Hispanics who want to join an Orange County schools biracial committee would have to decide if they are black or white, the Orlando Sentinel reports.
Hispanic activists called that ridiculous and an insult to their multiracial culture. "What color do I get to pick because I'm more like copper-toned?" asked Emilio Pérez, president of the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida. "And how would we include an Asian person in this debate?"
Hispanics are the largest minority in the school district and want a say on the panel, which was created by a 1964 court order that said its members had to be either black or white. The school district says it wants to include Hispanics, but he committee would have to vote on that and a federal judge would have to approve.
