A Boca Raton couple spent $155,000 on a clone of their deceased family Labrador retriever, and Sir Lancelot Encore, as he's called, has become an international sensation since arriving Monday night, the Miami Herald reports.
The
10-week-old golden retriever was created in South
Korea by a California biotech firm from the DNA of the first Sir
Lancelot, the beloved pet of Ed and Nina Otto. The company, which auctioned off five dog-cloning procedures in July, says it is the first
single-birth, commercially cloned puppy in the U.S.
By
Tuesday morning, Regis and Kelly and the BBC were clamoring for some dog time with Sir Lancelot Encore.
Why spend so much on a dog clone? Because the original was so special, the Ottos said. 66.'
"He
was a human dog,'' said Ed Otto, 79. "He read your emotions. He knew when to
be with you and when to leave you alone..."He could understand English and read hand signals.''
Otto, who calls himself a ''serial entrepreneur,'' is the son of the late
Edward Otto, who cofounded both NASCAR and the Orange Bowl where, in the
1930s, he staged motorcycle races.
Money wasn't an issue when
they heard about the auction. Indeed, the Ottos cryogenically
banked DNA samples from their beloved Lancelot five years earlier,
hoping that some day they would be able to do what they finally did.
