Woman charged in assault with samurai sword

A samurai sword-wielding woman was arrested early this morning in Brandon after attacking her sister, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. Deputies arrested Annette Clarissa Smith, 42, at 12:42 a.m. at 601 Brentwood Place in Brandon.

According to the arrest affidavit, the incident arose from an argument between Smith and her sister, who is not named in the report. A few minutes after midnight, Smith picked up a samurai sword and began waving it in a threatening way.

The sister suffered a superficial cut on her abdomen and more serious lacerations to her left hand, including a severed tendon on her middle finger, when she tried to wrest the sword away from Smith.

Deputies charged Smith with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and took her to the Orient Road Jail, where she remained Tuesday afternoon.
