Stumptown Kid by Carol Gorman & Ron J. Findley (Grades 3-5)
Charlie Nebras misses his father, who died in the Korean War; dislikes his mother's domineering, prejudiced boyfriend, Vern; and loves baseball but is cut from the premier Wildcats team. Into his life walks Luther Peale, a former Negro Leagues baseball player. The rest, as they say, is history. Baseball, and the world, has changed a lot since the days of segregation. Did you know the Tampa Bay Rays have the most African-American players of all the teams in the major league? Stumptown Kid is a very enjoyable book I so love the part when Charlie got busted because he tried to sneak his Dad's weapon for Luther.

The stumptown kid was a great book that enjoyed me very much. My favorite part was the ending because it was like a race of time for them and they were all sad for Luther leaving. Overally, it is one of my favorite books I have ever read.

this book rocks! i love how Vern gets kicked out by Mary! it was cool for mary to kick him out for charlie to celebrate hid birthday. i'm stuck on why vern would take ruckus brody out of jail. doesn't mary know vern is mean. for charlie and luther to go down the sewer was awesome. they could actully tell their way out of the sewer. luther is SO experienced! the stumptown stormers were going against the wildcats luther trained them well. what was his trick? what's not to like in this book? teh authors should so make a book number 2 to see what happens!
