Middle school teacher arrested on fourth DUI
BRANDON -- In his 20 years teaching science for Hillsborough County schools, officials say Roger Kenneth Roberts Jr., left, has gotten rave reviews.
But the Tomlin Middle School teacher's instructional career may be in jeopardy now.
Roberts, 44, was arrested early this morning on a felony charge of driving under the influence. His arrest report states it was his fourth DUI charge. His past arrests were in 1993, 1996 and 1997, a sheriff's spokeswoman said.
Hillsborough schools spokeswoman Linda Cobbe said Roberts has been a highly regarded teacher -- a favorite with principals and students -- despite past disciplinary issues stemming from earlier misdemeanor arrests.
Cobbe said DUI is not necessarily a firing offense, but now that Roberts' actions have risen to a felony level, his future with the district is uncertain. He has been placed on paid leave, Cobbe said, pending administrative review of his case.
Roberts could not immediately be reached for comment.
