What to watch this weekend: ‘Lady Dynamite,’ new Jeffrey Dahmer docuseries

YOU'RE THE SAVIOR: FUTURE MAN

In one of the wildest-sounding new series coming this month, Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games) plays a janitor by day and a world-ranked gamer by night in Future Man. He ends up being visited by mysterious time travelers after he becomes the first person to beat a certain video game. The futuristic soldiers recruit him for a special mission: stop a doctor from finding the cure for herpes, which would apparently cause global human destruction. Important note: This sci-fi comedy series is from the same guys who helped create Sausage Party and Superbad (Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg). Sounds like a raunchy mix of '80s nostalgia, Back to the Future and The Last Starfighter. Also stars Eliza Coupe and Derek Wilson. Midnight Tuesday, Hulu.

DAHMER ON DAHMER: A SERIAL KILLER SPEAKS

You know what 2017 desperately needs? A new docuseries about Jeffrey Dahmer, arguably the most notorious serial killer in American history. Twenty-five years ago, Dahmer was tried and convicted of 17 gruesome murders. But how did a man come to luring young men into his home, drugging them, sexually assaulting them, killing them and eventually consuming them? After his conviction, Dahmer gave extensive interviews to investigators and reporters, including famed journalist Nancy Glass. The new two-part Oxygen series Dahmer on Dahmer: A Serial Killer Speaks draws on previously recorded footage along with new interviews with Dahmer's father and stepmother as well as Billy Capshaw and Preston Davis, the two men reportedly sexually assaulted by Dahmer while he was in the U.S. Army from 1979 to 1981. While this special might not provide any groundbreaking revelations, it's gearing up to be a must-watch for true crime junkies. 7 p.m. Saturday, Oxygen.

EDGY COMEDY: LADY DYNAMITE

The meta-sitcom Lady Dynamite from comedian Maria Bamford is based on what she has accepted to be "her life." The first season was a mix of surreal episodes and blunt observations about her personal life and shaky mental health, turning the series into a poignant extension of her stand-up. The second season aims to go deeper into her kooky autobiography, as TV Maria tries to keep a new fling alive while following her comedy career at a Netflix-like streaming service. The new season also promises more cameos from Bamford's comedy pals. Now available on Netflix.

Gritty period drama: Taboo Season 1

FX's grimy period drama Taboo premiered in January, but we're still gushing over Tom Hardy's portrayal of a mysterious 19th century adventurer in a top hat. He plays James Delaney, a man thought to be dead who returns to London after 10 years in Africa. He arrives covered in tribal tattoos under his trench coat and a dozen stolen diamonds in his pockets, returning to take over the family shipping business and avenge his father's death. The series is definitely an eye-catching period drama, but instead of snarky romance and fancy dresses there are dirty frocks, political conspiracies and possibly supernatural murder.  Season 1's eight episodes are now available on Hulu.
