Orlando Hispanics told: you're either black or white

Hispanics who want to join an Orange County schools biracial committee would have to decide if they are black or white, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

Hispanic activists called that ridiculous and an insult to their multiracial culture. "What color do I get to pick because I'm more like copper-toned?" asked Emilio Pérez, president of the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida. "And how would we include an Asian person in this debate?"

Hispanics are the largest minority in the school district and want a say on the panel, which was created by a 1964 court order that said its members had to be either black or white.The school district says it wants to include Hispanics, but he committee would have to vote on that and a federal judge would have to approve.

Can we get an election right?

Oops. Orange County recently sent out letters to confirm voters' registration information.

Instead, according to OrlandoSentinel.com, the letters said the recipients were ineligible to vote in the Nov. 4 election.

An official at the Elections Supervisor's Office said "a glitch" added the incorrect sentence.

Paratrooper lands on roof

A Qatari soldier in parachute training in DeLand missed his target Thursday, landing on the roof of a business near the municipal airport, according to OrlandoSentinel.com.

Salem Mohamed, 30, suffered abrasions to his head and was taken to a hospital with a leg injury, DeLand police said.

The general manager of Skydive DeLand, which is training the group, said he won't know what went wrong until he has a chance to talk to Mohamed. The Qatari army group, which has been in DeLand about two weeks, will be training for two more months.

Maybe they'd prefer rubble

  Last year, Joe Woodard's wife and infant son were killed when an airplane crashed into their Sanford home. Now, he is almost done rebuilding it.

But, according to OrlandoSentinel.com, the almost-complete house has run into a snag: the Preserve at Lake Monroe Homeowners Association. It has threatened to sue, demanding that the house be returned to its previous condition.

  It has complained about shingles not conforming to the community, the house's elevation and its size (it's 5 feet longer).

Reality television show contestants say they were held against their will

APOPKA -- Eight young women moved into an Apopka house about two months ago with dreams of making it big on a realty show called Pauper to Princess, the Orlando Sentinel reports. The show's producers promised to help them grow mentally and physically, taking them to cultural events and providing etiquette lessons. Now, four of the contestants claim they were held against their will by the show's director. According to a police report, the women forced their way out of the house on Saturday, with help from a male friend of of the women. Police arrested the director, Marc Brilleman, 33, on a charge of false imprisonment.  One participant, Alisha Waizmann, 23, refused to give details on what happened until she consults a lawyer. "All I can say is that we were not involved in any sort of sex scandal," Waizmann told the newspaper. "There are a lot of issues involved in it and a lot of schemes and scandalous stuff."
