Car veers off Courtney Campbell; driver rescued

CLEARWATER -- A car hydroplaned and drove off the Courtney Campbell Parkway into Old Tampa Bay at about 6 p.m.

The driver, Margaret DeMarco, 56, was ejected into the water and later taken to Tampa General Hospital with serious injuries. She is in critical but stable condition, the hospital said.

The car was traveling east when the driver lost control and the car went through the guardrail, witnesses told police. Other drivers stopped and pulled her from the water.

It was a single-vehicle crash and no one else was injured, police said.
