LARGO -- A man trying to cross Missouri Avenue on a motorized electric scooter died Wednesday after being hit by a pickup truck, police said.

Jack Schaffer, 84, 1807 Lady Mary Drive in Clearwater, was trying to cross Missouri south of Rosery Road when he was struck about 2:20 p.m.

Schaffer was crossing Missouri from east to west. He reached the inside lane and was trying to get onto the median when he was hit by a northbound 1997 GMC Sierra pickup truck driven by 59-year-old Angus T. Davis III of Clearwater, police said. The scooter was not in a crosswalk when it was struck, police said.

An investigation, including toxicology testing, is under way.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call Largo police Sgt. George Edmiston at (727) 586-7473.
