Tom O'Neill named New Port Richey city manager

NEW PORT RICHEY -- The City Council on Tuesday night named its longtime public works director as the new city manager.

Acting City Manager Tom O'Neill was offered a permanent position as the city's top administrator. O'Neill started with the city in an entry-level position more than 30 years ago and had worked his way up to public works director.

He was named interim city manager late last year after then-City Manager Scott Miller left for a job in Kansas. But City Council members Tuesday said O'Neill was a good fit in his new role, praising his demeanor and his institutional knowledge.

"He's so patient and kind, and that goes a long way with me," said councilwoman Marilynn deChant.

O'Neill and the City Council will now begin contract negotiations.
