Officer injured in scuffle with suspect
TAMPA -- A police officer was injured while trying to arrest a domestic violence suspect early Saturday morning at a Tampa apartment.
Anthony A. Powell, 28, pushed officer Tony Trigo to the ground, and Trigo's head hit the concrete, according to Tampa Police. Officers Steve Magnan and Ryan Jacques noticed that Trigo was lying unconscious. He was not breathing and they couldn't detect a pulse.
Both officers started giving him CPR. They resuscitated Trigo, who was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital.
After knocking Trigo to the ground, Powell barricaded himself in the apartment with Lahkoyah Powell, 27, and two children, said police department spokeswoman Andrea Davis.
Officers forced their way in and arrested Anthony Powell. He was charged with battery of a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence, burglary, kidnapping, domestic battery and possession of cocaine. He was taken to the Orient Road Jail.
Trigo later regained consciousness and is in stable condition at St. Joseph's Hospital, Davis said. Trigo is a 24-year police veteran who works the midnight shift.
Officer Magnan sustained abrasions to his arms and legs along with several loose teeth. He was treated at Tampa General Hospital and is in good condition.
