Dixie County Sheriff's deputies arrested a pair of brothers on Saturday after a neighbor who saw them sitting on the porch walked inside the house and found their elderly mother lying on the floor amidst maggots, beer cans and trash. The neighbor called 911; an ambulance crew arrived at the house to find the partially clothed woman -- thought to be in her 70s -- covered with bruises and sores on the floor, and promptly called police.
In their report, deputies indicated that the Old Town home, in deplorable condition, had a strong odor of human waste, was infested with maggots, and was littered with beer cans and trash. They arrested Jerry P. Holland, 49, and Donald K. Holland, 48, and charged them with aggravated abuse and neglect of the elderly. According to Gainesville.com, Jerry Holland told deputies his mother had been lying on the floor for five days.
