Suspect at large in New Port Richey shooting

NEW PORT RICHEY -- Authorities were searching for a suspect in a shooting Friday evening in an apartment at the south end of the city.

According to New Port Richey Police, a man knocked on the door at 5950 St. James Road about 7 p.m. and asked for someone inside by name. The woman who answered let the suspect in.

"It appears they knew each other," said New Port Richey Capt. Darryl Garman.

Once inside, the suspect fired a gun, striking the victim in the head. Garman did not release any information about the victim, who was taken to Bayfront Hospital in St. Petersburg.

The suspect took off on foot. A police dog picked up a trail and tracked it for a couple blocks. But the trail went cold, an indication the man got into a vehicle, Garman said.

He did not release any information about the suspect.
