figure out if this burrito is any different from their normal offerings.)

The ride will leave at 10 a.m. from the Garden Center on Central Avenue on July 19. Please note the time. The ride will also be slightly faster than the club's usual 10-mile rides.

Hey, did I mention the FREE BURRITOS?!

And free burritos in St. Petersburg, too!

Where: Chipotle Mexican Grill (708 4th Street North, St. Petersburg, FL)
When: Thursday, July 17th, 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

To receive your free Le Burrito, bring your SPBC (St. Petersburg Bicycle Club, Inc.) membership card.

If you're not an SPBC member, just show up riding a bicycle and wearing a bicycle helmet. So, you can get a free Le Burrito even if you aren't an SPBC member.

About a week ago, I stopped in at a new pizza restaurant in the NE Shopping Center. It's called Tour de Pizza.

They had a huge TV tuned to the Tour de France. You can enjoy pizza while watching the Tour. The owner is friendly, is a really nice person, and has good customer service.

The owner dedicated the restaurant to one of his triathlete friends. The Mad Dogs discovered the place and have put a bunch of bicycling memorabilia there.

Open daily, 11 am to 10 pm.

And in other advertising by businesses about bicycling.....

Ten years ago, businesses didn't advertise sales on bicycles. Thieves didn't steal bikes.

In 2001 or 2002, big box stores started advertising department-store quality bicycles.

About 2004, thieves started stealing bicycles.

Yesterday, my mailbox contained an ad and coupon to by a Trek bicycle from a bicycle shop. And one man told me he's had seven bicycles stolen in about 1 1/2 years.

This is big. It means businesses are profiting from selling bicycles. The stealing means individuals really do value bicycles.

Seven bikes stolen in 1 1/2 years?

Dude, buy a lock!

huh?

+1 for Mel's "huh?"

Kimberly, as much as I appreciate your strong advocacy stance in other postings, I've got to say that you're WAY off the mark here...where on earth did you come up with the idea that thieves weren't stealing bikes until 2004? You ought to take a drink of water out of Mel's bottle -- you've been in the sun too long!

You should check out some of Kryptonite's history here:
http://www.kryptonitelock.com/OurStory/Legendary.aspx

Bike theft has been a huge problem in urban areas for DECADES. And thieves don't just steal expensive rigs -- junkstore "beaters" are tremendously popular with thieves. Bikes are valued by thieves solely for their quick resale ability.

Some people steal just because they can. Anyone caught on my property with their hands on anything that belongs to me will be shot on site. Besides, it'll give me an excuse to try out my new Smith and Wesson M&P45!

Mel, do you pack that pistol when you ride?

"And one man told me he's had seven bicycles stolen in about 1 1/2 years."

I'd like to think that if I kept losing a bike about every ten weeks, I'd get a bit more serious about my security measures.

Hence my comment about buying a lock.

I agree that thieves have been stealing bicycles in urban areas for decades.

But there really wasn't much of it going on in St. Petersburg ten years ago. I'd see hardcore bicyclists in packs or riding to/from the meeting place to ride with a pack. But, rarely did I see a person using a bicycle for getting to work or the store. Too many people thought it was instant death.

In 2001, that started changing as people began being educated and finding out it wasn't instant death. As more and more people started bicycling to save gas and for other reasons, thieves started having a market in St. Petersburg.

no, legally speaking, carrying a gun while riding a bicycle is not considered "concealed" so I can't carry it while I ride. Besides, it's probably better that it is illegal to carry a gun in your jersey pocket what with all the jerks driving cars that piss cyclists off. *heehee* Of course, it IS considered "concealed" if it's sitting on the front seat of a car. Go figure!

Sadly today, a bicyclist was seriously injured in a St. Petersburg crash.

A truck and an SUV colided. The SUV went airborne and landed on a bicyclist. Seven years ago, people would have been screaming that bicyclng was dangerous and saying all kinds of nasty things about bicyclists.

People aren't doing that now. They are extending their condolences and prayers and understanding the bicyclist happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, although some people are getting uh..maybe too casual about it seeing as the bicyclist is someone's loved one. But, people understand that life happens.

Concerning the bicyclist who was injured, his name is Kenneth Riggins and is 45-yrs-old.

I called up Bayfront Medical Center.

They said we can mail get-well cards to him at:
Kenneth Riggins
c/o Bayfront Medical Center
Sixth Street South
St. Petersburg, FL 33701

He can receive only cards at this time. He can't have flowers yet.

Is this going on at the Clearwater location?
