Oops! Man accidentally turns himself in

TAMPA -- A Tampa judge today heard the case of a man who phoned authorities to report a crime but inadvertently turned himself in for one instead.

Last month, Michael David Lauterbach called law enforcement to report that his home had been burglarized.

Lauterbach, 20, said it must have happened between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., because that's when he was away at a friend's house playing video games.

One problem. Lauterbach was on probation, which means he was required to be at his own home during the very hours he wasn't. His call alerted authorities to that fact and landed him back in jail on Dec. 31. He was charged with violating the terms of the sentence he was serving for theft and burglary charges of his own.

Hillsborough Circuit Judge Daniel Perry considered Lauterbach's case. The judge put him back on probation.
