Cause of apartment fire unknown

ST. PETERSBURG -- More than a dozen residents were temporarily evacuated from The Sable Point Apartments, 5572 22nd St. S, after a fire Sunday evening.

St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue units responded to a fire in apartment #1906 just after 7 p.m. The unit, vacant when firefighters arrived, was filled with heavy fire and smoke, said deputy fire marshal Lt. Joel S. Granata.

The fire, which spread through a window to an apartment and attic space above, was extinguished in less than 25 minutes. Residents were evacuated as a precaution and will be able to return to their apartments, Granata said.

The cause of the fire is unknown and is being investigated by the fire department’s Fire Prevention Division.
