Brandon man jailed after overnight police chase
TAMPA -- A Brandon man was arrested early this morning after authorities say he rammed a police cruiser and tried to run over a deputy during a police chase.
Authorities said the fracas began when someone called 911from University Oakwood Apartments around 11:30 p.m. A resident there spotted an armed man chasing someone through the parking lot of the complex. That person left in a 2004 Gold Ford Explorer.
An officer saw the SUV parked at the Interstate Lounge, located less than 2 miles away from the complex in the 9400 block of Nebraska Avenue, and saw Darry West get into a gold Ford Explorer, according to a police report.
Police tried to stop the SUV from leaving, but West, 23, of 4303 Manner Cove Circle, drove away until he reached Busch Boulevard and turned north, winding through back streets until he reached a strip mall parking lot at 1913 Bearss Ave.
There, police said, West aimed the SUV at an officer's cruiser and rammed the passenger side. Police said West also tried to strike a Hillsborough County sheriff's deputy who was deploying tire-deflating
stop sticks.
West drove away from the parking lot, but lost control of the SUV when he jumped a curb turning west onto Bearss Avenue, police said. The SUV flipped over and landed on its roof in a small pond.
West walked away uninjured and was taken into custody. Authorities recovered a loaded .40 caliber Smith & Wesson pistol from the SUV.
He was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, aggravated fleeing to elude, reckless driving, being a felon in possession of a firearm, 13 counts of being a felon in possession of ammunition and driving with a suspended license.
